hdtvorg.co.uk — With a very short history of why tv's had an original resolution of 576 lines the article clears up some of the confusion surrounding new High Definition format resolutions and why there are more than just one.

Man I'm so glad my new HD 47 inch Westy is 1920x1080. Does it all, and is fine in all that it does by my standards and price range. I love it! Awesome as a PC display as well. Does 1080p on my pc like a charm as well.. (Again, by my standards, I care not if you've seen better at your uncle Ronnies house:-)

"Only CRT monitors display interlaced images."If the signal is interlaced. One set of lines changes then the next. What is so hard to understand?

and 1080i if you plan to only view the title screen.

1080p 24fps would only be good for movies and film source, not good for high motion things like sporting events. 720p is sixty frames per second when recorded digitally, and 1080i is the same (albeit 60 half frames a second.) So when we talk about 1080p, we really should be talking about 1080p60.Plus, when you're dealing with such a low frame rate like 1080p24, it translates very well to 1080i60 and thus not really necessary.

Yea, H263 is really good and would allow for everyone to cram a lot more HD channels out of their bandwidth. If the satellite companies used it, they wouldn't have to downsample almost everything to 1280x1080.The crappy thing is that the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray specs also allow for H263, and at the bandwidth available from those discs the video would be so free of artifacting that you'd never know it was compressed. Unfortunately, MPEG2 decoders are really cheap, and H263 decoders are really expensive. So, we have MPEG2. It's not terrible, really, but things could have been better. Oh well.

What? What part makes you think I don't understand? I probably have more background on the subject then you do, working for the broadcast industry and all..
