Hope they get this technology perfected in time.
anomaly100Jan 30, 2011
Right now I just happen to be watching something about this now on TV. I hope they can stop such an event. We could have a common denominator with dinosaurs: extinction.
rhawk187Jan 30, 2011
Except the dinosaurs didn't have space program, so they had an excuse.
anomaly100Jan 30, 2011
Well you don't watch cartoons then!
norman619Jan 30, 2011
The dinosaurs weren't wiped out. They evolved. How do people think we got birds?
toxicwaffleJan 30, 2011
They were created by god. Duuhhh.

Except that the probability that global warming is happening in our lifetime can be approximated to 1, and the probability of such a massive asteroid impact in our lifetime can be approximated to 0. Way to go to get people distracted, and money diverted!
ferretmanJan 30, 2011
Well now, one would wipe out pretty much all life on the planet and one--well, wouldn't do much besides get us back to the Medieval Warm Period.
So yeah, this is pretty danged important.
pietrosJan 30, 2011
>and one--well, wouldn't do much besides get us back to the Medieval Warm Period.
You wish! It really depends on how many degrees, but it is pretty easy that the global warming escalate to the point of taking away all of civilization.
You see the problem is that over a certain point global warming triggers events (like the release of the methane that is stored inside the poles, and the burning of the amazon forest, with all that that entails) that really push the global warming up another notch, and another notch.
May I suggest the book (made ONLY by reviewing peer reviewed science) "6 degrees that could change the world". There is also a video version from national geographic available on p2p networks (torrent).
We are risking something which is beyond what most people realize. The only think that is close was the Permian–Triassic extinction event (check it on wikipedia), when nearly all of multicellular life died out. That was way before humanity ever evolved.

I have an idea... Instead of wasting billions of dollars on a giant 'Asteroids' game how bout Nasa actually spend those billions for a space ship that's half way respectable!...

and make Mars a theme-park!
of cause the kind where we can stay if earth goes into the toilet

Someone should thank the Asteroid - it's only manners.
ferretmanJan 30, 2011
We *definitely* gotta get out there!
norman619Jan 30, 2011
So you think global warming is a big problem? What could happen if the sun stopped working?
1ny0urfac3Jan 30, 2011
We should focus more on our environment than the very unlikely chance of the earth being hit by an asteroid.
ParentingCoachLisaJan 31, 2011
Really? I don't think so.
rickthebrickJan 31, 2011
Suppose the world determined that one was going to hit the Earth and that NASA diverted it away from its path toward Earth. Does anyone think that it would change anyone attitude toward the United States. Most would probably deny that it happened.
friday1970Feb 4, 2011
Well, if we are going to develop a spaceship that can beam into asteroids, we had better develop a hyperspace button for the controls first.
