Just got done reading that, luckily our magnetic field will give us a chance to live longer. :)
svettodAug 3, 2010
not quite so sure about that one

The scientists made a MISTAKE!!!????? NO WAY!
What's gonna be next? That they'll find out that all this crap they have been telling people that there is no God was off by a factor of 100?
Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Except during a flux transfer event when the Earth's magnetosphere connects with the sun's and forms a direct-line tunnel for solar wind and radiation to smash into the Earth.

Until all those cars and tractor trailers come to life...
jk33lAug 3, 2010
Sounds like tomorrow will be a good day to take off from work, drink beer at home and watch the show. Although, it will probably just be another hot summer day.

Or a cold winter day, depending on what hemisphere you live in.

HMMM, taking of in the daytime to watch something you can only see at night..good strategy for keeping your job.
jk33lAug 3, 2010
To clarify, when I said, "show" I was referring to the chaos that this article and several others of the same topic are trying to incite could happen (without our magnetic field of course). Not the nightly display of lights from the upper atmosphere.
deathrabbitAug 3, 2010
The sun's firin it's lazor??

No, it's just going to erupt a hot steaming load on us.
That's better, right?

"coronal mass ejection"... according to the author... I'm about to have a "coronal mass ejection" of my own tonight after seeing that eva sex tape from the post earlier today.
fitnessman220Aug 3, 2010
I thought that this was supposed to be a bad event but apparently it is tough for the earth to really get affected by something like this, 1859 event excluded
treshnellAug 3, 2010
Not too tough. Coronal mass ejections like this have been known to take down entire power grids. In 1989 CMEs blew out New Jersey's transformer, and it was even worse in Quebec where it knocked out the power badly enough that it took four days to restore.
Power transmission lines (basically, the entire power grid across the country) will act as conductors for the magnetic fields during storms like these. The build up of the geomagnetically induced currents along all the stretches of wires (and underground pipelines) can cause the grid to become over saturated and fail catastrophically (exploding transformers).
With forewarning like this, though, power companies can prepare for the extra load ahead of time.

I cant stand the word "boffin"
That is all.
neutron7Aug 3, 2010
Insert smart ass comment about me boffin your mom.
doctechnicalAug 3, 2010
I don't know, "Astroboffins" sounds like some really cool pastry treat you heat in the microwave. "New Brown-Sugar Cinnamon AsroBoffins! Part of this complete breakfast!"
zalysterAug 3, 2010
Many boffins died to bring you this information.

I thought God had a "Smite" button for direct intervention?
saumzAug 3, 2010
working in the TV industry, we rely on satellite communications to get all of our feeds. Hopefully this doesn't disrupt some of the satellites.
hipmanAug 3, 2010
I'll stick to cable.
haikufuAug 3, 2010
You do realize that your cable still ultimately gets to you over satellite, right?
asrrin29Aug 3, 2010
The flares were minor, and shouldn't be expected to damage satellites. The only reason this made any news at all because this is the first significant coronal mass ejection since the Sun has been in it's lower activity cycle. This could signify the start of a new higher activity cycle, but that's about it.
Beep111Aug 3, 2010
Hopefully it will light up the sky!
And not take out any satellites in the process

I expect it will be cloudy for all the times i could see the aurora. I really hope TV doesn't get knocked out, all the fox drones will be wandering around aimlessly with no instructions.
eezyvilleAug 3, 2010
We should be ready. It will be like all those zombie movies with a little bit of I Am Legend thrown in there.

the obama drones can tell them what to do after they get their instruction from the almighty

The Telegraph's "Solar Tsunami" vs The Register's "Solar Plasma Aurora Storm to Hit Earth Tomorrow!" in a battle for the most exciting headline before the Earth melts.
maturolaAug 3, 2010
wasn't this suppose to happend on 2012???
asrrin29Aug 3, 2010
Wow, I don't know if they could have possibly sensationalized that any more than they already did. Then again, it IS The Register, and from what I hear it's pretty much one step up from a tabloid.
Folks, we had a solar flare, we are going to have some pretty Northern Lights, and have a small chance of seeing a brown-out or two in some small city. Nothing to see here, move along.
asrrin29Aug 3, 2010
small correction (damn time outs):
had had a coronal mass ejection (though there was an unrelated solar flare). This is what causes the northern lights to move further south, not solar flares.

We've had clear skies for days on end here in lower michigan. But, the one freaking night I'd like it clear, Gosh Darnit, it's going to be cloudy!!

Nice to have the Aurora Borealis seen in lower michigan. Too bad I wont be able to see it.

Put it on the visible spectrum, turn the sensitivity down to around 80 and check out the loop. It looks like the clouds are clearing out. For now.

I eagerly await my solar-radiation powered super-powers. Come on, shape-shifting! oooh! or flight!
jk33lAug 3, 2010
Haha. Yeah except I was referring to the "show" being any disruptions that may be caused by atmospheric disturbances which could cause issues with communications, blackouts etc. As for watching the night shows I am too far down south to probably see any of the lights.
friday1970Aug 4, 2010
Clouds went away last night, and I was in Fowlerville Michigan, possibly one of the darkest areas in close proximity to Detroit.
No Aurora Borealis could be seen. Hoping for tonight.
jimbobaiiAug 4, 2010
Does anyone know how long this phenomena is likely to last? I'm camping in the wilds next week and would love to see it. STONED!
