articles.techrepublic.com.com — Thanks to improvements within Mac OS X, admins face fewer headaches when they need to connect Macs to Windows networks. But there are still some issues to deal with, like enabling File Sharing and creating Windows user accounts on the Macs, configuring printer sharing, and working with File Services For Macintosh.

chris : the mistake most people make when making something completely idiot proof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete idiots

I was networking with my buddies macbook just a week ago...i just setup ftp servers. f windows sharing, that never works right for me. Isn't it slow and a resource hog too?

Yea I use FTP too, just much easier to setup. Make them an accountGet them to bookmark it in their browser, or if needbe, get them to download a program, enter a number, a name and a password, and off they go.

Same here. Windows file sharing (correct name is Server Message Block or SMB) is nice when it works - it has support for larger files than CesarFTP (my imperfect FTP host program) - and speed is fine, and even better when you use FreeDownloadManager's acceleration. (It support 'downloading' files from your own hard-drives, and in SMB on Windows they are accessed as such.)My only problem with it is that on Windows it just doesn't work. I'm not the only person I know who can't get his PC to share files (always asks for a password - I don't use any password for Windows). If you try Knoppix as an SMB host it seems to work fine. Most ironic.Sometimes you can get it to work using the address of two backslashes followed by the host's IP (no space) rather than using their computer name, but even using that it doesn't work a lot of the time.

One gotcha to add. We ran into an issue with Adobe Indesign running on the Macs and the files being on a Win2K3 r2 server where In Design would not work properly. It has something to do with the way the hidden directories (.*) were being handled. The work around was to update the Macs to the latest version of OSX. There are also some further gotchas when running MAC shares on a windows box that exist. There's an add on software (MacServerIP : No affiliation) that is out that purports to solve these issues.

"#3: Windows user accounts must be created on the Mac"incorrect, you can use ldap authentication (as in active directory), in fact im working with an AD account on my osx machine atm.
