http://sports.espn.go.com/rpm/racing/nhra/news/story?id=5372090 video is on that page.
I show it because he ends up being killed by the safety nets. Seems the design of the nets needs to be reconsidered.
davidtcJul 12, 2010
Seems the design of the frames they are using need to be reconsidered if a net can fold it over. I know it isn't your average net, but still, sounds very strange. Look at the track staff person at the end of the track/start of the sand trap. He doesn't even act like anything is wrong, probably cause of the low speed the car was going at when it went through.
Net problem? Sounds more like a bad frame that was going to snap at any time, or it might have already snapped from the forces of the race. They said he hand builds his cars, might have built this one wrong.
Still sucks. RIP.
bossm4nJul 12, 2010
I agree, but it's also fairly obvious that the track needs a longer sand trap. Which would do away with the need for the nets completely.

Net issue should be addressed ASAP

I kid you not, I was watching a compilation of NHRA crashes on YouTube (and deaths of course) when this event happened. Believe me, I'm pretty creeped out O_oComment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Even worse than nascar "racer" is a guy who can't drive straight.
dvsbastardJul 12, 2010
Yeah, it is easy to drive in a straight line.... Until you're being propelled by an 8,000 horsepower engine...
blankchequeJul 12, 2010
Maybe we should strap you in to one. Assuming you don't piss yourself in the pits first from hearing the hammer of god strike the earth. And then, once you're strapped in, and you can calm your nerves down enough to hold the wheel in place, would you have the balls to touch the gas pedal? I think not.
When you feel the G-forces distort your face and nose, forcing your eye lids to open, and producing the same amount of thrust it takes for a rocket to break the earths atmosphere.I don't think you'd be able to do a single f**king thing but sit there and cry. Doing the 1/4 mile in 4.3 seconds and traveling 300mph.
Then let's see how "funny" it is that he "can't drive straight".
crytekemployee3Jul 12, 2010
ok. But he still can't drive straight.

You seem to have mastered the fine art of c**k gobbling though.

RIP Mark,
It is a dangerous sport, at those speeds one little mistake and you are a gonner!!
vibr8Jul 12, 2010
yeah, he must have been doing almost 20mph!
omgwtflawlJul 12, 2010
Looking at the video, I guess it would have been better if he intentionally crashed himself into the wall.
brak710101Jul 12, 2010
I think he assumed the net would have been a better option, I would have.
I think they need sand pits with a runaway-truck type incline at the end instead.
hu99Jul 12, 2010
NHRA? What the f**k is that? Is that even a sport?
hu99Jul 12, 2010
What a stupid f**king "sport".

...from the science illiterate dominating digg these days...
he was going far faster than the video would imply >50 mph...
dragsters are not designed to withstand collisions, they are designed to be fast. Engineers would have to add significant weight (or get very expensive with composites) in order to make dragsters handle front impacts.
The netting system was the real failure here...they are supposed to break way and slowly stop the car...that didn't happen in this case.
vibr8Jul 13, 2010
I could have hit the net at that speed on a skateboard and been fine - the c**kpit of any race car exists to protect the driver.
This is an engineering failure, pure and simple.
menschmaschineJul 12, 2010
What a real shame. My family is going to Sonoma, CA this week for the races. I always hate to hear about deaths in this sport, but it really shows that s**t still happens. Best wishes to his loved ones and R.I.P.
hitnflyJul 12, 2010
