Lot's more info on the next generation NASA space ship, Orion: http://www.nasa.gov/exploration/systems/mpcv/index.html Just as an FYI, people talk about MPCV being based on the Orion capsule, its is more than "based on", it is exactly the same.
garrywJul 5, 2011
I agree with that and I work for LM on the Orion
jameswjroseJul 5, 2011
If you work at NASA or one of the many companies that support NASA and it's efforts, I thank you.

no need to thank me, I get a paycheck.

in other news, China has offered to buy NASA.

Excellent work done by NASA day by day...

yes! NASA still a long way to go for the world...

How about let's work on some real goals, like sending human explorers/colonists to Mars instead of just making them travel a year+ for a 21 day mission?
Also, why is NASA working on a quieter plane? Are people complaining about plane noise way up in the sky? Even if they are, why aren't the commercial plane manufacturers tackling this problem? I want NASA to focus on space exploration (WITH HUMANS), not designing quieter planes or another space pen.
Sadly, without a flagship mission that will awe and inspire kids to be future rocket scientists and astronauts, NASA is basically sitting on its butt and twiddling its fingers looking for things to do.
casf1bJul 5, 2011
Is this a joke? NASA is toast now. Just like our manned space program.
"Space experts say the best and brightest often head for the doors when rocket lines get marked for extinction, dampening morale and creating hidden threats. They call it the “Team B” effect." http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/04/science/space/04nasa.html?_r=1&hpw

NASA for the win.

I thought they were busy with Muslim outreach now?
President Obama told NASA administrator Charles Bolden that his highest priority should be "to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science ... and math and engineering."Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Muslim outreach, thats whats next.

I heard NASA is constructing a superweapon of some kind near the MAW installation.

NASA, please find us an alternative fuel source....
and please hurry
abraxas82Jul 5, 2011
Seems like NASA is making the best with what they have. It's a shame there is so much international turmoil, I wish people and governments around the world would realize how medieval all these conflicts are. But I suppose it's part of human nature.
Imagine how much we could accomplish in our own countries and in space exploration if as much resources and effort that is used for war was put to better use!
You may say that I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one...

nasa's next venture should always be what others think is impossible. for a long time it was about hardware and access to space. its not now. i think nasa should be about propulsion systems and spacecraft built for space to provide living quarters and facilities for scientists. we don't need to turn astrophysicists into welders anymore. we can have welders do welding.
now nasa should pay to have their equipment put in space by commercial space ventures like spacex and scaled composites... they need the business. that doesn't mean they don't need spacecraft like orion.
i love nasa they do the impossible.

Do you think affirmative action hurt NASA? I think the Russian could hire the best qualified and I think that maybe NASA had to deal with affirmative action.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
starmanjonesJul 5, 2011
thats an ill informed statement. it presupposes that affirmative action is about giving less talented people jobs. its about giving often more talented but less experienced people jobs that prejudice would exclude them from getting.
the way nasa does the impossible is by creating systems of management that can take a goal that requires new technology of all sorts and finds the way using the flawed talents that are inherent to human beings to get there. there have been dramatic lessons that helped shape this technology to manage imperfect humans to do the impossible. so its been expensive.
armstrong and aldrin landed on the moon because the two of them had procedures and checklists that eliminated as many human errors as possible. if they had depended on the computers to land eagle it would likely have failed. they took over and landed it. they were running low on fuel.
but if you think that they would have aborted the landing at that predetermined abort limit... if armstrong thought he was going to get it down then you are wrong. aldrin would have been right with him because he had confidence in what they had done to get there. he knew what armstrong would do.
i am a fan of the russian space program. but... this has been their achilles heal. they assume the pilot was flawed. they depended on automated systems. they were very concerned about loosing cosmonauts... they understood that their automated systems weren't up to the task. they had less experience with pilot centered control of missions. that is why they didn't get to the moon first.
your assumptions are non sequitur. nasa has the only example of this culture and technology of accomplishing the impossible. if we allow it to become mediocre then we've screwed up big.
nasa is about the best in the human species... as a whole... not about the failings of any single human in the system.
quickgold192Jul 5, 2011
Man, blast from the past; I haven't heard anyone grumble about affirmative action since 2006. I honestly forgot all about it, like the Atkins Diet and Yomega yo yos.
