Bosox fan here. I made peace with the Sunday loss to the Rays that the Sox won't make the postseason. They're just not as good as the Rays or Yankees. Granted, had Pedroia, Youkilis and Ellsbury played all season, we might be looking at one of the most exciting division races, but injuries happen, and sometimes, about once a decade, a team just gets wiped out. These are my hopes for the off-season: re-sign Beltre, work a deal with the Dodgers and get Matt Kemp for Ellsbury, with a few other lesser players involved, and shore up the bullpen. I like Kalish a lot, and McDonald has really stepped up this year, but Nava's a bad fielder, and doesn't have enough patience at the plate, despite a beautiful swing.

I think Nava's patience at the plate will develope as this is a benchmark of his at every level (even in pro ball, a high OBP guy he is).
Why Kemp? Why not Eithier? Hasn't Kemp had his own problems this year? I'd vote to keep Ellsbury unless they sign Crawford in the off season! Ellsbury has something to prove in 2011 & his rib injury, coupled with the style he plays, makes it difficult for me to cut bait with him so soon! This may also be my heart writing as I do like what the kid brings to the table & to me is the ultimate leadoff hitter for the Red Sox!

LA won't trade Ethier, that's why. Kemp's had trouble with the Dodgers and a change of scenery would do him so good. Ellsbury was my favorite Sox until this year, but he doesn't seem interested in staying with the Sox (thanks, Scott Boras), so why not trade him when the value is high? As for Nava, there's probably a reason he's 27 and has just made it to a big league team, and that wouldn't have happened without the injuries. He's frightful to watch in left field, as opposed to Kalish, who's a terrific fielder.

I totally agree about Nava's fielding! Kalish is the real deal & should be in RF replacing Drew ASAP!
About the playoffs, I'd like to see the Reds, but hearing Joe Morgan go on & on & on about his days with them would be torture! I'd also like to see either the Rays or the Rangers in the series for the AL & either the Reds or the Padres in the NL. If it was two of those four teams I'd be happy!

Ah, but Joe Morgan's on ESPN and FOX carries the Series!

Peter, there was absolutely nothing missing in this article. I knew nothing about the Boston Red Sox, 2010 version before and not even interested. Now I feel like a Red Sox guru and I'll be pulling for them to finish strong, even if that's not likely.

Thanks Gary!

I'm impressed with the comments to this post. It is nice to read some intelligent conversations about the Red Sox. I am loyally fan since 1966, ironically the same year I was born, thanks Dad. I agree Kalish is the real deal and needs to be on the roster, but do not be surprised if he starts in triple a next year unless Cameron is still hurt. shown the door(unlikely?) or McDonald signs with another team. Jacoby stock is high but it may climb higher. I bet he starts with the Soxs unless something significant happens like signing Crawford, trading for Gonzales. etc
I would like to see what this team could do with the majority of the positions players in uniform. This is why I would resign Beltre,, Victor and I never thought I would say this resign Big Poppy-Find some bull pen help-And, let it ride. But if Gonzales could be had for a Ellsbury/Kelly package without much else that move should be considered
