Why spend anytime at all trying to make an inferior desktop OS operate the way the two market leading desktops (MS,Apple) operate? I seriously don't understand what any Linux distro on the desktop has to offer the consumer over XP, OSX, or Vista?I'm typing this from an OpenSUSE 10.2 box, and I can tell you it took me much more time getting this rig to a functional level than the same rig with XP SP2 installed on it. After all is said and done, what did I gain? I still don't have a decent financial manager as Quicken2006 which I own, doesn't work via wine at all, and GnuCash 2.0 is horrid, buggy, and doesn't have US online banking support. That's a show stopper right there.Battlefield 2 and a host of other games doesn't work via wine or cedega, so that sucks.I spend more time configuring MS components (win32codecs, mstruetype fonts, etc.) than I should have to, just to get decent look and feel and entertainment value. Beryl and compiz while both look good, are horribly unstable and sometimes impossible to get working depending on your video card. I have to break the law "libdvdcss" to play dvd's. I can't use itunes with my ipod as there is no music store equivalent and my already drm'd purchased music won't play.I cannot collaborate to/from work with documents etc. at OO screws up the formatting on most of my macro laden excel and word files, and forget about a powerpoint, project, or visio equivalent.Trying to pull a video off my minidvd cam, author it, include music, subtitle, etc. is almost an impossible frustrating task, when I can go over to my wife's computer running XP SP2 with adobe premiere elements and knock out a full dvd in about an hour.I understand the concept behind the OSS "movement" and I have been using various Linux distros for over 10 years now, and the only thing I see anymore is all the distros trying to mimick MS and Apple at the desktop OS level, and nothing more and they are all failing at the process. It will be interesting to see how far it comes 5 more years down the line, as 2007 is not the year of Linux....again.... Frankly, I'm sick of wasting my time with it. I'll use the Linux based servers we have at work, and that's about it. MS and Apple already have invented the wheel and it rolls very well.

Also about repositories , well what i have added was from reputed sources first 3 were of ntfs-3g now of which one was not working i have removed the link now for remaining links well you can go to official website of ntfs-3g(<a class="user" href="http://www.ntfs-3g.org)">http://www.ntfs-3g.org)</a> There if you click on Ubuntu it takes you to a page of Ubuntu Forums describing method for installing ntfs-3g(<a class="user" href="http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=217009)">http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=217009)</a> since the forum topic has been well received and has been referred by the offical ntfs-3g site so i linked it.Also about the last repositories link it is of offical ubuntu Netherlands site so should not be a problem.About automatix2 and easybuntu well they can simplify the job mentioned here but i decided to follow a different approach and i have mentioned here , you are welcome to try them out and maybe i would review them also later.

@superpotentialIsn't that what I said? *confused*As for nvidia, the current nvidia drivers are in the Ubuntu repos these days. Fiesty (which I run) even has the 9*** series drivers needed for Compiz/Beryl without XGL.

I've seen this once on a machine. Try booting with noapic. You have to press some f?? key for manual / advanced / custom .. to change boot options. There you just add noapic to the line.It will boot then. Once installed you need to repeat the trick in grub (the menu at the beginnen) .. .. when its booted for the 2nd time (because you installed it) .. you can do a sudo /boot/grub/menu.lst and add it to your kernel line as well .. so you don't have to type it anymore.I'm not sure what it turns off, we've found that its due to a some bug in the bios. When updating the bios, the problem went away. But running linux with noapic had no noticeable problems. So if it works, you might just want to stick with the workaround.Remember NOAPIC.

I DO have a gripe with initial UBUNTU installation though.I decided to try Linux again, this time because I did not want to upgrade to Vista and XP was getting kinda old (it is about 8 yrs old) and my XP installation was getting very sluggish (not because of OS, but I installed whole bunch of crap on it)I have used Linux off and on since 1992 (Slakware, kernel version 0.8 something) and I do like X windows. Since then, off and on, I tried - Suse, Slakware(SP?), Mandriva, Fedora, Ubuntu (my current installation- 6.10 Edgy).Previous times, I did not have any issues installing, but soon had to go back to Windowz (Dual booting is pain and I can do most things with Windows anyways) because of Work issues. Now, I have decided to use the Ubuntu and first issue that I hit is that the included X server is NOT compatible with my Nvidia 7800GT. I HAD to install the whole system in non GUI (because X kept crashing) re-configure the X to use VESA mode, start the X server, then go to NVidia website and download the driver then install/configure X to start with. Here is my gripe, WHY did Ubuntu developers decided to kick start X in what they THINK is correct vid card? Couldn't they start the X using VESA and then configure the X with correct driver AFTER getting X up and running? At least, then I can decide to back out to VESA mode right away and get the vid driver from NVidia.I can see how if you have NEVER worked with Linux, you would have issues directly editing Xorg.conf file to enable VESA mode to get things going in the first place. If it was like, let's say my wife, then should have gone back to XP. Now, to be honest, XP is not too bad. MS softwares are not too bad. I may have to use VMWARE player just to boot up XP to run some of my favorite programs. now that I found out that there isn't a really good GUI based DVD authoring software for Linux (I know about DVDauthor and it is not gui based and I could not get qdvdauthor to work. I may have to compile it from the source later when I can find time.)I do like Nomachine remote connection application. This thing is awsome, Windows RDP does NOT touch the performance of this gem. This app alone would be worth my time to keep the Ubuntu as my main OS of choice. Like I said, at this point, I will have to give thumbs up to XP just because of the default graphics choice not working on my machine and having to manually configure the X.XP is not perfect, Linux is not perfect. At least, for Linux you can try it for free before saying it sux. :)
