The Olympics is supposed to be for amateurs only. Or they owe Jim Thorpe a big apology and his metals back.
Mudlark48Jan 26, 2012
Whaaat ? Olympics is supposed to be for the best athletes representing their country.
akomabantotJan 26, 2012
So you will send professional boxers also? and every professional athletes in any other sports?
coldkatJan 26, 2012
why not? isn't the olympics supposed to be the pinnacle of athletic competition?
i understand the concept of amateurs only, but i don't think you should penalize an athlete from competing in the olympics because they are good enough to be able to play/compete for a living outside of the games.
should be a best of the best, period.
BluntzworthJan 26, 2012
Well they do with hockey.
canadianmacfanJan 26, 2012
And get rid of the professional hockey players too.
ninhJan 26, 2012
The vast majority of sports cannot send pro athletes to the Olympics, why should the NBA (or the PTA, for that matter)?
canadianmacfanJan 26, 2012
Greed. Getting the professional basketball (and hockey) players in boosts TV ratings and brings more money in. It's not about the sport anymore.
Reelplaymakers1Jan 26, 2012
The NBA players should view playing in the Olympics as playing in a legit once every four years All-Star game.
emfkJan 25, 2012
Just when I was beginning to like him again. Sheesh.
shingoexJan 26, 2012
If the US can find better players than what we have in the NBA, then fine. Otherwise, countries are supposed to bring their best to the Olympics, and our best is in the NBA.
doodlemasterJan 26, 2012
Although it'd be funny if our B team won :P
bigirvJan 26, 2012
They always used to win. Then the other countries started sending their pros to the Olympics. The USA didn't have much choice if they wanted to compete. Turns out to have been a huge boom to the NBA attracting talent and fans from around the world.
hediggmeJan 25, 2012
Basketball (and soccer and baseball/softball) shouldn't be in the Olympics anyway. It's not the most prestigious event for them.
StonnaJan 26, 2012
soccer, baseball and softball shouldnt. Basketball should be left to college athletes who most likely arent going to the NBA imo
stevanoskiJan 26, 2012
Because the Brazilians and Europeans keep beating team USA?
kijo524Jan 26, 2012
Can we just ban Dirk from playing for Germany?
Closed AccountJan 26, 2012
he's whining again. the olympic is a true all star game. not based on popularity or likeability but based on if you are truly good enough. with this U.S. lineup the USA wins gold again. kick ass...
copernicuskidJan 26, 2012
Cuban is so greedy. End of story. He can't bare to see some of his players making profits for other people. So he whines and whines about millions of dollars that he isn't getting?
Isn't that dickbag rich enough? Oh yeah he is #459 of the world's richest people...shut the f#$k up Cuban
bigirvJan 26, 2012
It's not the money he's not getting. It's the risk of injury to his players that is bothering him. If Dirk goes down with an injury because of the Olympics, Cuban is out 10s of $M.
copernicuskidJan 27, 2012
i'm pretty f**kin sure he can spare a few million dollars...thats my point
PigskinDoctorsJan 25, 2012
what a douchebag
bigirvJan 26, 2012
...for wanting to protect his investments? He has to pay his players if they are hurt or not. If they get hurt in the Olympics, Cuban is out a ton of money.
thezonerJan 25, 2012
That's Franco Un-American
hibby76Jan 26, 2012
We should send our best whoever they are (assuming they want to play). Isn't that what the Olympics are supposed to be about???
......or were we talking about the special Olympics?
deac714Jan 26, 2012
The Olympics should be a venue (when it comes to b-ball, at least) for guys who have yet to go pro to show that they can play with the best amateurs across the country.
It might be cool to see some guys who are going to be tomorrow's big NBA ballers going against each other.
Sure, Cuban has a vested interest but he's right. No pros would be a good move.
bigirvJan 26, 2012
the best pros in the world all play for the NBA. If the NBA bans their players from the Olympics, then we'd have the next best level of players which would include amateurs from the US and pros from around the world that aren't good enough to make the NBA.
deac714Mar 6, 2012
bigirv, this is why I would like no pros from any country. Let it be all amateur.
steven00156Jan 26, 2012
Let's ban Mark Cuban from NBA first.
bigirvJan 26, 2012
Cuban is the best thing for the NBA. He has worked tirelessly to promote and to grow the NBA. The other owners are all following his lead. Like it or not.
mentorishJan 27, 2012
That was really dumb of you to say. Granted you have your own opinion and you're probably sticking to it. But do your facts... Cuban brings nothing to the NBA for headaches and hot air. I'll give respect where respect is due, he made some good business decisions that got him the Mav's. But he is full of himself and has no right to talk about who should or shouldn't go to the Olympics.
bigirvJan 27, 2012
"Cuban brings nothing to the NBA" ...and my comment is dumb? I live in the Dallas area and can see all the things he has done to promote the Mavericks and by extension the NBA. The Mavs were a joke for years before he bought them. He has sold out every home game since through proper promotion and good product. He has brought increased value to the league. He has showed the other owners new ways to promote. Is he a rich blowhard? Of course he is. He's annoying as hell at times, but he is smart, hard working and has a passion for winning -- more than most NBA owners can claim.
mentorishJan 27, 2012
Agree to disagree. I'm sure he's doing good things for the Dallas, Texas but to say he's changing the way other owners think is a bold statement... The only thing he's passionate about is being a d-bag (I can say that from personal experience).
He's trying to keep HIS investments safe but one thing this prick isn't thinking about is that it's not ALL about him. These athletes want to compete for their Country. He wants to stop them from representing their talent on the World's stage. The comments he makes in the article should piss off even Dallas fans.
Mudlark48Jan 26, 2012
the guy just gets crazier. Why OH Why ? you think by doing this ? he takes away all the stars the United States has ? Well lets look at the bigger picture now. If the NBA players get banned. Spain loses 3 of its best players (i.e the Gasol brothers and Ricky Rubio ) who were the reason behind Spain getting to the final of the last Olympics. Argentina loses Ginobli who by far is the most versatile player in the entire NBA League.
I`m not sure where this guy is coming from. Nothing but stupid.
bigirvJan 26, 2012
He wants to protect his investment. NBA player contracts are all guaranteed. If Dirk goes down in the Olympics, Cuban is out big money.
gbvietoJan 26, 2012
Finally Mark Cuban and I can agree on something. Have college players on our basketball team and not those prima donnas.
uaguilarJan 26, 2012
Dude... this guy just wants to protect his asset. Did you read his quote? Its all about protecting his asset that he has millions invested in. What about this dont you guys get? Im starting to see this digg site is a bunch of liberals idiots who dont get economics
alecsputnikJan 26, 2012
Not everything has to be about money and profit. In America, some of us have something called "National Pride" where we would put our country first, not money.
uaguilarFeb 4, 2012
To him.. his players are assets. It's why in the contracts they sign with the team.. the players are not allowed to engage in activities that increases their chances of getting injured.. like riding motorcycles and s**t like that. I'm sure if he didn't own a team and have huge contracts with players he would be very happy to see these guys play in the Olymplics
jtsmith602Jan 26, 2012
The guy needs to realize that NBA players participating in the olympics (mainly this last run to gold by the USA) was a gigantic PR machine for the NBA, and a huge reason for the revitalized interest in the NBA that is lining Cuban's pockets right now.
AnneliseEJan 27, 2012
I guess when you are a billionarie you can dictate other people's lives...

I guess when you are a billionarie you can dictate other people's lives...
markwikJan 27, 2012
There simply shouldnt be basketball in the Olympics anyway. It's not the highest honor available in the sport and makes a mockery of other events whereby the gold medal actually means 'fastest/strongest/best in the world' etc.
chongqingkingJan 27, 2012
the Olympics give NBA the biggest two-week international marketing boost... without having the league pay a single cent.
David Stern probably sneered at Mark's remark in private.
TinyTonyJan 26, 2012
It's funny how owners treat NBA players like collectible toys.
If he's so butthurt about it, why don't you just try to get the NBA to charge the Olympics front office for using NBA players?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
