mashable.com — If you asked most MySpace-haters what's their problem with the service, they'd probably say: it's ugly. Meanwhile, people tell us they are switching from Twitter to Pownce because it's prettier and easier to use. I like http://Jaiku.com the best. You can use RSS to have things you post on your other sites appear in your Jaikus. It makes a nice, simple, centralized online presence. I use Imified to post to Jaike&Twitter at once but it also posts to many other sites, like wordpress sites, MT, tumblr etc. But there's just something about jaiku, it's simple like twitter but has more featuers. And as far as beautiful-ness, you just use whatever background you want. Mine is at http://laserone.jaiku.com/

Yeah, orkut is where it's at if you're into Estonian or Brazilian babes. And I'm actually a little bit serious!

I've just made pitching Virb to them a part of the background noise to every conversation on Myspace. Soon they'll all be on Virb and won't even realize when the switch happened.

Answering your first question, your friend may have other friends on MySpace who they'd like to stay in touch with. Answering your second question, friends stay better connected, duh. Social networks allow users to be *omniscient* in their social spheres. It's arguable whether it's healthy or not, but that's a different subject.
