superkendallJul 12, 2010
Terrorists always go for the easy targets. It's not cowardice, when your goal is to kill as many people as possible you go where masses of people are.
"What they fail to realize is that there is not a government int he world which will change anything just because a few citizens were killed. they do not care."
They realize that just fine. Often they aren't looking to change anything except removing a few more non-muslims from the earth.

I seriously, seriously hope you are joking Faith. Buuuuuuuuuut.... no you're probably not. Wow.
artlukmJul 12, 2010
While it's true you "just have to watch out for the crazies," the problem we're facing today is that there is a huge number of "crazies" in the Islamic world. It cannot be understated. By contrast, the number of genuine crazies among Christians is lower, and the number of violent crazies is lower still. The reason for this is the Western World has evolved into an advanced secular society while much of the Islamic World is medieval at best.
So no, your statement does not disqualify the criticisms directed specifically toward Islam.
marx2kJul 12, 2010
ARTLUKM: There are a huge number of crazies in any fundamentalist society. Then you build a fundamantalist theocracy that does nothing but preach hatred towards anyone who doesn't fall within to that specific way of life, and you end up with *surprise* a bunch of crazies. Really, it doesn't matter what religion it is. the key is taking it to the fundamentalist extreme levels and mixing that with a fundamentalist theocracy. Or did you think the religion itself produces a bunch of crazies? 2 million plus non-fundamentalist Muslims living in America. Are you constantly sitting around with your finger on the trigger, peeking through the blinds waiting for one of them to walk by on the sidewalk?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
artlukmJul 12, 2010
Huh?
First of all, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are all basically the same religion, with various things added or removed. Islam happens to be the worst, but Judaism and Christianity are not far off.
Of course fundamentalist theocracy is the reason for problems in the Islamic World! That's basically my point. Why are you trying to ague with me on a point I never disputed?
It happens to be that the Islamic world has fundamentalist theocracies that breed religious madness. In theory, a similar Christian state could exist -- complete with medieval executions for adulterers -- but luckily, no such fundamentalist theocracy exists. You have to go a few hundred years back in time in Europe to find similar types of barbarism.
Modern Islamic fundamentalism is arguably worse, because it's essentially a combination of medieval barbarism and evangelical fundamentalism.
How could you defend such a thing?
artlukmJul 12, 2010
As for your remarks about Bush, he might be a fundamentalist Christian, and he most certainly was a cokehead at one point in time (maybe he still is), but the invasion of Iraq was hardly his idea.
Trying to paint such a simplistic and idiotic picture does no justice to proponents or opponents of the Iraq war.
The Iraq war is a neoconservative war. Neoconservatism has nothing to do with fundamentalist Christianity. While many fundamentalist Christians may have supported the war, their ideology is not the reason it happened.
Most prominent neoconservatives -- like Karl Rove and Bill Kristol -- are essentially atheists. I'm not trying to imply that most atheists support the war, but rather pointing out that most true neoconservatives are atheists.
Neoconservatism has a lot of unrealistic goals, success in Iraq being one of them. What makes matters worse is the influence of the military industrial complex, which stands to gain from an unwinnable war rather than an easy one.
There are a lot of factors that led to the neoconservative war in Iraq. But it is by no means a fundamentalist Christian war.
marx2kJul 12, 2010
ARTLUKM, I think I have misunderstood you in regards to fundamentalist Islam. I think we agree there. As far as Bush and the Iraq war, I can only refer to articles like: http://www.commondreams.org/headlines05/1007-03.htm - Though I agree with you on your points about neocons.

Sounds like Islamic-based militancy was behind it, and it was definitely terrorist. However, I will say that you are correct if you are questioning whether the motive was Islamic fervor or not. It could have been related to cultural or national hatred.

How long do we have to tolerate this sort of behavior? Sometimes there needs to be a breaking point, where you fight fire with fire, especially when everything else has failed to work.
Logic, reason and diplomatic talks will never accomplish anything with these people.
sulthernaoJul 12, 2010
I understand your anger, but there is no need to be bloodthirsty. By torturing them you'll only be giving them justification their terrorism.
You know what'll make them squirm the most? Eradicating their hate. I don't know how to bring peace to the world, but I do know that torturing them, while making you feel good, isn't going to solve the problem. It'll only make it worse.
If I were to try and end terrorism, I'd be investing in education and anti-poverty programs. I'd also promote some sort of exchanges that allows for inter-culture tolerance. Call me naive, but that's the only way I think that you can kill hate. Not through guns or torture.
Closed AccountJul 12, 2010
Well, call me cynical, but the only way to exterminate a culture or a mindset is to actually wipe out everyone who practices it.
So yes, based on historical events, I would say you're very, very naive. Life isn't a damn disney movie.

Please show us the article that links Islam to this act.
realcoolguy9022Jul 12, 2010
Take your web browser, scroll up to the top. Click the link up there. Hit control+f and type Islam.
Ignoring my initial snide remark, one has to understand that many leaders of the Islamic faith has condemned soccer as being non-religious. A few 'more lenient' types allow soccer, but the only statements that can be made by anyone is 'Allah is great'.
So I can show you several articles linking Islam to the condemnation of soccer, you can view this article which suggests that the primary suspect is saying Uganda is the enemy, and may Allah's anger be on them.
I too am having a hard time coming up with a situation where Uganda (only 12% Muslim, so considered in the realm of the sword by Islamic cultures) would have been attacked by anyone who was not religiously motivated to do this. Now Somali militants have always given Uganda grief, and Somalia is just about entirely Muslim.
The math here adds up almost too well, Soccer in a non-Islamic state. Islamic extermists attack said event against primarily non-Muslims. If you have a different scenario I'm all for hearing it.
You are right though, no one is claiming responsibility yet, and the investigation into who committed this act is not yet complete.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
