smashingmagazine.com — You may have a personal portfolio website for a number of reasons. If you’re a freelancer, then you’d need one to showcase your work and allow people to contact you. If you’re a student (or unemployed), then you’d need one to show prospective employers how good you are and what you can do, so that they might hire you.

Smashing Mag is a good excuse to show off some nice design for inspiration rather than actual useful information I find. If this info is helpful then chances are you still use Frontpage.

Just set up a separate account for networking, don't use your personal account.

11. make sure you put words on your website so potential employers can read them. This will help them know about you more.

I can certainly understand where you're coming from. But is there anything an actual email link can do that an email form could not?I still lets them contact you, but it obfuscates the email address. Additionally, you can route the message within your company based on a selection from a drop down like support, sales, billing, other, etc.

For me it's about contact availability. Some people simply demand an actual way to contact you, not by filling out an automated form and having that sent off to wherever it ends up. It's why I don't use forms on my site...partially because I hate filling them out myself :)

I (and many other people) just would rather email from my own email application or account rather than fill in a form. If they were always as simple as "name, email, message" that would be one thing, but many sites try to force too much info out their users. It's annoying. Why not have a clickable email address and a simple form available on a contact page and let people choose? And you can use an email obfuscation script too.http://www.alistapart.com/articles/gracefulemailob ...

I can see that this can seem inspiring, and usually i love being inspired. I think the quality examples were so good that infact i felt put of because there's no way i can compete. But I am sure this is just a moment of weakness. They are indeed simple steps, but the most important and sometimes over looked. Great article.

I would also like to add such steps as header and footer design to this list!
