haikufuAug 9, 2010
Dr. Zahi Hawass is not an open minded person. There is a lot of evidence that suggests the pyramids and the Sphinx were built before 8000 BC and that the Egyptians just put there marks inside of them later, but he wants nothing to do with it.
Unfortunately, many of the people making the biggest stink about the evidence are nutcases in general, which doesn't help the cause. But, if that area of the world was completely dry after 8000BC, and the Sphinx has massive water erosion on it, I think that warrants further investigation. Also, the pyramids only lined up with the stars around 12,000 BC due to the procession of the Earth's axis. It's definitely the most interesting thing on the planet that we've found, and I think that more research needs to be done.
stillhateyouAug 9, 2010
"But, if that area of the world was completely dry after 8000BC"
That's a very big "if," and would appear to not be the case:

Note that the fellow writing the second link there isn't some crackpot, but has a Ph.D in Geology. He pegs the date of construction as being ~5000 BC, a far cry from before 8000 BC.

I saw when they broke through the first door by robot on a documentary. It's MUCH, MUCH harder than it looks. The tunnel is so goddamn narrow, it's at a steep incline and the doors are tough to break through. It might be partially politics, but I'd wager it's mostly logistics and physics problems.

I'm actually 11,458 years old. One of the oldest immortals. We were never in south America with a library, but there is a sweet temple that was retaken by jungle after the great population collapse no one has found. Chamber 3 has my real name in it. It's somewhere near the Olmec La Venta site, a little inland around these coordinates: 17.878883,-93.919064, but exactly where I cannot tell because the star has not centered on the galactic plane yet. There are some special engravings under the sphinx paw. I passed through the area 12 years into their making to see if any of the great beasts were left in the north. But I know of no one from Mars. Although, now that I've seen the developments of the past 110 years and think back to about 6700B.C. or so, some things begin to add up. There are 12 other immortals I know from beyond the great beginning of 3760, when the lightstorm happened over the Tigris. We were young then, and had not yet tamed fire. I can list at least 73 sites off the top of my head yet undiscovered and highly valuable to our history. 3 major ones in North America, one just west of Yellowstone with some serious S%!t there you'll love, and would put you ahead in terms of how the continent was settled. There may be 30,000 years of knowledge, but grandpa didn't like to talk about the kinstrife beyond my earliest days. Too bad...

This is an actual response on the page to the comment:
"One of the most amazing structures touched by modern man, are pyramids and mastabas. These structures are found not only on our planet, but the moon and Mars.
No matter where one goes on our planet, one will find these structures on every continent and under every ocean. An although these structures are dated at 4500 years old, their real dates of construction are unknown. Some date them from over 10,500 bc and existed when deserts where fertile savannas covered with grasses and trees. As far as a library goes, some feel the Spinx paw harbors some form of very ancient library. Ancient Sumerian tablets indicated that there are 3 such libraries located in South America, Eastern Europe and North Africa. Indications are that these sites contain knowledge spanning over 30,000 years of amazing knowledge that alludes to a prehistoric solar system wide civilization that flourished before a terrible war occurred. Once we go back to the moon and eventually Mars, there is no telling what we will find. You can bet it will be most interesting."

Also, its the body of Jimmy Hoffa behind them.
freckleearsAug 10, 2010
There is a very easy way to get through them. Drilling equipment, some TNT, and excavators.
They just don't want to destroy whatever is inside the pyramids secret chambers and the pyramids themselves. For all they know, there are 12 chambers above the Queens Chamber with hundreds of millions of dollars of artifacts in them perfectly preserved with 0 contamination for thousands of years. A robot making a small hole and exploring would limit damage from humidity and heat. The inside should be a cool 4 degrees Celsius.

I'm fully willing to eat my words, but in the little bit of looking I did, it looked more like flights of fancy, wishful thinking and creative tales of mystery to maintain tourist interest. But I'd love it if I were wrong; it would only further prove how awesome the ancient Egyptians were.
overdrivenAug 9, 2010
In the last 5 years, there have been several similar articles released stating that they were about to activate a robot that would be able to penetrate the second limestone door. Oddly, there are never any updates and more articles continue to come out years later (like this one) stating that they are about to start using the robot. I would love to see some results from this, but I'm not holding my breath.
batkinsAug 9, 2010
Question: Why do they need to use a robot to do this? If there are handles on the doors, that insinuates that they can and/or were meant to be opened by a person, right? Instead of spending lots of money and time building a robot to do this can't we just send a person in to open the door? Just saying..
Closed AccountAug 9, 2010
The shaft is only 20x20 cm, good luck getting a person in there.
tokeliAug 10, 2010
Plus, even if the tunnels were large enough for a person, these doors have been closed for thousands of years. The handle would disintegrate probably if touched, and you don't know if opening the door could upset anything that might collapse. Much much safer to have a robot drill a tiny little hole through the door and poke a fiber optic camera through. At most they'd cut a small hole into the door to get a robot actually inside, afterwards.

FTA: "The pyramid, known as the Pyramid of Khufu after the king who built it around 2,560BC, is the only wonder of the ancient world still standing."
I like how they say this as if its proven fact. it's not fact. it's theory.
tsk05Aug 9, 2010
So is gravity.
bookantAug 9, 2010
@TSK05
I'm usually the first one to pull out gravity as an example when I think someone doesn't understand the real meaning of the word "theory," say a creationist for example . . . .
But Egyptology and ancient history aren't physics, and the kind of preponderance of evidence it takes for something to become an accepted theory in the hard sciences isn't always the case in the soft/social sciences. Some of the theories in Egyptian history are really not much more than guesses or assumptions.
athomeboy2000Aug 9, 2010
It's a "fact" to people like Dr Zahi Hawass who insist Egypt is the greatest culture to ever walk the earth. But to a LOT of scientists, the age of the pyramids and sphinx is far from proven.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
tsk05Aug 9, 2010
Bookant,
There is a definition of the word theory. Only one exists (despite it's conventional usage). That's why I said I am not sure whether the date and ruler qualify as theory but if they do, as per HapeninHap's statement "it's a theory," then gravity is also just a theory.

*raises hand* I have a question!!!
We have technologies that allow geological surveyors working for oil companies to look underground and find untapped oil reserves without drilling first.
We have technologies that allow us to map the ocean floor. We have technologies to see far into space and get glimpses of galaxies, stars, even find other planets!
We don't have the technology to scan and look inside one. big. buildng?
reborninflamesAug 9, 2010
I think you could but it would just show you dimensions of the chamber that's behind the door. People want to find the burial treasures and archeological artifacts, and you can't really do anything about those without being on-site.
But yes, I am surprised they haven't been able to come up with a full scan to map the interior structures.
thecheat1Aug 9, 2010
Another question... Why don't they just send in a person to go lift the doors up? I'm sure some adventurer would love to do s**t like this, even if it is a risk to their life.

wait...do you think there's oil under the pyramids? oh man Dr. Hawass is going to be rich!
Closed AccountAug 9, 2010
Dr Zahi Hawass wont allow it. Apparently there was some controversy some years back I guess there were a few achaeologists that had found evidence that there could be tunnels underneath of the sphinx. They were granted permission to use ground penetrating radar and had figured out there were several rooms underneath the paws of the structure. They reported their findings to Hawass and were told to cease their expedition immediately.
athomeboy2000Aug 9, 2010
I believe his excuse was ground penetrating radar could "damage" anything in the chamber, which is complete BS. He's coving something up.
Closed AccountAug 9, 2010
Supposedly they were told by Hawass that if rooms and tunnels were to be found under the sphinx that it would undo everything that is known to modern egyptology and would have significant impact on several religions. Specifically having to do with the known age of modern civilizations
Since the sphinx, in my opinion, has been provin to be older than 10,000 years old I would love for these tunnels to be excavated. It would give us insight on an age of human civilization that has been wiped from the history books.
ozroyAug 9, 2010
I could be wrong, but I think those geological surveys are done by setting off a large explosion and then measuring how the sound waves bounce around in the ground.
I'm not sure the egyptians would like large explosions being set off inside the pyramid.
Closed AccountAug 9, 2010
Usually just 12ga. blank shells. Not too big of a deal. There are other methods being used as well where you just drag a device across the surface.
sweetneo85Aug 9, 2010
You mean like the beginning of Jurassic Park?
kaysea112Aug 9, 2010
As a former geophysical surveyor I can tell you this; as far as I know the technologies that exist to "see" underground without drilling are only capable of measuring differing densities, magnetic and radiometric intensities. Not really useful unless you want to check if there is a cavern underneath. Forget about tunnels because the smaller the cavity is the more unreliable it is, most likely anything smaller than 2m. Plus there's a great deal of interpreting the data which makes it more susceptible to human error.
its not perfect but its the only thing we got.
zerocubedAug 9, 2010
I was more like, pointing out that we have technologies to see a hell lot of things that we usually can't see at all or very well, but somehow are unable to look inside a building. I'm sure if they gather a couple MIT students and tell them to figure it out, they'd have a new method within a month or less.
w1cked1Aug 9, 2010
It's just technological masturbation for grant money. It's not even a robot, it's a remote control, there is a difference.
Simplest solution is always best... water cannon.. cut through it like butter.
I bet nobody even tried knocking.
evildeadashAug 9, 2010

I hope this is like the last time they had a robot going through a small tunnel in a pyramid. They did a 2 hour live tv special about it. This little robot was to crawl up a small tunnel about 50 feet and drill a hole in the slim stone that was blocking the path so we could all see the amazing mysteries beyond the stone. After the 2 hours of hype, the robot drilled through, put a camera up to the hole and what did it see? It saw another f**king stone about 18 inches away with nothing in between.
