crunchgear.com — The dead tree book will never die - I think it will even have more longevity and popularity than the boutique appreciation of vinyl records - but our generation will be the last to use “books” as our primary reading systems. Expect ebooks to hit colleges in perhaps five years and high schools and grade schools in about 7.

That was ridiculously informative and absurdly unhelpful. I still have no idea if I want a kindle 2 or not.

I'd rather get the Sony eBook reader. It's a far better product, as ironically it allows more types of files to be read on the device than Amazon's (without emailing it to be converted for 10¢ a pop). It also takes external memory cards (SD and MS).Amazon's Kindle is good if you want to buy all of your content from them, I suppose.

Ran out of time to edit, so sorry but:How about an agnostic slate that possesses a ten dollar chip that renders any format, an SD card or USB port, a cheap transparent LCD screen that you backlight like a Viewmaster (hold it up and let light shine through), 4 AAA rechargeable batteries, and a 99 dollar price point. Hell, make a version with 4 D cells and you could run it for a month or two between charges. And forget about color, not for a simple reader.Or how about: use LED backlighting, but gain a device back plate covered with photoelectric cells that charge the batteries when you aren't reading? And there are hundreds of thousands of books out there that are already scanned, free for the taking. Ditto almost every comic book ever made. We've been ready for years. They don't want us to have it, because they are afraid their distribution system would be destroyed.

If my dorm is cramped like a Kazakhstani dungeon, I won't have the room for more books.

Best reason: you can use it to read free books downloaded from web.

I'd rather walk around school with 10 books in my hand than that thing. I'd rather not waste US$360 on something I know will die in a student's possession -_-

Some of the business and law books you may need for university are a couple hundred dollars cheaper digitally.Sometimes a couple books and it pays itself off.
