shutdownday.org — Shutdown Day is back with a bang! More than 1.6 million people worldwide participated in Shutdown Day last year ... and this year there's a crazy global Flash Mob too!A massive global experiment to spread awareness about the pitfalls of excessive use and abuse of computers and Internet.

It's a personal goal rather than a holiday dumbass...

I already look like a complete tool. A backpack won't make a f**king bit of difference.

I think it was a crappy move by shutdown day to email us and not tell us when shutdown day is. Now if I was sane I would have just closed the email and marked them as spam never to hear from them again. It doesn't even say immediately on this digg page that they linked to.

I think this is a great idea. Unfortunately, I work Saturday morning and have to be on a computer.

I don't think those guys want you to blow your computer to pieces if you are studying or running a nuclear powerplant: http://www.shutdownday.org/faq/

Many of you who have commented are missing the point completely. It's not about saving energy, it's not to make any kind of statement. It's solely for the self-enriching experience of trying to go a day without a computer. Define what that means for yourself. For some that may just be your personal laptop, for others that may mean no video games, computers, or cell phones. Just test yourself. See if you can do it. I bet many of you can't, hence all the whining. This was around last year as well, and is not part of the recent social fad of "Don't buy gas for a day!" and other crap like that. It's not saying that your electronics are killing the earth. It's just saying that you're probably addicted to them. And it'd be right.
