venturecake.com — This simple guide will bring up the Windows start menu inside GNOME and allow you to run, use and install any Windows app (that can run in a VM) inside your existing desktop. It takes about 10 minutes to setup, minus the time to install Windows, and involves one command in total.

Doesn't this defeat the purpose of using Ubuntu in the first place? Or is it like you get all of the best features from both operating systems like... compiling software... and... startup scripts or whatever it is that gets your rocks off from Ubuntu.

I think it was pretty straightforward using XP different hardware profiles, but don't think vista has those.

i'm dual booting winxp + ubuntu. now if i install windows in a VM i actually need a *second* license of windows since the host & virtual machines are not considered to be the same machine (somebody correct me if i'm wrong). I'd love to do this, but i just don't have that 2nd license of windows. be aware of this before you sit through the lengthy windows xp install + winxp sp2 install.

Try it. You may find that the opposite is true.

The real question is: Why would you *want* to run Vista?Everything you would want to use Windows for can be done on XP.

Lots of comments on the flickering effect of the taskbar. My solution was to move the taskbar to the left or right hand side. The MS Taskbar seems to have a hard time with AWN (avant window navigator) overlapping it. If you close AWN the flickering stops and if you move the MS Taskbar the flickering stops!Mike
