FTA: "One thing is clear: the complex and opaque industry-specific subsidies we now have are inefficient and wasteful.
"They are more likely to be about the political clout of the oil, coal, nuclear, wind, solar or ethanol industries than about the actual benefits -- if any -- that they deliver."
With the billions that are wasted on energy subsidies, something needs to change.
Well, they might have to just rely on their own competitiveness. I am not sure the industry can do that yet. It seems the green energy still needs the extra help.
No, they don't. The Government has a proven track record of picking losers, like ethanol. Alternative energy will happen on its own when it makes economic sense.
if nobody ever stryr things up by making a debate or trying out new things
"changes will happen on it's own when it makes economic sense" will be pushed off until it's too late
I hold the belief that subsidies should be handled like other assistance programs and should have a time/income stipulation on a per business basis. Far too many businesses (though real abuse is low) 'abuse' subsidies programs cause funding issues for businesses that really need it.
Fun Fact: For the same money the gov't gives in subsidies, they could pay 202,527 people $20.00 an hour to stay home. Think of how much less polution there would be with all those cars off the road. Wait, they would be burning electricity watching Oprah reruns so it would be a wash.....never mind.

A what conceivable reason would the wind and solar industry have to ever be fiscally self-supporting if they're getting nice, fat subsidies?

That and this country already encourages people to stay at home and do nothing and get compensated. It's part of the problem.
