That sounds about right. Left...er... you know....
darkwater37Dec 19, 2011
I don't like either side, I think both views are wrong.
alanocuDec 19, 2011
I pretty much agree with that. It almost comes down to voting for who sucks the less. I don't vote for Democrats because of their epic sucking.
anub1sDec 19, 2011
Right.... You're a moderate, who always votes Republican, constantly demonizes the left, and always has right-WING (meaning far right) things to say. Yeah, you're sure a moderate.

""Generally people who tend to be moderate can go from one side to another, but I don't know of any extreme left-winger that became a right-winger," said Marco Iacoboni, professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral science at the University of California Los Angeles. "
But I know plenty of rabid right wingers that have become moderate or even lefties (That would be me).
I think that comes with realizing we are all one.

I think some of it has to do with the kind of education you have as well. Meaning, if you go into something like Accounting, Financial Management, or Business Management, you're more likely to come out on the side of the right, but then again, many of the people that enter such programs were that way to begin with. Hard sciences like Physics, Biology, Chemistry, often come out aligned with the left, or at least moderate, due to the emphasis they place on collective learning, study, and review.
I think the people who are truly at the head of the game are the psychiatrists and nueral science majors. People who understand why others believe what they do. That's a science that fascinates me, but not near enough to study in detail.
My mom often blames my moderate stance (I stand about center in any analysis I ever take, and I consider myself well centered) to be a result of "the liberal education system", where when I graduated high school I was a staunch right winger, my highschool was far from liberal leaning (Utah School Systems are quite reserved on certain subjects, not so much on others). I loved Ayn Rand philosophy; I took it upon myself to study after highschool and after having to drop out of college for a while. it was then that I realized how stupid a lot of my feelings were on things. Funny how things change.
vitriolandangstDec 19, 2011
I dabbled with Conservative when I was around 20 -- probably as a rebellion against people at art school.
But then my brain grew and someone set me straight about how "manipulated" the system is - and I became more Liberal.
maximillionteeDec 19, 2011
I can totally relate to that. The reason I'm moderate to liberal is because I have an education. When I was young and ignorant, conservative viewpoints made much more sense. Learn a thing or two about the system, philosophy, and the world; see things from a larger perspective, identify with a more liberal perspective.
When everything isn't so exotic and scary, it's much easier to be logical about any given issue. The same holds true about my perspective on religion. I'm an atheist because I was raised christian, read the bible, the koran, teachings of the Dali Llama. See religion from a greater, worldly, and educated perspective; and see all of the things wrong with it, and even the things good about it.
floepieDec 19, 2011
Yeah, what makes us human is our ability to "socialize" as mentioned in the article - the ability to see that we are part of something greater than ourselves - something that, when healthy, provides stability and well-being for the individuals of that greater whole.
ShovelbabyDec 19, 2011
They didn't look very far or didn't want to see. There are tons of left to right conversions, famous and otherwise. Here are just a few:
Ronald Reagan
Dennis Miller
David Horowitz
David Mamet
Rudy Giuliani
William Bennett
Roger L. Simon
Andrew Breitbart
Linda Chavez
Eldridge Cleaver
Ari Fleischer
Bernard Goldberg
Michael Medved
Dick Morris
Condaleeza Rice
J.C. Watts
drmangrumDec 19, 2011
And there's Mitt Romney (although I think he's still pretty liberal) and Rick Perry.
frumblerDec 19, 2011
They where never true lefties to begin with, just self serving people trying to get as much as they can for nothing, went right when it suited them.
Breitbart being a perfect example.
And I'll admit their are a few so called lefties making OWS look bad as we speak.
floepieDec 19, 2011
Is that why the blue states tend to be the wealthier states? I thought it was common knowledge that the blue states subsidize the red states. And generally, the red states fully oblige this scheme.
The dems seem to be made up of either very hard working lower middle class folks who may make close to minimum wage and work long hours to make ends meet. That, and higher educated people, the higher middle class, which tend to view groups of people in society as the functioning unit rather than placing such a high importance on individuals. When society functions well, an individual's well being naturally follows.
I'm a true lefty (hard left), and I think we need to work very hard in order to restore a fully functioning society and hope to instill a strong work ethic in my children.
But, you can go ahead and let a few rotten apples spoil it for the whole bunch.
frumblerDec 20, 2011
And I'm guessing as a true hard American lefty, you have no desire to redistribute wealth so everyone has the exact amount no matter how hard they work.
Why does the right continue to push this lie?

FTA: Conservatives, on the other hand, have demonstrated more activity in the amygdala, known as the brain's "fear center." "If you see a snake or a picture of a snake, the amygdala will light up — it's a threat detector," said Iacoboni.
Party of fear. Of course that's a generalization.
Also FTA: Regardless, it is too simple, he said, to chalk up our political ideologies to brain form and function.
Still, you can't help but raise an eyebrow.
drmangrumDec 19, 2011
Of course, the guy didn't mention the Amygdala's other functions:
* Arousal
* Emotional Responses
* Hormonal Secretions
* Memory
Keep in mind that arousal in this context doesn't mean sexual arousal.

f**k everything about this article.
alanocuDec 19, 2011
So you think that Democrats are dumb, too. Totally agree.
Closed AccountDec 19, 2011
No, Alan, you stupid f**king troll.
I think that the idea of dividing an entire nation of people into 2 rigid ideologies is the pathetic dream of mindless partisan hacks. Case in point, petty little self-hating bastards like you.
It is vain, strutting simpletons such as yourself, with your rabid partisanism and two-dimensional world view that are ruining political discourse in this country. But you don't give a f**k, do you? You just want to be a Digg superstar and whine about "Democrats."
What a stunted little mind you have. I guess being gay and at the same time a vicious apologist asslicker for the GOP has taken a toll on your malformed brain.
Maybe you can have a little session with your buddy Marcus Bachmann and work out your issues. Maybe then you'll finally fit in with the people who are seeking to take away your rights and destroy you.
anub1sDec 19, 2011
Yeah, f**k science and what it does to explain why you think the way you do. Facts are meaningless, right? It's all about how you FEEL about things, right?

You want to base your reality on a single study with 120 subjects - be my guess.
just don't claim it to be a scientific fact. It isn't.

From the neuroscientist who conducted this little study:
"It's very unlikely that actual political orientation is directly encoded in these brain regions," he said. "More work is needed to determine how these brain structures mediate the formation of political attitude."
Nice try, numbnuts.
drmangrumDec 19, 2011
Except this is bad science: They're drawing some pretty bold conclusions from an EXTREMELY small sample size about an organ we know very little about.
The fact that so many arrogant liberals are trying to use this as some sort of proof of superiority is very telling.
rayvrDec 19, 2011
Well, I guess that would make you a far rightie.

Wrong.

I wasn't talking to you but the foul language is a real turnoff.

This also caught my eye. It might explain why I went from a Reaganite and NRA member to becoming a Naderite.

inb4 brain size insults.
vitriolandangstDec 19, 2011
It's hard to argue with consistent statistical evidence and brain structures that can be imaged.
It dovetails with findings that "Evangelical Christians" have smaller left frontal lobe structures related to "impulse control" and a reduced capacity at information storage -- my own theory is that this doesn't mean they learn less, but that the learn when emotionally stimulated. Calm discussion won't reach them.
Stress hormones cause suppression of speech in early childhood development. So the more FEAR you push on a society, they more they will seek authoritarian leaders.
>> It troubles me, that no matter what can be PROVEN about a failed policy of military intervention, that leaders who constantly act like there is a threat that must be quelled, are creating a self-fulfilling prophesy. Scare the people enough, and you eventually create people who respond to only strong leaders and become violent.
TL.DR; The larger amygdala creates a need for a greater douche leader.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

1% of the human traits we all share are 'political' in nature. The other 99% of those traits we all share. To hate on your neighbor for those 1% of differences is foolish. To love your neighbor for sharing the other 99% of those traits is much wiser.
In order to move forward, we really need to let this bipartisan bulls**t go. It is clearly not working.
davidnivenDec 19, 2011
I don't see how you can go from one extreme to the other unless you first acknowledge that your views were almost totally wrong, inaccurate, and/or immoral.
I mean, it's one thing to go from a moderate to a liberal or from a moderate to a conservative.
But, I don't see how a far left hippie protester who hates Wall Street, admires Karl Marx, and thinks abortion should be a sacrament to a far-right type who loves the free market, thinks communism is evil, and believes that abortion is always murder.
Or vice versa.
But, miracles have occurred.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

You don't see it, because you're an idiot. Don't worry, we don't hold it against you.
On second though, we do. Sorry.
frumblerDec 19, 2011
I worshiped on the altar of Ayn Rand in my 20's and Rush had me convinced the Clintons had murdered Vince Foster. Now I love OWS to death. It happens dude.
May it happen to you. Namaste.
davidnivenDec 19, 2011
Never read an Ayn Rand books. Never heard about Rush declaring that Clinton had Foster assassinated.
But, I used to be naive until I got a job, paid taxes, and couldn't live in my parents' house any more.
May it happen to you, too.
frumblerDec 19, 2011
I'm 46, and my household in in the top 5%. So I guess it has happened to me already!
Thank you so much for the hope however.
Rush rarely declares, he insinuates, he's just an "entertainer" remember?
My rightie past is still an integral part of me, I don't deny it, it has helped me get to where I am.
But I was never really happy, until my leftie side joined the party.
So you have never read Ayn Rand? Wow, you have a long way to go buddy, you are starting so sound very ignorant.
melthornalDec 19, 2011
Who needs Ayn Rand when you have Andrew Ryan, amiright?
aristotle0dudeDec 19, 2011
Extremes? Demolicans and Republicrats?
I hate to break it to you guys but both American parties are on the right end of the spectrum. You might have some "left" leaning people in the democrat party but over all, the Democrats are barely more to the centre than the Republicans.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
