Unfortunately it wasn't the best :/
rundiggmcJul 12, 2010
Yeah, I'm glad the best team won the championship, but the final did little to entertain those who love soccer and nothing to win over casual or potential fans.
sebsnJul 12, 2010
your right, holland winning it would be horrible
bigbadgoatJul 14, 2010
Holland is only a part of the Netherlands, it would be like referring to the US as "Texas"
joejitsuJul 14, 2010
It was better than the final of the last world cup.
lavaJul 14, 2010
and it has to win them over... why? It's the most popular sport in the world.
supernova36Jul 14, 2010
It's perfectly acceptable to call the Netherlands football team Holland, and many Dutch people do. Unless a large amount of Americans call their team Texas, then it's nothing like your example.
cyberdorkJul 14, 2010
@bigbadgoat: Maybe you could keep the Dutch from shouting: "Hup Holland Hup" everytime their team plays...
wildJul 14, 2010
I was flipping through channels and stopped just to see what was going on. One minute later Spain scored and the game was over. Best world cup game I ever saw.
nationalistJul 14, 2010
i disagree with your sarcasm, but it is quite funny :)
d4rthv4derJul 14, 2010
I agree it was a horrible game and the dutch fouled way too often. The ref did a good IMHO. Even though the better team won, the Dutch blamed the ref, which is almost as pathetic as the Germans blaming the octopus for its lost.
kingskeletorJul 14, 2010
I started watching the game and after about five or ten minutes of nothing exciting, one of the spanish players takes a dive and switch the channel. I don't know how dedicated soccer fans put up with that BS, I loved playing as a kid but these sissys need to learn to be men. Besides everyone knows real men play hockey :D
stylecasterJul 12, 2010
and the longest!
jnewman83Jul 14, 2010
Dude....the last world cup went to PK's
juanbsuJul 14, 2010
It just seemed like the longest.
stevemaxJul 14, 2010
That would be Brazil x Italy in 1994. No goals, no real attempts from either side, no goals in extra time. No major event until Baggio kicked Italy out.
muffinmonkJul 14, 2010
It was dragging. No goals until 2nd OT? It felt like forever. But it was worth it for that wonderful goal.
branditaJul 13, 2010
Is this surprising? Each year more people get access to television. An added boost is that the US is finally getting interested.
bdbrJul 14, 2010
Do you really think that considerably more Americans have TVs vs the last World Cup?
hu99Jul 14, 2010
The World doesn't give s**t whether Americans watch the World Cup or not, we're good thanks.
brucealmightyJul 13, 2010
Whatever. Is it finally over now?
athinnesJul 13, 2010
The article is about the tv ratings for the World Cup Final.
What the f**k do you think?

So.... like what....20 people watched it?
doomesticJul 14, 2010
20 million in the US alone...
fastrunnernyJul 14, 2010
So about the same number of Americans that watch Desperate Housewives tuned in for the World Cup Final
doomesticJul 14, 2010
Well yes. Given the fact that they are proclaiming utter hate for the sport, 20 million is a surprising figure. Hell did the presidential debates get 20 million?
camilos007Jul 14, 2010
@fastrunnerny
I'm not sure what the usual ratings are for Desperate Housewives, since you seem to be a fan, perhaps you can let me know.
But the 20 mill rating for a sports game is very high. The 7th game of the NBA final drew a bit less than 20 mill as well.
camilos007Jul 14, 2010
Perhaps no one watched it in your hick town, the rest of the U.S. was actually tuned in.
heliumflashJul 14, 2010
I wouldn't say 20+ million is considered "the rest of the US tuned in"
fastrunnernyJul 14, 2010
Now imagine if it had been a Brazil vs. Spain final.
u8erJul 14, 2010
Brazil v Germany

And thus dies the "BZZZZ" meme.
hu99Jul 14, 2010
f**k, you guys are so original.
dspiralJul 14, 2010
I can honestly say that if it were not for social media (twitter, etc) and the fact that it was streamed free in Canada (thanks CBC) I would not have had anywhere near the interest that I did.
The fact that I could watch it on my second monitor at work, and read the twitter streams, pulled me into this event.
I can not remember caring whatsoever about the last world cup.
hu99Jul 14, 2010
If you didn't really care, then f**k OFF!
kisaJul 14, 2010
Lots of men hoping for BJs
cyzumJul 14, 2010
That's great news. What a great tournament. Let's hope it continues to gain popularity in the states.
natetendo83Jul 23, 2010
That would be awesome. Soccer is an awesome sport and I wish it would catch on a lot more here in the states.
custangroJul 23, 2010
Go Galaxy! :D
chaos7Jul 14, 2010
i played soccer much of my life, but watching it sucks. some games end in a tie. the scoring is too low. injuries get faked and exaggerated so much. penalty kicks after overtime is a terrible way to win a game. soccer needs to be fixed.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
strfxJul 14, 2010
How do you think it should be "fixed" then?
Coin toss? They did that a long time ago, and people hated it. Not exactly along the lines of "let the best team win"
Sudden death? Tried that, and most teams just tried to run the clock down in overtime. Really boring.
What else?
fearlessfreepJul 14, 2010
Bigger goals. Make the goals bigger and therefore harder to successfully defend and you'll have a lot more scoring and hence more excitement.
Anyone's who is injured in such way that causes time to stop cannot come back into the game for that half. Get back up and get your butt in the game; if you can't continue then the other team takes the penalty but you're out for the rest of the halfComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
fearlessfreepJul 14, 2010
Or better yet, if your injury is severe enough to halt time then you need the approval of the game's medical staff to resume play. If the medical stuff determines you were not actually injured (and they have access to replays for diagnostic purposes) then you are benched the rest of the game (and maybe some x number of subsequent games)Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
zipkoJul 14, 2010
A system that works is removing players in OT. Every 10 minutes each team removes a player. The open space will prevent never ending overtimes.
The size of the goals is fine. As for faking injuries, I think FIFA really needs to start cracking down on it. It's a penalty to take a dive, but they need to start calling it much more harshly. It almost never gets called ever. If a player repeatedly embelishes fouls then card them, but the emphasis for this needs to come from the top.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
rahazJul 14, 2010
Bigger goals would just make penalties impossible to block and shots from 30 yards out the best option. Stupid idea.
fearlessfreepJul 14, 2010
"Bigger goals would just make penalties impossible to block and shots from 30 yards out the best option. Stupid idea."
And hence games of 11-15 rather than 0-1. Would completely change the complexion of the game, but I bet you would have less 1-0 games decided in the 92 minutesComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
visual77Jul 14, 2010
I actually like the 1-0 games decided in the 92nd minute. I like that goals are challenging, but not time consuming. If your team is down 13-8 at 75 minutes, you can pretty well stop watching, but if they are down 2-1, the game is still very much on.
snkscoreJul 14, 2010
Instead of fixing it for you, I think maybe we'll leave most of it alone for everyone else in the world who likes it, which is pretty much everyone.
hu99Jul 14, 2010
You played, but still don't understand its nuances? The world of real football doesn't want you.

loconetJul 14, 2010
Might have to do with the fact that the word "world" in World Cup is literal for this event :]
bdbrJul 14, 2010
Might have to do with the fact that major league baseball is boring as hell.
fallout22Jul 14, 2010

Soccer: Slow as hell, but still more interesting than baseball or golf.

Such as? And don't say action because we all know there's none of that in baseball.
uruururrJul 14, 2010
mrchunks, you are just ignorant. even every single pitch is a psych out game of speed/motion/location... and that's just the tip of the baseball strategy iceberg. batting orders, bunts, hit and runs, relief pitching, intentional walk situations blah blah blah.
custangroAug 13, 2010
With all those reasons...it's still boring...
smackydoodleJul 14, 2010

bdbrJul 14, 2010
The article is about US ratings, not world.
duerraJul 14, 2010
Ok, so change world to America and the point still stands. Maybe not as strongly, but with all the ways we have today of accessing media - not just from broadcast TV, but from cable, the internet, cell phones, etc., everything is still that much more accessible than ever. I'd have been surprised if, with all the hoopla, it was anything but the most watched soccer game ever.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
muffinmonkJul 14, 2010
Doesn't really stand. 1990 is 290 million, 2000 is 300 million, 2010 is 310 million, an I'm pretty sure those born in the 21st century weren't really watching the World Cup, and can you also subtract the geezers, a chunk of the women demographic, and those who were working on that particular day?

trashyamericanJul 14, 2010
world cup is definitely a fun event to watch. here in states the most popular sports are hillbillies driving in circles, roiders from wwe hugging each other for 15 mins in ufc, cowardly roiders in heavy protective gear fighting over an egg, and roiders with sticks trying to hit a ball.
scooternrocketJul 14, 2010
Most American sport isnt a sport. Basketball where you have to be extra tall, short ppl dont get much of a chance. American Football the skilless game where most people just run into other fat ppl - a bit like Wipeout, lots of padding, pointless running. Just like Wipeout, most american footballs never touch a ball.

I wonder if social networking had anything to do with the ratings. I normally don't watch soccer, but all the fuss on Facebook and Twitter led me to tune in during the last half.

gregus1032Jul 14, 2010

They really need to do estimates on % of households/pubs that had the game on. That would be more news worthy imo.
