The idea behind the CueCat is still alive and well in Japan... Q-Codes. Just about everything has one and most cell phones can scan them with their built-in camera - which then launches a webpage.

I remember watching The spirits within in theater. Too bad it was such a financial flop, I found it a enjoyable enough movie.
