slate.com — "I took a look at 10 clocks currently on the market. I spent an evening getting to know each clock (reading their instruction manuals, fiddling with their buttons and knobs) before I took them to bed for a one- to two-night stand (depending on how well we got along)."

I have the iHome, and honestly, all I use it for is to play my iPod when I'm at my desk. I used it as an alarm for a while, but there is no way to change the volume at which the alarm sounds, so every morning it comes on super loud and jerks me out of sleep while I scramble across the room to turn it off. Also the buttons click WAY too loud, the backlight is always too bright, and the volume doesn't go quite low enough (for when its like 2 am and I don't want to wake everyone up). Also, when I wake up in the morning and my eyes aren't fully functioning, I can't make out any of the numbers on the screen. The screen is black on blue, not a good combination.

but what if it's dark in your room and you just want to nap for 20-30 minutes?will the sun peek out causing you to not be able to go to sleep?i have to sleep with the blinds closed, all lights off, and my computer is starting to have a slight fan whir that is pissing me off.and those darn morning birds. they come out earlier every year i swear. before sunrise, like they have nothing better to do.i have a pretty cheap (29.00) GE alarm clock ( http://www.home-electronics.net/documents/74853_102715_25.pdf ) with the auto-dim, two-alarm times, 10minute-2hr naps, graduwake, and very easy big buttons. it doesn't look so bad either, just a little big. the tone was pleasing at first, but now it's starting to annoy me. it's still sounds better than those ugly red alarm clock beeps. i think the green is pleasing, but i always turn it backwards so i get the full speaker effect without the display shining in my eye.how hard would it be to replace the tone in a DIY project? anyone?

I love my Nintendo DS as an alarm click. Starts off soft and gets louder. Doesn't jolt you awake. Great for when I travel cause it runs on batteries. :-)

You guys - and, in particular, any anglophiles amongst you - should go to this site: www.voco.uk.com, and buy one of their amazing alarm clocks. It's like being woken up by your own personal butler and, in a word, the experience is awesome.
