consumerist.com — 1: Many HP Printers, like their laser printers, have a built-in page-count after which they won't work. This resides in the a transpart sometimes called image or drum kit. Rather than get the printer fixed, it's often cheaper to buy a new printer, OR you can do a NV ram reset.

1 1/2 years? You call that longevity? Tell me if it's still working in 15 years and then I'll believe you.

It's really too bad that printer companies have become so scummy. I know that Lexmark sued a company that made third-party cartridges for violating the copyright law on their bulls**t anti-refill chips. Not sure but I think Epson has done the same. I know that Epson did have a settlement a while back regarding ink cartridges that ran out of ink too early. As far as I know most printers made these days don't allow you to easily refill ink cartridges because of the chips on them. I have a Canon i560 and I'm glad that I can easily buy cheapo knockoff ink cartridges for $1.50 for it.

There's a concept called "devaluation" that says the older something is, the less it's worth. So the $3000 is really only worth $175 five years later.

@falcynbecause the "HP Parts Store" is not a single entity or department that can be "moved". So I suspect that only the phone service reps were changed (likely outsourced to a different call centre), and because all parts orders are entered electronically and filled by various parts depots or wharehouses in North America the people you would talk to at the "HP Parts Store" have absolutely nothing to do with any parts ordered. The only reason we ever needed to call the "HP Parts Store" was to check on or cancel an existing order.

@nofxjunkie:I've read that HP stopped including printer cables because the retail stores forced them not to include them so they could make a killing off overpriced cables.

I noticed a drop off in quality before she told the helm.I wish my old 5P was a USB. I couldn't ever get the bugs worked out with a USB to parallel cable.I love my Brother 5150 color laser. It is about the size of a Yugo or VW Beetle, but it prints nice.
