Good one!
tyger11Dec 30, 2010
Wow, someone is paying researchers to figure out something that's been known for a long time? Geez.
psdabfmDec 30, 2010
That's your tax dollars (a.k.a. stimulus spending) at work!
ultrasparcDec 31, 2010
I thought that was going into jelly fish mating habit research?

Awesome, a scientist discovered thermodynamics

I keep meticulous records of the money I spend on my car, and gasoline comes in at less than 6% of the total cost. People are so obsessed with this "green" BS they overlook that technologies, such as the ones discussed in the article, increase fuel economy by a tiny fraction and add hundreds (thousands?) to the sale price of a car. So fuel cost/consumption goes down by a tiny margin but the overall cost of a vehicle goes way up!
I am all for technological advancement, but completely turning a blind eye to economics in the name of being "green" is going to land us all in the poor house!

most people buy used cars, unlike yourself
psdabfmJan 4, 2011
I'm completely lost on the point you are attempting to make with your post. FYI, the car I discussed in my post above is pre-owned.

you're lost because you're spoiled by wealth, thus out of touch with the reality of most people
psdabfmJan 4, 2011
I understand now, you're a complete idiot who was nothing of value to contribute to this subject. Spoiled by wealth? Pull your head out of your ass. If I was "spoiled by wealth" I imagine I would have purchased a new car.
If you have a legitimate point about the subject article, or my original post, I welcome it.

see, out of touch
how's that trust fund these days?
psdabfmJan 4, 2011
I'm afraid I'm unaware of the trust fund you are refering to. Since you seem to be so well educated, maybe you could enlighten me.

Big Oil: Researchers have been paid millions to stop their research and quietly go away.

It's called a turbocharger. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turbocharger
ljseinfeldDec 31, 2010
Um, well, no. A turbo has nothing to do with reclaiming heat energy if you'd already known how a turbo works, or even bothered to read the article you referenced you'd know that.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
OrlandoAlexDec 30, 2010
I'm all for technology that makes use of what's clearly wasted energy -- so much heat that not only is let go, but actively vented from the car, when it could be helping out. The idea of tapping into the heat of a car to reduce energy use has been around as long as cars have used heater cores instead of electric heaters.
Just like with hybrid and pure-electric technology, it's not going to pay off very quickly for early adopters, but will in the long-run as the cost of producing the parts comes down. It's promising, and worthy of praise, not scorn.

That would be great.

If the research can go into retro-fitting existing vehicles with heat-charged alternators, it will pay off even more (environmentally) than putting the technology into new cars.
nogodsorkingsDec 31, 2010
Given that automakers haven't already acted to implement such systems in all of their products, I would guess that the marginal benefit of the tech is overwhelmed by the cost increase, especially in a market in which fuel economy is a major basis for competition. For most customers, a few more mpg is not going to be worth the thousand dollars or so needed to implement the tech.
But that's why we have the government to fund this kind of research - privately funded research has the unfortunate tendency to be constrained by such trivialities as "cost-benefit analysis" and "customer demand".
nogodsorkingsDec 31, 2010
I reread the end of the article, and it looks like this is what's happening. Automakers already studied the tech, but aren't putting it everywhere because it's ludicrously expensive at present, and is only viable on small sections of the car.
I would be unsurprised to see legislation passed 'fixing' this issue and mandating the application of the system throughout the vehicle, even when it is unprofitable.
thelegaceDec 31, 2010
I agree that private research will probably help yield positive green technologies, but without applying the cost-benefit analysis it wouldn't be much of a solution would it. We have plenty of solutions, they just don't have enough cost-benefit. I think more of the problem is the risk analysis that these business execs look at. They really have no practical idea how a new technology could be implemented in a cost effective way.

Straight kid next door type Tucker get's his cherry popped by another dude! Straight: Tucker Bradley
Bait: Seth Roberts http://3.DudePornstars.com Try-Sexual Robbins was cruising the parks for more straight dick when he came across Tucker, the next door kid type, just naturally sexy and cute. Tucker was suspicious of the camera and would talk until Robins explained who he was and what he was looking for - basically a dude who would f**k on camera for a couple hundred bucks. Tucker was up for the challenge and showed up at the studio an hour later for his first porn shoot. He was introduced to Seth, one of our popular and bait hotties, as the dude he was going to double team a hot (non-existent) porn girl, 'Holly'. Both dudes work up some impressive wood, only to find out that 'Holly' called in sick. What to do? Let's pay Tucker double the money to have oral sex with a dude. Tucker balks, 'I don't do dudes', all that s**t, but Caruso doesn't pay attention. He just tells Set to put his head near Tucker's dick and we'll 'see if you like it'. Before you know it, the deed is done and Tucker is so horny by now that he's not pulling away from a hot, wet bj. When Caruso tells Tucker it's his turn, the guy is confused and Caruso has to explain that the 'oral' action has to go both ways. It's just a matter of trying, kind of 'Try-Sexual'. It doesn't go so well at first, but once the guys convince Tucker to just let go and suck like he like a girl to suck him, it was like turning the switch on and Tucker went to town on Seth's thick, pretty c**k. Next was f**king, Tucker just said 'should I do him like a chick?' Now how f**king hot is that? You can see the anticipation in Seth's eyes waiting to f**ked by a straight guy like he'd f**k his girlfriend. Caruso let's him f**k Seth until he just about ready to cum and then turns the tables once again. 'f**king', you got to top, now you have to bottom. It was painful at first, but eventually Seth took that straight dudes cherry and f**ked the cum right out of him! Don't miss the 'After the Shoot' interview to see Tucker's reaction to this and just what he's going to tell his girlfriend about his try-sexual experience.
