Maybe he is refering to flash media like sd and mini-sd, which are the right size and price these days to hold an OS. I'm not sure on the speed but I think I have seen a mod out there for one of the EEE pc's which uses some sort of sata connector to the flash reader.
Of course he would. What does he need to learn anyway, how to click on the Firefox icon? That the applications are in the Applications menu? That his email is accessible by clicking on the thing that looks like an envelope? That he can install just about anything he wants through Add/Remove in the Applications menu?I know I'm over simplifying a little bit, but if you are maintaining your grandfather's PC then Phate8263 is correct. He'll be safer and you'll have less to worry about on something like Ubuntu. The only one you'll need to train is yourself and it really isn't that hard to learn what you need to learn--you'll be surprised at how silly it was to assume you knew what you were talking about when you could've learned for free.
Buried. These are just upgrades, period... No insight into more economical upgrades, or those geared towards particularly old PCs. Specifying the importance of AGP or PCI video cards in older PCs, tips for buying older parts on Ebay, links to cheaper sellers (Newegg, maybe? People who need this sort of advice would try and buy from Wal-Mart...), and a number of other things could have made this more focused and informing. My seventh-grade English teacher would be proud.
