Should have been a straight red. Thank God the Netherlands didn't win after their thuggery.

skyjis6Jul 12, 2010
I'm on the fence about "thuggery" but two of my favorite words are Banditry and Brigandry.
dusanmalJul 12, 2010
I am not Dutch or Spanish but for independent and fair view one must see situation as seen from wide angle. Dutch player is near the ball and clearly going for it with his leg, facing in the process from opposite way to perpendicular to the Spanish guy arriving.. Spanish guy is 4-5 times further away from the ball and is running at full tilt into the Dutch guy FACING him and clearly seeing Dutch guy going for the ball with his leg. Eventually and intentionally running into him. He could have stopped. If viewed from another angle and just fraction of the second before collision it looks as bad red card assault by the Dutch. Knowing couple of second long action leading to it - it is stupid risk by Spanish guy at least if not his violation of the Dutch.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
f3n1xJul 12, 2010
yeah, I can see through my ear, too.
damhnaJul 12, 2010
And at which angle is it not a reckless and dangerous high challenge ? Pillock.
kattapogaJul 12, 2010
Bull. Anyway you slice it - thats a high studs up red card reckless challenge.
And if you notice xavi gets there in plenty of time to head the ball away before he gets stomped in the chest.
fxu1989Jul 12, 2010
What the f**k are you watching?
The Spaniard is clearly looking at the ball at all times, and the Dutch is looking forward. Also, there's absolutely no reason for him to have his leg high up. Even if it didn't hit him, it's a situation bound to be a foul/card.
Closed AccountJul 12, 2010
You're taught from a young age to never, ever, ever go for the ball like that. You obviously know nothing of what you're talking about.
It should have been a straight red. Period. End of discussion.

the Netherlands played dirty today, but Spain was flopping too. at least four of those yellow cards against the Dutch were unwarranted. including the one where David Villa went down and the ref didn't see it, but awarded a yellow after Villa stayed down on the turf and the bench complained.
on Robben's second breakaway, i believe Puyol would definitely have gotten his second yellow (and been ejected from the match) if Robben had just flopped to the ground instead of trying to press on for the goal. i appreciated the ref trying to keep things from escalating in an ugly match, but when you double the World Cup final record for cards, something's very wrong.
the best soccer was played in the last 15 minutes of regular time and the first extra time, when no yellows were given (except one to Robben for running his mouth at the ref), despite just as many situations in which they could have been justified.
sweetnguiltyJul 12, 2010
Villa went down because the other guy slided on his shinbone. That guy got a yellow card because even though the ref didn't see it, one of his assistents saw it. If the ref trusts his assistents he will give the yellow card even though he didn't see the foul himself.
raffyohJul 12, 2010
Flopfest 2010...
gunforhireukJul 12, 2010
Iniesta should've had a red, for diving, then for jumping straight back up from his play acting agony to retaliate whilst the ref wasn't looking. The Dutch got screwed by quite a few calls.
m3nt0r89Jul 12, 2010
Guys don't even start. Right from kickoff the Dutch had at least 6 hard fouls before spain finally retaliated. Spain's first foul got the first yellow card of the game. Nothing for the dutch until later. Van bommel and De Jong did nothing but kick trip pull tackle and more.
Dirtiest team I've ever seen, they should have been down to 9 players by the end of the first half. I'm glad the dutch lost their 3rd final because that was beyond absurd. If spain flopped, they did good. Get the bullies where it hurts if they're not willing to play the right way. A few fouls you'll always get, but a game based on intentinoally BOOTING players in the chest with your cleats, going for the knees of a player who just came back from knee problems (iniesta), and more. That's beyond dirty.
anakastJul 12, 2010
They ended up getting a red for no reason in overtime anyway.
spacemanspiff22Jul 12, 2010
Uhh...the spanish player was clearly pulled down by his shoulder by the dutch guy with no attempt whatsoever to even look at the ball. Care to explain how that's not a yellow card?
Closed AccountJul 12, 2010
It didnt look to me like he pulled him down, just that he touched his shoulder and Iniesta (I think) just fell.
Closed AccountJul 12, 2010
Vegas cleaned up though. Bet on Spain to win, but not go to overtime.
He definitely should have gotten a red. That was 100% intentional. The kick was going forward, instead of up which would have been an attempt kick the ball.
That's not to say they didn't get a couple of yellows due to flops though. Spain would collapse if they so much as got brushed up against. But considering the Red the Dutch should have gotten early on, they got lucky as hell.

And van Bommel should've been sent off also for the tackle before the Iniesta push, and Spain should've gotten that one penalty and so forth
m3nt0r89Jul 12, 2010
seriously sore losing dutch fans. The dutch should have been down to 9 players by the end of the first half. Initesta had that 'mean spirited push' because van Bommel did nothing but kick kick trip kick push kick pull tackle. Clear favoritism in holland's favor from the ref.
Oh well, we win :)

hu99Jul 12, 2010
The Dutch dug their own grave today. They had no response for Spain's game plan and resorted to dirty tactics. They abandoned the exciting play that got them to the final and were lucky not to have anybody sent off earlier than they did.
However, Iniesta's two obvious dives prior to his goal lessen his achievement. This was not a great World Cup final and both teams should not be proud of their play.

But that kick should have been a RED!

kattapogaJul 12, 2010
the ref was pretty good I thought - the players were out to give him a rough time though
swooglesJul 12, 2010
This.
I was impressed by the ref on a ton of occasions today. The slow-motion replays matched up with a lot of extremely tough calls. Spain just managed to throw so much acting at him that he couldn't ignore it all.
gunforhireukJul 12, 2010
The ref was terrible - awarding Spain a goal kick in the dying minutes when the Dutch should've been a corner, letting Iniesta off with relentless diving (and missing his retaliation against one of the Dutch players late in the day). He was right on the Spanish goal, although it was that poor call giving them the goal kick that led to the goal in the first place.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
skyplatoonJul 12, 2010
I agree that should have been a red but the ref was spot on for most of the game. I was quite impressed with him given that he was refereeing a street fighter tournament.
martinvivesJul 12, 2010
Spain started the game clearly overplaying Netherlands (watch the first 20 minutes of the match).
Then the dutch realized the only way to stand a chance was going guerrilla.
This was a clear red and the ref didnt show it because the final would have ended there. The dutch instead of being thankful kept their kick parade as long as they could. Until they ended up full of (deserved) yellows.
Then Spain had a bit more freedom and the game got a bit better, but the match had already been broken.
If Holland had won many would have praised their "tactics", after all, italy has won several WC playing like that. But guess what, they lost. And the image they have given is, IMO, deserving more of a 5th place than a 2nd.
They won a kilo of silver medals, but they lost a ton of respect.
