Much too close for comfort. Nice that we could finally put one away after so many shots on goal.

Nice that we could finally put one away that the refs couldn't call back
h3br3wJun 23, 2010
Our defense was still a little flat at times, but not nearly as often as the two previous matches. I think we've found a starting lineup that works. Might want to consider swapping Buddle in for Gomez, though. Can't believe we got that win, after being denied yet another goal(though this one not quite as blatantly retarded). Vintage performance by our side. GO USA!
kaiosamaJun 23, 2010
We finally beat the refs!

Yeah, if I'd have been watching that match instead of the England one I'd have been pissed at the amount that were disallowed.

mille716Jun 23, 2010
I woke up early today to get ready for the match and was watching my s**tty local news about 2 hours before it started. They were going to commercial and snuck in a comment about how the US and England won group C.
Those f**kers ruined what would have been the best nail-biter of a game.
s0vereignJun 24, 2010
This was one of the most intense games I've ever seen. My emotions went from rage (after another disallowed goal) to frustration (after so many missed opportunities) to disappointment (as the final minutes ticked away) to euphoria (as Donovan knocked in the winner). What a game. Now lets set our sights on Ghana!
rethreadJun 24, 2010
K, gimme a sec to be proud of America. That is all.
leefhJun 23, 2010
As an Algerian, I tip my hat. Well played, and very well deserved after the match against Slovenia.
branditaJun 23, 2010
That's what those Slovenians get for playing dirty.
hansdg1Jun 23, 2010
It was the Malian ref you dumbass.
kinross19Jun 23, 2010
As an American, I also would like to congratulate the Algerian team. They played a wonderful match and was able to make wonderful save after wonderful save.
I hope we meet again in four years!
Closed AccountJun 23, 2010
Nah they suuuuucked! ...our nuts.
USA! USA! USA!
iamjustinmJun 23, 2010
Were we watching the same game? Algeria played shameful! They played just to knockout the US and their fans cheered and danced when it was 0-0, when they could have advanced with a goal.
On top of that, they played dirty towards the end and the punch that busted Dempsey's lip was clearly intentional.
LeeFH is a good sport, but Algeria is deserved the outcome.
fugeesnfunionsJun 23, 2010
And THIS is why we can't have soccer in our country.. I never thought I'd say this about my fellow Americans but we're too... civil. Until we get to the intense vitriol and disgusting lack of respect for others like our European counterparts, we'll never be able to have the drama needed to distract enough people from their Big Macs and Lady Gaga.
Pshh we flip a few cars and light a couple small fires after a basketball championship? HA! We need 10x the intensity after EVERY. SINGLE. GAME! Mobs of people, injuries, mass destruction of personal and state property, fires, explosions, and a little bit of death.. Only then will we be able to join hands with the rest of the world and revel in our deeply seeded hatred for each other.
soaveJun 24, 2010
As those above me have said, Algeria didn't play to win at all. They had some cheap hits (the punch was absolutely deliberate), made sloppy passes, and walked whenever play was stopped (unlike USA who hustled to get the ball thrown in or kicked as soon as possible). Don't pretend that Algeria played a good match just to be a good sport.
s0vereignJun 24, 2010
I'm going to have to agree with Justin on this one. Algeria were playing dirty. Dempsey's bleeding face comes to mind...
kurttrailJun 24, 2010
Yeah, the hit on Dempsey was intentional, but Dempsey isn't the cleanest player either. I've seen him give quite a lot cheap shots over the years.
Hats off to Algeria!

salbatrossJun 23, 2010
You guys really have an incredible goalie. I felt sorry for him, after how hard he worked all game.
eliteturboJun 23, 2010
Algeria has a vicious team, wasn't sure we'd pull that off. That goalie was incredible.
novicechapJun 23, 2010
As a citizen of the internet, I would like to thank both teams for playing an incredible game. What a climax. Hope there are more games like this.
j0hnnyblazeJun 23, 2010
As a Frenchman, I surrender from the World Cup, on behalf of my country. Well played, and very well deserved after the match against Slovenia.
corporateninjaJun 23, 2010

iamjustinmJun 23, 2010
What? f**k that. f**k Algeria. Those bastards were celebrating the fact that they were going to knock out USA. They had just as much of a shot at advancing as anybody, yet they weren't even going for goal. GTFO Algeria, try and advance next time and maybe you will.
Sorry, but that's just the truth. Had USA not advanced everyone would have been talking about how Algeria was just trying to spite the US.
Too bad! USA! USA!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
adam07Jun 23, 2010
I have to agree. They were playing extremely defensively and only seemed to attack sporadically. It seemed like they were content with preventing the US from advancing with a draw instead of trying to win the game.
iamjustinmJun 23, 2010
They also started to play extremely dirty towards the end. Tasteless tackles, and then Dempsey received a punch in the face which busted his lip. That was clearly intentional and should have been a red.
I'm extremely happy to see Algeria go.
skyplatoonJun 23, 2010
I completely agree with all three of these comments. They were bordering on extreme dirt near the very end. Oh and f**k FIFA for taking ANOTHER deserved goal away.
kurttrailJun 24, 2010
What you guys don't understand is that playing defensive and looking for the occasional quick counter attacks is Algeria's game.
They aren't the only country that plays that way.
klipseracerJun 23, 2010

Way to go USA... from a Canadian.
I hope they make it all the way so we can take a bit of that stigma away from the MLS. We need to show the rest of the world that North American soccer is strong and viable.
rahazJun 23, 2010
The US international team is quite good and has been for a while but the MLS still blows.
I mean 2 of the 3 biggest reasons for the US's success in the cup play in the Premier League. (Dempsey and Howard vs Donavon)
cantholditdownJun 23, 2010
You're Not my Friend Buddy!
itsjalbertJun 24, 2010
The MLS won't be a serious league until they have something akin to a free market for players. The bargaining agreement really blows and keeps most of the talent out of the US. Teams get 1 or 2 players that they can pay decent money, besides that everyone else makes 30-60k a year. Also teams don't get to negotiate, all contracts are done through MLS for each team, so the league acts as a monopoly rather than clubs bidding against each other.
I'd much rather see teams with several decent players than have everyone paid peanuts and half the league's budget spent on Beckham.
triplehelixJun 24, 2010
Rahaz, 17 of the players on the 23 man roster have their roots in MLS.

I don't know what the american commentators tell u in the U.S but according to the rest of the world it was an offside, good call from the ref, Dempsley did not even complain nor did the other players, he knew he was offsideComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
mccuneJun 23, 2010
@Moussif
Show us some replay that indicates he was offside. He was even with the defender at the time the pass came in, that's not offside.
boeremaJun 23, 2010
No, I agree with Moussif: the shot in the Algeria game was too close to argue. Depending on which view you had of it, he was on the same plane as the ball or just ahead. Either way, we really didn't have advantage. If we would have lost the game, it would have been because we simply couldn't produce after we got the ball down the field.
If the US wants a chance to play with the big boys, we have to learn how to pass the ball effectively the ENTIRE game and not flub it when we get the ball near the box. I see way too many times when we just boot the ball down the field like 14-year-olds hoping one of our players will pick it up and make something happen.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
mccuneJun 23, 2010
If it's too close to argue, the the call should have gone to the attacker. The commentators have said multiple time that FIFA has instructed the refs to call it that way at this World Cup.
moussifJun 23, 2010
here's a screenshot from the moment he makes the pass, look at the distance between the algerian left leg and the corner line, and the distance between the american left leg and the corner line, it was close, but yes it was offside and a good call.
http://imgur.com/IBF2A.png
And this is from an awkward angle, now imagine how the ref (which is aligned with the players) see it.
Have a good dayComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
trollklrJun 23, 2010
@Mouseboy - nice pixelated screen cap there, which doesn't prove the argument one way or the other.
Like you said it was from an awkward angle, so trying to measure/analyze it from a pixelated piece of crap screencap gives you an opinion, not proof.
Most people on here believe Dempsey was even with the defender, why is that so hard to believe?
scoot2006Jun 23, 2010
They replayed it 3 or 4 times. I guess you guys didn't actually watch when they showed he wasn't offside over and over. Good try though.
qqmoreJun 23, 2010
Moosef**k thinks that if he repeats his lie enough, it'll come true. Everyone with a pair of working eyes and without a fist full of crumpets up their ass knows it was a terrible call, and england is still #2. Suck on it.

Yes, the one today could have been called either way. Unfortunate that it was against us though.

@Rahaz
No f**king way. Dempsey was level long after the ball was struck. England's goal was disallowed because it shouldve been, its not the same, and thats why people aren't complaining about it. Take a seat

rethreadJun 24, 2010
Just finished watching "Invictus", Apartheid and Nelson Mandela thing involving rugby. It's like American football, only the refs just get paid to break up the dogpile fights. It was weird, entertaining, and educational. Kinda like hockey on grass.
If you don't get hurt, there's something wrong apparently. Soccer, not so much. f**king actors.
moussifJun 23, 2010
true, sending off the wrong player at the end of the game was horrible, the guy did noy understand anything LOL
irjambyJun 23, 2010
To be fair, it wasn't the main ref. It was one of the line refs. The main ref did a fine job (except for the elbow to the face on Dempsey).
bmdubyaJun 23, 2010
I think this game was way better officiated than the Slovenian game. While there were some close calls that could have gone both ways, the Slovenian game was way worse. In all honesty, I wish people would stop complaining about the refs, and be excited we advanced! USA! USA! USA!
Closed AccountJun 23, 2010
yeah but then everyone else says stuff like "well you wouldn't be complaining about the refs if you'd won" about the slovenia game
petro62Jun 23, 2010
Lets not forget that the Americans had trouble finishing plays. We missed a wide open goal that should have put us up. I agree the offside was a bad call and so was the foul on Dempsey, but we might as well accept that there will be plenty of bad calls. We need to concentrate on finishing our plays.
Yeah I wanted the USA to win, but I was yelling at the commentators for saying the right guy was sent off. The guy who came in was pulling his players away. With all that said I think I remember reading that the ref for this match is very well respected and has done several big games before.
imandysmithJun 23, 2010
Howbout Beasely's Yellow card at 90' - They called a handball when it bounced off of his chest and carded him. I like how USA doesn't scream at refs like other countries, though. We respect officials.

When multiple players intimidate the referee, the captain is held responsible so he got sent off for that.

moussifJun 23, 2010
The 1st goal WAS offside according to FIFA Laws of the game, don't be delusional. Even the BBC commentators agreed. And Dempley did not even complain, he knew he was offside, nor did the other players.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
phantomrogueJun 23, 2010
Uhh, according to FIFA's official rulebook:
A player is not in an offside position if:
• he is in his own half of the field of play or
• he is level with the second-last opponent or
• he is level with the last two opponents
So, point 2 and 3... Go watch the replay on ESPN, it CLEARLY shows Dempsey is even with the last defender. So point 3... Check. Not offside.
Thank you very much for participating in How to Officiate 101. Please carry on with your day.
moussifJun 23, 2010
You're an idiot, here's a screenshot from the moment he makes the pass, look at the distance between the algerian left leg and the corner line, and the distance between the american left leg and the corner line, it was close, but yes it was offside and a good call.

Why do the ESPN pundits view mean its correct?
And this is football. It's what happens. Refferees make decisions and then you go to the pub with the lads have a pint and discuss it, agreeing and disagreeing but having a laugh. That'd the culture of football.
Why is everyone fighting?
qqmoreJun 24, 2010
"Why do the ESPN pundits view mean its correct?"
Because they actually saw the replay and relied on their HD overhead camera shot to make a judgement on it and not some s**tty grainy photo from a mile away that Moosef**ker up there is trying to pass off as proof. The call is either right or it's wrong and the pictures and videos show that it is indisputably wrong.
This is not up for debate or discussion. Discussion is for opinions. That it was an awful call is a fact, and neither you nor Moosef**ker are entitled to your own facts.

I don't get all the comments about the game being not-boring... I find soccer is boring most of the time as most league teams are much less powerfull than the national teams, and thus the matches are not so good. And for the record I live in Argentina.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
dospacJun 23, 2010
The games rules are poorly crafted for the level of competition at the world stage. Too much wiggle room and corruption due to the subjective officiating system and the impact it can have on the game.
To specifically address the boredom/excitement, I will just say that as far as major professional sports go(baseball, American football, tennis, basketball, volleyball, + lots more) the scoring frequency and impact of the play on the field as it relates to scoring is a lower percentage of the playing time compared to anything except maybe Golf. Even in golf you can jump around on a telecast and see lots of action back to back.
Now, as a sport to play, football is great! Almost zero barrier to entry compared to any other sport and it's very fun..
roketsJun 23, 2010
@testore I fact, most league teams are much more powerful then most of national teams. For example, World Cup football hardly can compete with Champions League football.
Players in clubs play and train almost every day together, not to mention that they can have foreign players ....

I think the best football of any game in the group was England's playing Slovenia today, but I think the best team overall over the three games was USA - thanks to England's miserable performance against Algeria.

happyimbecileJun 23, 2010
I haven't laughed that hard at a Digg post in a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if you're a FYAD or BYOB allstar.
kibblesnbittsJun 23, 2010
That was AWESOME!
lloydinatorJun 23, 2010
Landon Donovan will go down in US legend. The guy is just awesome. By the way, it should have been 2-0. Dempsey's goal was clearly onside.
anonymous1986Jun 23, 2010
It wasn't "clearly offside" it was onside, but barely. That said the linesman should usually give the benefit of the doubt to the attacking team.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
anothrnbdyJun 23, 2010
make that 3-0 for Dempsey's bloodied lip in the penalty box.
arialJun 23, 2010
2*-0 if we would have got it... a penalty kick is NEVER guaranteed
anothrnbdyJun 23, 2010
True that. I just don't see Dempsey or Donovan missing, though...
kuestionmarkJun 24, 2010
it would have been 1 - 0 and then an entirely different game would have followed;.
timfrostJun 23, 2010
Well done USA. A well deserved first place, you outclassed us throughout the group stages.
Yours, England.
scoot2006Jun 23, 2010
We both saved our own asses at the end. Cheers to you guys for making it through as well.
medjJun 23, 2010
Oh, a British boy. You know we saved your ass in World War II.
Closed AccountJun 23, 2010
hey you deserved to go through, too. or maybe rather, slovenia didn't. but no, you definitely outplayed your competition in all 3 games...just poor finishing.

The Algeria game is highly f**king debatable. England were dreadful.
emptyoJun 23, 2010
1. I couldn't believe I was screaming at the TV because of Soccer. Good on ya.
2. It was Tim Howards UNBELIEVABLE pass from goal that set the thing up. It was a perfect strike at full stride. What a sick throw from goal.
troyfoleyJun 23, 2010
Funny how it reminded me of a football (not futbol) play.
Closed AccountJun 23, 2010
There were two times during the game when I said to myself "damn, he should play quarterback"
leit89Jun 23, 2010
I agree that the throw was absolutely amazing and that Tim Howard in my opinion is the most talented player on the US side but throwing a soccer ball like a keeper is a completely different motion than throwing a football or baseball.
Or maybe I'm just over thinking things.
USA!!!
somerandomguyJun 23, 2010
When you think about it, that's a 2-goal switch right there. I believe one of the players defending just seemed to trust that Howard was going to get that shot and took off to start the break, they knew it was their only hope.
Howard with a clutch pass, Donovan not giving up on the play, Altidore trusting Dempsey enough to play it to him instead of having a go...
If any of those things go wrong, the US is likely going home.
But they're not...
HEEEELLLLLL YEEEEAAAHHHH!
misteratozJun 23, 2010
I watched the game and boooyyy were we lucky. The algerians were attacking out net like crazy but our keeper was great. Great game overall!
Closed AccountJun 23, 2010
Lucky? We had a goal taken away from us and still managed to win. That's not luck, son. That's a big ball of heart, skill, and composure paying off.
misteratozJun 23, 2010
Yeah I saw that, what happened there?
kaiosamaJun 23, 2010
The refs hate us.
But they can't stop us :)

i thought bornstein played well enough to get another start. and a damarcus beasley sighting? what year is this?
mccuneJun 23, 2010
Actually, their keeper had to do much more work. The Algerian's strategy was not one of all-out attack, but playing stiff defense and looking for quick counterattacks.
mizuhriJun 23, 2010
What game were you watching? USA had a goal that was taken and controlled most of the game. The only reason the Algerians had 48% is because they would keep it in on their side of the pitch and hit back to each other without advancing it. That took up a lot of time.
fidipidirocksJun 23, 2010
USA GTFI!!
jackman4535Jun 23, 2010
what a game. This is what the world cup is all about. You wait adn bite your fingernails to the bone and then in a blink of an eye it all changes. GREAT, I LOVE IT.

No wonder I heard everybody in the break room scream bloody murder from across the office.

You should probably go check it out for yourself if someone screams, "BLOODY MURDER!"
...well, depending on whether or not you want to risk your life.

What an Epic game US! Thank you for delivering in the end!! USA!!

devilsanthemJun 23, 2010
That was an awesome goal and awesome effort! We gotta get out early next time though.
snaxieJun 23, 2010
Donovan saved the day. You guys pool some cash and buy him a present? Let's get him a kayak....
leanmeatJun 24, 2010

One of the announcers said something along the lines of "If heart and spirit won matches, the US would be in the finals. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way."
Oh yeah?
cusomanJun 23, 2010
Tell that to the 1980 Olympic Men's Hockey Team.
The Miracle on Grass is coming, vuvuzelas be damned!
rkelly22Jun 23, 2010
Late in the game? Yes. Unexpected? Based on the number of chances they got, it was unexpected that they wouldn't score in the first place. Though they do know how to make it too close for comfort!
lanervozaJun 23, 2010
I agree. Unexpected is not the right word. It was definitely well-deserved.
redux2reduxJun 23, 2010
What was "Unexpected" was that it wasn't disallowed for yet another phantom reason.
matthewdukeJun 23, 2010
I pulled a hamstring when we scored!!!!
juanbsuJun 23, 2010
With whom did you score and how wild were you getting?
jabani1414Jun 23, 2010
In tears over that game, so proud of our boys, USA USA USA!!!!!
ipecacneatJun 23, 2010
Tears? Seriously? It's a group stage in a soccer tournament.
hmyauhnoJun 23, 2010
Give me your tears gypsy.
blaenkJun 23, 2010
Because it shows how far soccer has come in the USA, where many of the population just blindly thrash it.
ultmastJun 23, 2010
I get teared up when I watch the highlights, having come down from the high. This was a monstrous, emotional win for our COUNTRY, on the biggest stage sport has to offer. I love my country, I love soccer, so why the hell wouldn't this be meaningful enough to be emotional about?
ipecacneatJun 24, 2010
This doesn't mean jack s**t for our country. Outside of soccer fans, nobody really cares in The United States. There have only been a few instances in sport where the moments have transcended the sport itself. Those moments, for America anyway, have been in the Olympics with strong political back stories. Jessie Owens in the Olympics and The 1980 US Olympic hockey team win over The USSR are moments that were more than sport.
Today was a soccer match. It wasn't for a title. It isn't going to blast soccer into the mainstream in America. It isn't going to be remembered outside of soccer enthusiasts.
There was no reason to get emotional after this win. Was it an exciting game? Yes. Does it change anything? No. It was the opening round. Chill out.
You soccer buffs sound like hockey fans after this year's Olympics. Everyone was watching the United States hockey team. Everyone said, "This is going to boost hockey in this country". Look what happened. Everyone forgot a few months later. It didn't change anything, and the hockey team's game/performance was 100 times more exciting and important than this soccer match.
Just as an observation, I've seen more people cry on National Television during this World Cup when the United States has played than I've the figure skating competition in the Olympics. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
