Soccer is such a non contact sport. Ya ya, you get the cool kick to the chest or a good headbutt once in a blue moon, but that is the extent of it. Same with basketball. American Football, Hockey, MMA and Rugby should be a Class A sport, with soccer and basketball being a class B and crap like tennis, luge(sp?), and track and field coming in at Class C. I guess weightlifting could be in its special class, like c-1/2 because otherwise they'd start beating some officials asses. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Just because this one was legit doesn't mean the Spaniards weren't diving like pelicans the rest of the game. Besides, I can't stand the soccer "I'm in agony like I've just been shot" face. I'm sure it hurts, but take it like a man.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Wow a lot of angry folk digging you down. That is a DEFINITE red card. A flying jump kick cleat first straight into the other players chest? He also completeld missed the ball.
I know some of you like the Netherlands and are used to "rough" football but that is nuts. Netherlands got a really lucky break with that play.
People are having ago at the ref, but overall I think he did a good job. Yes that should have been a red card, but the other dutch players and spanish players got yellows when they deserved it (which happened quite a lot).
Except for all the phantom fouls given to Spain, sending a Dutch defender off for having his own foot stepped on, and the corner that Netherlands should have gotten right before Iniesta scored, who looks to be a foot offside.
The "phantom fouls" were almost all actual fouls, usually late tackles in a clumsy and obvious attempt by van Marwijk to bully Spain out of the game. Spain got fewer cards because they fouled less.
Heitinga was sent off for pulling Iniesta back...he didn't pull hard or anything but he committed the foul. His first yellow was a bit harsh but that wasn't what got him sent off, and Holland were lucky to get to half time with any more than 9 men left.
The Dutch should've had a corner from the Schneider free kick but that was several phases of play before Iniesta scored. The Dutch thought they should\ve had a free kick before the goal but they were wrong.
Finally, Iniesta was perfectly in line when the initial cross came in, then when Fabregas finally played him through he was 2 yards ONside.
One announcer previously put it quite well when he said in order to cause a foul usually the other team needs to have possession, and Spain almost always has possession. This game was less - Spain only had 55% or so, which means Netherlands did quite well at stealing the ball, and if you're constantly trying to steal the ball, you're going to get a lot of these small fouls.
After seeing so many take dives and making it look like it hurts, I can't imagine what kind of pain he feels from someone that ACTUALLY physically hit him... damn, poor guy.
Spain played boring football but they did have the best team. They deserved to win but sometimes I wish that the most effective football tactics coincided with the exciting football games. 8(
Still congrats to Spain. They deserved this world cup victory.
If you don't think Iniesta's dive affected the outcome, what about Arjen Robben's second breakaway when Puyol was holding him from behind? If he had taken a dive, Puyol would have been carded and sent off the pitch in regular time, and it would have been Spain down a man.
You know I'm not even Spanish but it's clear as day that even though Spanish players were diving Netherlands was playing VERY aggressively. They should have had a red card in the first 20 minutes due to that flying karate kick.
Sorry pal but Spain played better plain and simple.
I find divers and thugs both to be extremely irritating, so naturally I didn't enjoy watching this game very much. I really do feel Spain was the better team though.
Looks like we've got a bunch of Netherlands fans here. You are a bunch of ignorant fools if you seriously think Spain even remotely close to as bad of floppers as the Dutch.
did he see them lay rolling on the ground and then as soon as they noticed they didn't get a foul immediately jump and run around again. and they did it again and again and again. specially the first half.
Not sure why certain people are getting Dugg down here. Spain were by far the best side, not just tonight, but of the whole tournament. The Netherlands team wouldn't look out of place on a Rugby pitch.
You joking, bro? Rugby players are tougher than s**t. The rugby world cup is next year. I really hope it gets as much attention, on Digg, as the soccer world cup because honestly its a much more entertaining game.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
another f**ktard. go look at the stats. holland averages way more fouls/game than spain for any game in the cup unless you're saying every ref is a moron
uh... he was talking about diving not fouling.
Still I liked Spain's earlier games better, in the final, they did dive way too much, yes the Dutch went in there and played to ugly, but come on... do they have to roll around and milk the tackle... be a man and keep on playing.
I don't recall Spain diving this much in the previous matches. I think they were just taking advantage of the over-aggressiveness of the Dutch and the ref's willingness to call fouls. Its a World Cup final; a smart team grabs every advantage they can.
I think the Netherlands deserves credit for playing their asses off, though. Everywhere the Spaniards kicked the ball (and they kick it around a lot), there was almost always a swarm of orange. They were like f**king Energizer bunnies out there!
You have to feel sorry for any country that loses 3 World Cup Finals without winning.
That said though, their tactics weren't enjoyable to watch, it was like watching Blackburn vs Arsenal at times. Is Big Sam the new Holland manager?
What game were you watching? What I saw was a very physical Dutch side and a Spanish side that seemed to go down with the slightest breeze. Diving isn't enjoyable for me to watch.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
I agree. Both sides played great but it seemed like the Spanish players went down at any given chance. I wish the Ref had been less card happy but it was a great game overall. Congrats Spain!
When the opponents try to knock you the f**k out each time you have the ball, of course you're gonna fall easier, if nothing else, at least out of self-preservation.
No, the Spanish went down to hard tackles by the Dutch. There were one or two easy falls by the Spanish, which Robben eclipsed on his own throughout the course of the game.
The Dutch game plan was to get stuck in and they did. They were fortunate to have their sending off occur as late as it did because it could've occurred much earlier.
I think the Netherlands deserves credit for playing their asses off. Everywhere the Spaniards kicked the ball (and they kick it around a lot), there was almost always a swarm of orange. They were like f**king Energizer bunnies out there!
Holland played (as they did before) horrible football. It's not pleasant to watch, it's dirty as hell and they have too much luck. Even now with the referee, even though he didn't give the corner to Holland which ultimately lead to the goal, they were lucky they didn't end the game with 8 instead of 10. Spain also should 've gotten a penalty and Schneijder didn't even get booked for a very dirty foul.
Spain wasn't that great either, they had some dives (Iniesta mostly, it's not his habit though) and they should have finished more of those big chances. But still, it was a deserved win for their football overall.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
the goal should have been disallowed 4 kicks before it fell for being off-side. the ref and lines men didn't see it, possibly because the ball was intercepted by van persie but it was off-side.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
actually, maybe i should explain it to you. merely being in an offside position won't get the offside call. as you can see in the video, he was onside when the ball was passed to him and he scored. had he touched it in that first pass then it would have been, but in that pass he didn't have anything to do with the play and went back onside before getting the pass.
I wonder why KayRaid's comment is being dugg down? There's absolutely no way that a vocal majority of Dutch (or any losing team in a WORLD game) fans/players would take their loss gracefully.
He's not predicting, he's DECIDING the games.
He chooses who he want to win, then uses his uncanny "Lovecraftian" powers to mess with the minds of the opponents.
I agree. The game started very ugly, mainly because the Dutch played dirty as hell. But the last hour was not bad. Anyway we got the right champion. Would have been a pity if the Dutch would have won.
And what's with all these whiners in the Dutch team after the game ended. Pathetic showing ...
Naw you guys. I was supporting a team, Holland, and I was boozing, and it was good. There were a lot of f**k yous and oohhhs, and aaahhhs and nooooos!!. It was good.
Almost all the yellow cards were earned, the dutch were not playing clean. The spanish ones were deserved as well though. Netherlands were lucky not to get a red in the first half. Overall I think the ref did a reasonably good job.
I think the ref was excellent. He did very well to keep the players in the game. Based on the way the Dutch were playing, they should have had been playing with 8 guys.
The first pass towards Iniesta should have been called offside (during the action that led to the goal). 30 seconds before the referee should have given an obvious free kick. Puyol should have been sent off for his last man shirt tug on Robben. Saying that De Jong should have been sent off early in the game.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
If the Ref had followed the book to the letter the dutch would of been down to 9 men at the end of the first half in all likelyhood, the Ref did his best to make sure that we had a good game. It's not the refs fault that the dutch played dirty from the start of the game to the end 120 minutes later.
that sentence wasn't legible either way. were you saying that if Spain had been carded for diving, they would have lost a man along the way? or that, if the ref had been calling the fouls equally, Spain would have had a red card somewhere? or that, if it had been Spain who was down a man, they would also have played out the game? i legitimately don't understand what you mean.
That's kind of the point about it, the dutch can complain about not getting those corners but that glosses over the fact that Webb had been nice to them the entire match by not sending off people who should of gone.
Incredible match to watch, both sides played fantastic and were pretty balanced.
Yes, maybe that kick to the chest should have been a red, but it would have ruined the game. Another red should have been given when (can't remember who it was, I think Iniesta) pushed one of the Dutch (sorry again for the names, I think Bommel) with bad intentions, but not even a yellow was given. Also when Heitinga fouled Iniesta near the Dutch goal, on the replay it was shown that Iniesta actually stepped on Heitinga.
Of course, let’s not forget the 2 probably biggest game changers, when a penalty probably should have been awarded for Spain in the third minute of extra time and when Netherlands should have been awarded a corner kick right before Spain scored.
As expected the Spanish played their possession game with quick passes between their players, but the Dutch still held them off. It was obvious both teams gave their 110%. Even when the Dutch were 1 player down, they kept on pushing but eventually Spain got through and scored the single goal of the match. Thanks for a wonderful final and congratulations Spain on the win.
this is very true, don't know why you're being buried. There was an overall lack of effort and there won't be a lot of matches I will remember from this world cup. Maybe England - Germany, but that's for the wrong reasons.
"Yes, maybe that kick to the chest should have been a red, but it would have ruined the game"
Then maybe he shouldn't have gone with his leg high up.
Robben and Senijder were forgiven of yellow cards early on. When they were called offside and they kept playing and kicked the ball towards the goal even after they heard the whistle and slowed down. That's a yellow card.
dude, when you're on the field, and somewhere in a huge mix of vuvuzela-sound and screaming, you hear a whistle, you have no idea whether that whistle is the ref's or just some random one in the crowd. IF it's one in the crowd and you stop playing, you're f**ked. When in doubt, of course they keep playing.
He didn't keep on playing. It was obvious that he heard the whistle and stalled and then decided to kick the ball in the net anyway.
The Dutch played dirty and deserved to lose, Heitinga should have been sent off before he held Iniesta back and a couple of other yellows should really have been red cards.
You're forgetting the getaway of Robben that was conviently stoped by Puyol by grabing him and falling with a little spin to give Robben that extra hit to get him out of balance. That should have been called.
I gave it a good try and watched the second half, but I'm sorry, watching soccer is like watching paint dry. There was only one good play the whole second half and that was when the Dutch guy broke free on goal. Soccer ranks right up there with baseball and golf as the most boring sports in the world. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Agree - but the iniesta push you refer to was barely a push. The dutch player just acted as if he was thrown away. It was no red card - the ref was spot on.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
I don't know if it was incredible to watch.. The Dutch relied on lucky breaks throughout their campaign and Spain has perfected the boring, slow style of soccer that eventually forces their opponents to make mistakes. It was a pretty boring final, but the best team on the pitch won. I don't think, however, that the best team of the tournament won.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
I agree with you that the best team of the tournament hasn't won, I still believe that the Germans are the best group and could have beet the Spanish if they had Muller.
@dwalker, have you ever been to any of the countries where soccer is a big deal? I've been to a few of them: The Netherlands, France, Germany, Japan, and Italy... and they ALL have plenty to cheer for. Great food, drink, and lots and lots of pretty girls.
World Cup Soccer winner = the mark of a true World Champion...not like other US sports:
1. NFL Superbowl winner = World Champion. (once a year)
2. MLB World Series WInner = World Champion. (once a year)
3. NBA Finals = World Champion. (once a year)
USA's national sports leagues are sadly indulgent and controlled by the priority of business. Thus the need to crown a champ every year.
Please don't compare the World Cup, or even the Olympics for that matter, in the debate of which is superior compared to your national sports.
1) It's all about defense. And, yes, I find no hitters in baseball boring too.
2) Most scoring seems to occur because of a defensive screw-up, not because of a well executed offensive play.
3) Did I just say "offensive play"? There doesn't seem to be any specific offensive play calling at all. I'm not sure what the coach does during the game other than make substitutions. On the field teammates don't seem to communicate with one-another either. It's like they just make it up as they go along.
4) Unforced errors. I can't think of another sport where there are so many unforced errors. It's like there is only a 75% chance that a pass will actually make it to the intended player. Many, if not most, offensive attempts end not with a shot or a defensive takeaway but due to an unforced error.
5) Too much play acting. Falling down and rolling around hoping to draw a penalty seems to work with the officials, but it's pathetic to watch.
6) The officials have too much impact on the outcome of the game. Just look at the comments here - they're as much about what the officials did/didn't do as they are about the players.
1. What was that quote coined by many NFL analysts: defense wins championships
2. So a QB making a poor read, or a guard whiffing on a steal or a pitcher not having full control of his pitch aren't mistakes
3. www.zonalmarking.net/feed/
4. See #2, sports are full of mistakes and what might have beens. If you can't see that, then watch more sports
5. I watch route runners and QBs in football, basketball players in general, and the occasional hockey player go down if there is even the slightest of contact. This again applies to #4, take off the rosetinted sunglasses when comparing this to other sports
6. All sports have officials with too much impact. NFL is a game of inches right? NBA teams that get more free-throws statistically win more games, NHL teams that get more power plays win more games, MLB pitchers that know the Ump's strike-zone win more games. Rosetinted shades off yet?
1,2,3,4 - you're wrong on those points because most likely you have not played the game (not necessarily professionally). Your "defense" point, as stated, would apply even to chess.
5 - right on. the governing bodies are trying to prevent this by lowering the threshold for yellow cards in such cases but given the nature of the game it is very difficult. the responsibility of playing with honor especially at this kind of events rests with the coaches and national press of the particular teams (they can more easily point out the foolishness of their behavior when they represent their countries)
6 - debatable. human error is part of the game. I'm sure I wouldn't like to see 10 referees in the field or stopping the game for consulting the instant replay.
While that may have been a cheap shot. Self deprecative statements about America not being great don't help either. Show a little pride in your country.
Let's see what Spain has won recently:
FIFA World Cup
FIBA World Championship (Basketball) (And yes USA does play in this)
Rafa Nadal's multiple titles and the 2009 Davis Cup
Tour de France 2009
Nothing to cheer for m i rite?
What a dipstick. You do know that football is the most popular sport on the planet, right? And when we say 'planet' we don't mean just that plot of land between the North Pacific and North Atlantic.
for the next couple of months, Iniesta's got his pick of the hottest women in Spain. hell, at least half the married men in Spain would let him sleep with their wives if asked.
the game actually was off-side 4 kicks ago by then. look back and see where van persie intercepts the ball seconds before the goal. that kick was off-side.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
That is not how off-sides works. He may have been in an off-sides position but he never made a play on the ball hence no off-sides call. When he did make a play on it(the pass to him), he was clearly onside when the ball was kicked to him.
I mean, Iniesta had a good finish. But I generally think of a perfect goal as one where the set up was so great that the defense couldn't do anything about it. Not one where the defense blows the offside trap.
Yeah, you're right, I was just referring to the way in which the goal was made. Right past the defender, *right* past the goalie. I mean, that goalie just allllmost had that ball.
No, no it wasn't. When the ball leaves Torres' foot Iniesta is onside. Barely, but onside. Sure, a tenth of a second later he does appear offside, but that doesn't matter. Pause the video when Torres strikers the ball, draw a parallel line to the 16m one and you'll see it.
That being said, the video you linked is bad because it's zoomed in and you can't really see Torres deliver the pass.
Really disappointed that Spain and Iniesta had to resort to an Italian style game. They have so much talent they don't need to dive. They should have won but not this way. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
I'm talking about Italian style diving. Not the style of play. Spain has a lot of talent and they don't need to dive. You score less goals if you're always on the ground. Look for David Villa or Diego Forlan who are great players as opposed to drama queen Iniesta.
How was it ignorant? He's right. It was a horrible game. It was ugly and had no flow. Nothing to do with the scoreline it was just pure and simple one of the worst games of the tournament. And I love soccer!
Iniesta was so offsides it is unbelievable it wasn't called. I like how the television broadcast waited until he was back onsides to do their little grey box offsides thing.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
They waited to do the grey box thing because that's when it was passed to him. Watch the play again, he would have been offsides had he received the ball that was blocked by the Netherlands player, but when it was passed to him after that he was well onsides.
Thanks for a good World Cup, South Africa! The best footballing team won in the end. Btw, Forlan won the Golden Ball (best player) and Muller the Golden Boot (most goals, decided by number of assists)
its good that Forlan get the Golden Ball since the goals he scored are truly awesome it is not like you are in a congested place and ball just happen to come to your head or to your leg, the goals are awesome and passes are very crucial...
Diego Forlan was absolutely the best player in this World Cup. He was really amazing to watch without diving or flopping. Saw him destroy Liverpool in the Europa League and totally deserved this.
nah, don't f**k spain. It's easy to say they dived a lot, but the dutch did that too, a few times. Only difference is that the ref gave holland a s**tload of yellow cards for the spanish dives.
I'm sorry, but the Dutch have no one to blame but themselves for all those cards... you don't just earn the equivalent of a ginormous yellow card for an entire team sheerly from bad refereeing, it takes 'skill'....
Well, duh. America is only really interested in sports that nobody else is cares about (NFL, Basketball, Baseball - I suppose the Canadians make Ice Hockey an exception); they're guaranteed to win that way.
God damn it I hate Spain. They play some of the most boring and bland soccer ever. They make someone like me, who loves watching the sport, become bored. Also there needs to be SOMETHING done about the flopping. This final blew, was way worse than the 3rd place game.
Its the easiest thing in the world to fix. Video review the yellow cards after the match and suspend the players who dive for a good number of games. Significant fines would also work. Or do both.
Or just put another official on the pitch. That would surely reduce the diving (though it wouldn't eliminate it).
You're an idiot. If you were familiar with Spain over the last two years you would not believe that.
The reason their matches turned out the way they did is because there are few tactics to employ against a team as creative and skilled both on and off the ball as Spain is. One tactic is to stick 10 men behind the ball and hope for a counter-attack, and it is very difficult to score on any team that does that, so you have to spend a lot of the game moving the ball around.
Another tactic is to get stuck in, challenge hard, and hope you don't concede to many fouls. The Spaniards weren't diving or flopping any more than any other team, the only difference was that the Dutch, like other teams before them, were simply committing too many hard challenges.
And despite all that, the Spanish were more than good enough to win. They've lost three times since 2007 and as someone who's watched dozens of their matches, there's absolutely nothing bland about the way they play. To say so is to admit to having amateur knowledge of the sport, at best.
I think you are correct except for the flopping. The Spaniards are sharply divided into divers and non-divers. Busquets and Pedro are the most shameful on the squad, but Ramos, Torres and Iniesta went down easily at times as well. Alonso, Xavi, Fabregas, or Villa, however, you almost always see trying to keep their footing.
I like how you address the tactics a team uses against Spain, but not the Spain tactic itself. Their use of "Possession soccer" goes above and beyond the necessity to hold the ball and plan for an attack. They essentially are playing basketball before the shot clock was invented. Spain just holds onto the ball, which to their credit they are quite good at, and only move forward every so often as to not take a chance. Sure I guess it's "safe", but in all it is a very boring way to play, and completely takes away the chance of some true creativity.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
wow, you just bemoaned the prettiest style of football in the world. spain dominates possession all game and don't attempt to murder players. sure they tend to dive, but you have to protect yourself from players trying to kill you when you keep that much possession.
ps. van bommel is the ultimate douchebag of football. always has been.
If you hate Spain, you have to be in a killing mood for Holland because they were way worse and it's actually because of the way Holland played, pure anti-football Spain wasn't their best tonight.
Like Italy was an better in the last World cup. The 10-0-0 formation, combined with copious amounts of diving and acting lessons, seems to work well in soccer. Why would any team mess with a winning formula?
I'm spanish and I'm agree, but that is because the oponent always hold back trying to avoid them to do his "game". For example, the match between Germany and Spain was nice... because the germans get surprised... The spanish players complains about the same than you, recently Xavi in a interview said so ... "they don't play and don't allow us to do our game"
More than half the team was from FC Barcelona, also all the goals were scored by their players (though they bought Villa right before the tournament - still sweet deal ;)
But really the whole team was wonderful, I'm no fan of Real but Cassillas was amazing as always, Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso played top game too.
They where great when they won the European Championship. Played a great and beautiful football. But in this World Cup: BORING... But not as bad as the last one, by far the worst final, Italy was horrible and France 100% annoying.

So yeah, you're pretty much wrong.

Closed AccountJul 12, 2010
One announcer previously put it quite well when he said in order to cause a foul usually the other team needs to have possession, and Spain almost always has possession. This game was less - Spain only had 55% or so, which means Netherlands did quite well at stealing the ball, and if you're constantly trying to steal the ball, you're going to get a lot of these small fouls.
Great game.

If you don't think Iniesta's dive affected the outcome, what about Arjen Robben's second breakaway when Puyol was holding him from behind? If he had taken a dive, Puyol would have been carded and sent off the pitch in regular time, and it would have been Spain down a man.
mrsteamtankJul 12, 2010

I don't recall Spain diving this much in the previous matches. I think they were just taking advantage of the over-aggressiveness of the Dutch and the ref's willingness to call fouls. Its a World Cup final; a smart team grabs every advantage they can.

The first pass towards Iniesta should have been called offside (during the action that led to the goal). 30 seconds before the referee should have given an obvious free kick.

Robben and Senijder were forgiven of yellow cards early on. When they were called offside and they kept playing and kicked the ball towards the goal even after they heard the whistle and slowed down. That's a yellow card.
And no, that wasn't a penalty.
dutchsaintJul 11, 2010
dude, when you're on the field, and somewhere in a huge mix of vuvuzela-sound and screaming, you hear a whistle, you have no idea whether that whistle is the ref's or just some random one in the crowd. IF it's one in the crowd and you stop playing, you're f**ked. When in doubt, of course they keep playing.
nickkukJul 11, 2010
He didn't keep on playing. It was obvious that he heard the whistle and stalled and then decided to kick the ball in the net anyway.

There was only one good play the whole second half and that was when the Dutch guy broke free on goal. Soccer ranks right up there with baseball and golf as the most boring sports in the world. 90 minutes went by with a 0-0 outcome. This is the single reason why the U.S. will never embrace soccer.

its not that neither team scored
the teams werent making any moves on the goal.
exeprimeJul 12, 2010
The foul that pissed off Iniesta so hard to cause that push also should've been a second yellow for van Bommel.
boltonwanderersJul 12, 2010
I don't know if it was incredible to watch.. The Dutch relied on lucky breaks throughout their campaign and Spain has perfected the boring, slow style of soccer that eventually forces their opponents to make mistakes. It was a pretty boring final, but the best team on the pitch won. I don't think, however, that the best team of the tournament won.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Why I just can't get into European football:
On the positive side, the clock keeps running so there's not much down time or commercials. That's just not enough to win me over.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

0a0563Jul 11, 2010
1,2,3,4 - you're wrong on those points because most likely you have not played the game (not necessarily professionally). Your "defense" point, as stated, would apply even to chess.
5 - right on. the governing bodies are trying to prevent this by lowering the threshold for yellow cards in such cases but given the nature of the game it is very difficult. the responsibility of playing with honor especially at this kind of events rests with the coaches and national press of the particular teams (they can more easily point out the foolishness of their behavior when they represent their countries)
6 - debatable. human error is part of the game. I'm sure I wouldn't like to see 10 referees in the field or stopping the game for consulting the instant replay.
roycinusJul 11, 2010

kruchbaumJul 12, 2010
That is not how off-sides works. He may have been in an off-sides position but he never made a play on the ball hence no off-sides call. When he did make a play on it(the pass to him), he was clearly onside when the ball was kicked to him.

Perfect after they wrongfully red card one of the defenders.
timpoke8Jul 12, 2010
I mean, Iniesta had a good finish. But I generally think of a perfect goal as one where the set up was so great that the defense couldn't do anything about it. Not one where the defense blows the offside trap.
itwasonlyajokeJul 12, 2010

exeprimeJul 12, 2010
No, no it wasn't. When the ball leaves Torres' foot Iniesta is onside. Barely, but onside. Sure, a tenth of a second later he does appear offside, but that doesn't matter. Pause the video when Torres strikers the ball, draw a parallel line to the 16m one and you'll see it.
That being said, the video you linked is bad because it's zoomed in and you can't really see Torres deliver the pass.

oblique63Jul 11, 2010
personally, I enjoyed watching their interesting passing technique throughout the entire tournament... but to each their own I guess
anothrnbdyJul 11, 2010
Its the easiest thing in the world to fix. Video review the yellow cards after the match and suspend the players who dive for a good number of games. Significant fines would also work. Or do both.
Or just put another official on the pitch. That would surely reduce the diving (though it wouldn't eliminate it).
analjusticeJul 11, 2010
it was bland because of spain? f**k you mammoth man and the mother you rode in on
Closed AccountJul 11, 2010
To say so is to admit to having amateur knowledge of the sport, at best.
clyentnineJul 12, 2010
I think you are correct except for the flopping. The Spaniards are sharply divided into divers and non-divers. Busquets and Pedro are the most shameful on the squad, but Ramos, Torres and Iniesta went down easily at times as well. Alonso, Xavi, Fabregas, or Villa, however, you almost always see trying to keep their footing.

ironlungJul 12, 2010
superkeer I couldn't have said it better
mammothman34Jul 12, 2010
I like how you address the tactics a team uses against Spain, but not the Spain tactic itself. Their use of "Possession soccer" goes above and beyond the necessity to hold the ball and plan for an attack. They essentially are playing basketball before the shot clock was invented. Spain just holds onto the ball, which to their credit they are quite good at, and only move forward every so often as to not take a chance. Sure I guess it's "safe", but in all it is a very boring way to play, and completely takes away the chance of some true creativity.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

wow, you just bemoaned the prettiest style of football in the world. spain dominates possession all game and don't attempt to murder players. sure they tend to dive, but you have to protect yourself from players trying to kill you when you keep that much possession.
ps. van bommel is the ultimate douchebag of football. always has been.
crazymaniaccJul 12, 2010
If you hate Spain, you have to be in a killing mood for Holland because they were way worse and it's actually because of the way Holland played, pure anti-football Spain wasn't their best tonight.
keggluneqJul 12, 2010
Like Italy was an better in the last World cup. The 10-0-0 formation, combined with copious amounts of diving and acting lessons, seems to work well in soccer. Why would any team mess with a winning formula?

I'm spanish and I'm agree, but that is because the oponent always hold back trying to avoid them to do his "game". For example, the match between Germany and Spain was nice... because the germans get surprised... The spanish players complains about the same than you, recently Xavi in a interview said so ... "they don't play and don't allow us to do our game"

The game becomes boring, but and somebody already said here... there is no other way to play aganist Spain.

2006 WC > 2010 WC
2010 Final >>>>> 2006 Final (but also boring)
