In other words, it costs less to build this lab than it costs to run the war in Afghanistan in a month.
berkanaJun 30, 2011
($6.7 billion per month was the last figure published, which was for February. Correct me if there is an accurate average available.)
woollymittensJun 30, 2011
Funny how they pissed away a trillion on Wall Street and can't be bothered to further humanity for a thousandth of that.

I agree, it's funny, when a billionaire is asked for money for causes, it's called philanthropy. When the government asks for it for advancement of the country, it's called tyranny.....
wjappeJun 30, 2011
The government usually doesn't ask when it decides it wants to do something
godsbongJun 30, 2011
Sorry, but America needs more tax cuts for the richest 1% of its population.

What's another billion or so for another hole in the ground?
vanzant38Jun 30, 2011
After a little government conversion math the number will probably be over $5B.
dustman96Jun 30, 2011
Chump change...

Why the F is this story continuing to appear? It's come up in the feed now for at least the third or fourth time!

I think the Europeans should respond with an absolutely vital *undersea* physics lab.
StonnaJun 30, 2011
I want it!

How come these jokers always get more money than NASA gets to send a lander to Europa or Enceladus?....You know...the moons covered in water ice and with liquid oceans below?
Far more fascinating discoveries to be made than particle theory.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
woollymittensJun 30, 2011
Who are you to say what potential discovery is going to be more important? Particle physics may yield a viable way to have nuclear fusion reactors. This may make it trivially easy to get to your ball of ice.
davidg11Jun 30, 2011
Life on other planetary bodies is more important of a discovery than figuring out what "dark matter" is.
Any day of the week.

Let me guess, $600 million of which will be wasted on unnecessary, redundant and obsolete expenses.
barackalypseJun 30, 2011
$1.2 billion? No problem, we'll just auction more treasury notes! Now if we can just find some suckers to buy them...
"A third U.S. Treasury note auction on Wednesday rounded out a rough week for U.S. government debt sales as a recent rise in yields failed to attract significant bidding interest."

And 2 billion for a dark matter trap. Boy. Seems we have a TON of money....for certain things...
NY state took 1 million AWAY from my kid's school's budget this year. A school that was already suffering financially.
America. yay.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
particleman420Jun 30, 2011
you do realize that states have different budgets than the country? no? well now you do.
