online.wsj.com — The list offers a nice point-counterpoint of why your IT department considers something a risk, how you can bypass their roadblocks and do it anyway, and perhaps more importantly how to get around it in a manner that won't completely freak out your IT department. (I'm not saying it won't just a little.)

Hey IT dweebs. It's not up to you how I do my job. Before there were computers nobody controlled if you talked to customers from a home phone and nobody searched brief cases to see if you were taking memos out of the building. People will use whatever tools they see fit to get their job done and they won't hold up business waiting for your approval. If you can't help me do what I need to do, and I mean right now, then don't expect a farewell lunch when they outsource your job to India, 'cause nobodies going to be fighting to keep you here.

yeah, we complain. but you'd suprised how good it makes you feel when you realise 99% of the worlds population are such morons when it comes to computers, that you can litterally make up s**t, and they still believe you. it feels good, REALLY good

So you're saying you have the right to say "I'm not going to do the job I'm paid for, because someone with less knowledge of IT made a mistake I wouldn't". Good luck keeping your job, wanker.

oh, Im not saying IT people DO get away with it. but they are the most likely to successfully get away with it. I work for one of the largest mining/support companies in the world. our IT department is but a small section of a global IT department with over 500 employees. we cant get away with this type of behaviour either. not that were stupid enough to try. I, and my colleagues either leave our non-work stuff till we are not working, or, if we really need to, we all have wireless broadband and laptops (personal) that we often bring into work. my internet connection, my laptop. I can do whatever the hell I like on it, and it doesnt ever touch the work environment. thats the best secret your IT department WANTS you to realise. If you HAVE to do non-work crap at work. USE YOUR OWN s**t. we do
