gizmodo.com— We use polyurethane to make just about everything—garden hoses, furniture, the entirety of my local 99-cent store. It's easy to produce, durable, and dirt cheap.

Seems like whenever there is an abundance of something, some kind of organism may show up to eat it. Reminds me of an article a while back about a mold at Chernobyl that was living on radiation.
Most worthwhile medicines and technological improvement have a root in the jungles of South America or Africa. Even if you have never hugged a tree in your life, it may become in your best interest to preserve some of that land. A single acre of jungle will have about 300 different species of trees and another 300 to 400 species of higher plants.
The Gaia hypothesis suggests that organisms and ecosystems on Earth cause substantial changes to occur in the physical and chemical nature of the environment, in a manner that improves the living conditions on the planet. In other words, it is suggested that Earth is an organismic planet, with homeostatic mechanisms that help to maintain its own environments within the ranges of extremes that can be tolerated by life.
At the current rate that we are generating plastic waste, it might take a thousand years before these guys can chew that down. This kind of news will unfortunately make some people feel validated in their wasteful habits expecting that the planet will fix itself.
This is exciting news but it is naive for those of us who think that there will ever be a quick fix to the problems we create on this planet.
