Nasa's take on making sure the electric grid survives a big solar flare disruption: "turn off the power grid until danger has passed".

But even just turning off the grid may not be enough to protect the system from damage. Think EMP.

It's a certainty that this will happen again, although the question of "when" is obviously impossible to answer. Given how dependent we all are on our technology in this day and age though, it is frightening to think of how people would react to a natural event like this.

the world needs a clean slate, although even something of this magnitude wouldn't erase everything, debts will still be owed. for the poorer nations, they'll hardly be affected except maybe in the aid they get. and it's not like it will affect everyone everywhere that can be affected. the duration and which side the earth is facing will be a deciding factor in what gets affected.
maybe, just maybe, without their internet, or cellphones, or tv or other things, people will have to talk to each other to fill the time. and they might have plenty of it if they can't go to work. but these things will be fixed quickly (or prevented), within hours or days at most since all corporations will see is millions and billions in lost revenue.

When it happens again and knocks out the electrical grid, including pumps that cool nuclear reactors, we will regret not being more prepared.
