This "we survived without it" is total garbage. We also survived before refrigeration, electricity, and cars. Pointing out CFCs, electrocution, and road rage doesn't negate that these things are positive, though. When someone's stabbing you, don't tell me to call for help. Or when your car breaks down, you can walk to the nearest pay phone, assh**es.
Cell phone free since 2002.Had one for three years.Never liked the sound quality on cell phones, or the periodic break ups.Never much cared for the "always available" either. The only thing I miss is the convenience of meeting up with people if you get separated at a bar or ball game, etc....
Yep, just about every phone I've ever had let you silence the ringer simply by hitting one of the volume keys on the side. My current phone will even let me choose between "Ignore" which sends the call to voice mail immediately, and "Silence Ringer" which stops the ringing on my end, but the person calling still hears the normal number of rings before hitting voice mail. So it's not necessary to be rude to the people around you when you ignore a phone call. And, yes, when possible I generally will listen to the message within a minute or two of it being left, so if it really was a legitimately important call, they'll be hearing back from me within a very, very short time. There are times, though, when I'm just not in the mood, or an appropriate situation, for one of those 10 minute "just called to see what's up" conversations.

I didn't say they aren't convenient, just that they aren't necessary like so many people seem to think.

RE: "It enslaves you to a one-sided contract" Amen to that. Apple and Time Warner do the same and soon I'll be rid of them as well.
