Dumb ass Writer and s**tty Study.
A. 22mg/kg/day is over 20x the dose given to a severely depressed adult; these mice are so saturated with SSRI it's a wonder their still functioning at all.
B. Are you f**king serious health writer? SSRI release serotonin? Why the f**k did you present this as good study and accurate when you don't even know what the hell you're talking about.
She deserves to get fired; this retarded article is going to convince depressed people to stop taking their antidepressants.

To Whom it may concern,
SSRI's do not release serotonin; they prevent it from being retaken up in the synapse allowing increasing synaptic concentration of serotonin in the CNS. Furthermore this nonclinical study saturated these mice with approximately 20x the normal SSRI dose; these mice have brains so swamped in prozac, it's going to be binding to so many other reuptake pumps in the CNS, dopamine, acetycholine etc and drastically cause an imbalance in these mice's neuronal chemistry; of course this mice are going to have chronic problems. Presenting this inaccurate information and poor study, which appeals to people with depression - who don't want to be on such medication to begin, has the potential to convince them to abruptly stop their regime and have adverse reactions and relapse. Presenting this information in such a way is not only unethical but incompetent. Good luck finding a new science writer.

Yup, I was going to make the same correction. Prozac is an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) and, as such, simply slows down the brain's absorption of serotonin; it doesn't release the neurotransmitter into the brain on its own.

It is my understanding that they can't just administer serotonin because it is unable to pass through the blood-brain barrier. It is pretty cool that they developed a way to overcome this problem.

actually, the 8 amino acid precursors to the various neurotransmitters do by pass the blood brain barrier... they are delivered to the brain via high affinity transport system in the same proportions as they are in plasma. its only used for this purpose.

Why is the state of scientific news reporting so utterly s**tty? It's like, if writers on other subjects made as many mistakes as science writers, they'd get their asses s**t-canned right away, but I guess they go on the (correct) assumption that most people are too f**king stupid to notice how poorly written most science articles are.

22mg/Kg/day is a ridiculous dose. The normal starting dose for people is 10-20 mg. 22mg/Kg would be like a person taking over a 1000 mg a day, which never happens.
