A thing Iran would love to re-create, right over the continental United States or maybe Europe. EMP.
Closed AccountJul 4, 2010
Because of the grave threat of stuff like this, we need to invest in serious EMP hardening of the electrical grid and power plants, water supply, gas supply, telecommunications, food and goods transport, and move more towards fiber optic communications lines, which are resistant to EMP.
It wouldn't cost that much compared to the security that it would bring, because right now anyone with a single nuke and a rocket can send the US back to the late 19th century.

Unfortunately, congress has more pressing matters. Cap and Trade, Amnesty and the rest of Obama's and the progressive's agenda. If Iran's president is patient enough, Obama will weaken Israel further and transform America into a Sharia law, Islam friendly, Spanish speaking, Communist utopia that no longer will be a threat to the peaceful government of Iran. When Obama is through, we won't need to harden anything 'cept the borders to keep us all IN.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

EMP safeguards ought to be a very high priority item to both Democrats or Republicans, just because they're an existential national vulnerability.
As an American (and as a somewhat liberal Democrat), I believe the Republic's fundamental security comes before political party, and I think we can all find common ground around this and don't have to make it a partisan issue.

A far bigger, yet parallel, concern would be geomagnetic storms causing similar affects naturally and without warning.
crixmadineJul 5, 2010
But what motive would any country have?
By launching a nuclear warhead (or any warhead) at the United States you are committing suicide, physically, politically, and economically.
a) The US would launch 100 times the amount of warhead right back. Forget about M.A.D. The opposing country would be wiped away. The US wouldn't.
b) Every US ally would likely retaliate or ostracize the opposing country.
c) Wiping out the US economy would significantly damage the world economy.
We like to live in 'what if" world a little too much. Certainly it is possible for China, Russia, or even Israel to launch a weapon at the US...
But they're aren't going to.
craftyguyJul 5, 2010
"a) The US would launch 100 times the amount of warhead right back. Forget about M.A.D. The opposing country would be wiped away. The US wouldn't."
Detonating something like 100 nuclear warheads just might cause a little something called a "nuclear winter", which would most definitely wipe out most large nations. Starting with their food supplies.

Sigh... I'm well aware of EMP being a real threat. I was referring to the parent comment's thoughts about Iran having the capability of detonating a nuke over the US tomorrow or something. I'd be more worried about Russia or Pakistan right now.
Closed AccountJul 5, 2010
Sigh..... guys, I'm well aware that EMP is a real threat. But as someone mentioned above, attempting to detonate a nuke over the US would be the last action carried out by whatever nation is stupid enough to do so.
Iran isn't even close to having a nuke or even a ballistic missile capable of delivering it 4000+ miles away. And even if they did, launching one at the US would be the dumbest thing they could do and would result in a full scale nuclear war with the backing of the rest of the world.
Ahmadinejad may be an totalitarian assh**e, but he's not an idiot.

No s**t. Iran can barely hit their own country with a missile.
docbob84Jul 5, 2010
you don't need a nuke to make an EMP. Just some decent yield conventional explosives and a well-formed spiral made of conducting metal.
elburro88Jul 5, 2010
I know quite a few Americans would love to re-create this over Iran as well.
Just stop supporting Israel and most of the hate from the Middle-East will vanish. It's what feeds the hate and is used as a justification for their terrorism.

You know how our sun is going to become really big and the flames from it are gonna be in the earths orbit, you think they could make like a spaceship slash bulldozer thing to go on the side of the earth and push it over, or is there something to do with magnets that would prevent this.
BTW how the f**k do magnets work? People be making fun of ICP because they asked a valid question.

Typical digg. All submissions pointing to the source NPR site, but the pointer site ends up with all the diggs.
I was an NBC warfare specialist in the 80s with a secret clearance and, while I knew about this blast, I could not find out much about it as much of it was top secret or higher. I was privy to a few manuals that contained interesting information, especially regarding radiation burns, but almost all of that was available at your local library too. Anyway, I am glad that much more information has been declassified.
youngcebJul 5, 2010
thats not funny
lostngoneJul 11, 2010
And we are upset at BP for spilling a little oil.
Why isn't anyone outraged at this?
Just because it happened a few decides ago, no one seems to care? I would say trying to alter Earth's magnetic field would be classified as a "bad" thing.
It isn't like you can undo/clean up something like that up.
firesightsJul 21, 2010
"Code-named "Starfish Prime" by the military, it literally created an artificial extension of the Van Allen belts that could be seen across the Pacific Ocean, from Hawaii to New Zealand."
Will people please stop using the word "literally" as a method to emphasize a point? I expect to overhear that in a conversation with a bunch of frat guys talking about how much they are "literally" going to drink this weekend, but not in an NPR article.
agentdJul 24, 2010
RTFA Brah, it LITERALLY Extended the Van Allen radiation belt.
You, are doing it wrong.
