This is why I'm going to wait a year or two before I think about buying one. The first generation product always has bugs and just sucks!! The price will probably be lowered too. And, you know Apple, I wouldn't be surprised if they released an improved version of iPhone within the next couple months. It happened to me when I bought my first iPod mini...2 months later the "new and improved!" Mini came out, followed by the Nano less than a year later. I'm glad I am sensible enough not to look like a fool waiting in line for days for a $600 phone...I can buy a frickin desktop computer for that price!!
I agree that some of his complaints are extremely minor, and he's likely get used to them- such as complaint number 3, which deals with writing. But I think you're kind of oversimplifying the issue; no amount of learning curve will give him the ability to download things from websites, which I think we can all agree would be a pretty good feature to have on an 8 GB device that can browse the internet on the go. Browsing/transferring files via Bluetooth would also be a good feature to have- I'm not saying that it's something a phone HAS to have, but for such an expensive and cutting edge device, it'd be nice not to have to resort to wired connections. But this is really the first generation iPhone here. I'm positive Apple will just continue to improve this device, and perhaps build these features in- early adopters of any technology should know they're not getting a perfect product.
I agree with quite a few of the above points and all the other ones I have been reading, but I think people are forgetting a lot about the real reason behind the iPhone. This is very interesting, everyone has such high hopes that this device will be the be-all-end-all device, and that it will suite everybody's needs. I think people need to realize that the iPhone was really designed to be what Apple thinks will suit peoples needs leaving the functions that it feels is less important out in order to simplify a ridiculous operating system world. I mean look at the world of cell phones right now, we have Windows CE(and variations), Palm, Symbian (and all the variations from there), and now Apple's iPhone OS. They all attempt to achieve different goals, and I think what Apple attempted to achieve, it did a hell of a job. Their goal was to shake up the mobile market, make people realize that they cannot just develop on "patching" small things here and there, that they need to really think out of the box. The UI is amazing on the iPhone, yes, it does lack features, but that is what is the beauty of it, that it has an opinion. I'm sure they made some pretty hard decisions, and in the end, they know they can't please everyone. But I'm sure that the amount of iPhone returns will be outweighed by an insurmountable amount. The iPhone was designed to be simple, smart, and effective at doing its job, and it does just that. I am not only an Apple fan-boy, but just a fan of technology in general. Apple has undoubtedly shaken up the industry, it will only be more interesting to see how the other companies step up in terms of hardware and software design / engineering.
I cannot believe that it doesn't work as a modem. I was planning on buying one until I found out about this last week. I love Apple and their products, I have five Macs and frequently upgrade so I always have a current machine, but until they offer this functionality I will stick to my Treo. There is all this hype about all of these new features that the iPhone has, but for all of the features they left off I still think the Treo is a much better phone overall. Oh, and it also has an AIM client. :)

$500 or $600 will buy you a nice beta test of Apple's latest.
