Man, I am so happy to see soccer gettin some serious love from the all parts of the US, and especially from a former prez.
For those haven't there is a great video of the reaction from sports bars around the US right after Donovan scores the winner. always puts a smile on my face.

Too many people underestimate the popularity of soccer in the U.S. It's really popular in the suburbs, and it increases every year. We just have many sports in the U.S., and MLS lacks a lot of the better players and everyone knows it. Soccer just isn't a top tier sport in the U.S. but I bet we have almost as many soccer fans in the U.S. as countries like England and Germany. After hosting the 1994 World Cup, U.S. interest in the game has been increasing steadily, usually spiking during the World Cup.
Hopefully we get the 2018 bid for the World Cup because soccer is certainly nearing the point of being ready to go mainstream in the U.S. and I think that would be an excellent catalyst.

Unfortunately it seems that this love only comes every 4 years with the WC. Champions league final, Gold cup, Copa America, Euro cup..etc.. none of them even register in the radar in terms of enthusiasm compared to the WC.
I really think it only has to do with national pride and the "glamor" associated of competing with nations around the world than with pure love of the sport.
