Just remember folks, Record highs are proof or global warming like winter is proof of global cooling.
Its a symptom of global warming, not evidence.
mikbunnAug 25, 2010
lolwut. Symptoms are evidence by definition.
And unless you're being sarcastic or omitted "record cold" in front of winter, you're comparing apples to oranges.
thechauvinistAug 25, 2010
Global warming is a trend towards increased mean temperatures. What we learned this last winter is that harsher winters are a SYMPTOM of global warming.
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=earthtalks-global-warming-harsher-winter
blapierreAug 25, 2010
The problem is that we only have a little over 100 years worth of data. The chance of any year picked at random having the "record" temperature is about 1%. SOME year has to be the "record" temperature. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
timoumdAug 25, 2010
But what are the odds of 10 in a row being above average? 1/1028? And by this much. There is no denying a warming trend. The only question is if its man made. And Ill defer to the experts there.
dustin00Aug 25, 2010
Man made or not -- if it screws up our food supply, our shores, our water supplies, our coastal cities, it's going to be a major problem for billions of people.
More locally, if you have any retired relatives in Arizona and they run out of water and are forced to move... and abandon their property without being able to resell it, get ready for Grandma to move in with ya!
kingp43Aug 25, 2010
@ dustin00 - and somehow the CHAMPION of alerting the public of the eminent doom coming our way from global warming just bought a $9 million mansion in 2007 on the coast! Oh wait, he knows the coast line will rise just enough to get to his property so he can have the beach front. HA! I'm onto you Al!Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

"Its a symptom of global warming, not evidence."
Did you read that before you posted it?
timoumdAug 25, 2010
I dont see why anyone would bury him, he is absolutely right. A warm streak proves GW as much as a cold streak disproves it. The mountains of evidence and global temps and ice cores and models and physics provide the evidence, not a one year trend.
crunchdiggAug 25, 2010
well, damn-near-zero == damn-near-zero. I suppose you're right at some level.
Oddly, the people ranting about global cooling last winter, who presumably are scientifically illiterate, aren't saying that they've switched their position on GW now. Why do you suppose that is?
Did they get smarter over the last 6 months, or are they just dishonest? I suppose we'll know next winter.
timoumdAug 25, 2010
No but as a person who was upset by the "its cold therefore GW is false", the "its warm therefore GW is true" is just as annoying.
dipsomaniacAug 25, 2010
Just like tumours are a symptom of cancer, not evidence.
Right? That's how it works, right?
timoumdAug 25, 2010
No, like sneezing is a symptom of a cold. But its not evidence on its own. You could have allergies.

This message brought to you by the Koch brothers and the Oil industry propaganda fund.
How much are you getting paid to distribute the propaganda maxvette?
keggluneqAug 24, 2010
LOL. This is obviously a lie because it snowed a lot on the US East Coast last winter. We're lucky we have Sean Hannity to point out when global warming has been invalidated. Otherwise I might be tempted to believe the environmental fascists and their fancy "thermometers".

I too was hoping that the record colds in North and South America as well as Europe and Asia would offset the heat but it looks like the sparsely habitated parts of Earth (and the ocean) were hotter than usual, making the winter 5 hottest on record:
http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2010/20100316_globalstats.html
"The combined global land and ocean average surface temperature for December-February was 54.8 degrees F (12.7 degrees C), which is the fifth warmest on record "

thechauvinistAug 25, 2010
Max, I live in Hermosa Beach and I was SOOOOO frustrated that summer didn't seem to even start here until last week. We had June Gloom through the middle of August!
It seems that we were all whiny little babies: "waaaa waaaa I want a gorgeous summer but instead have a moderate 60s-70s because of this marine layer," while the rest of the world seemed to have been dying of heat stroke.

but until we get the creationists and such to accept that we are indeed altering the carbon cycle of a planet that has never experienced such meddling....(forget the "global warming" and "climate change" buzzwords - they should almost be banned)...this altering of the carbon cycle has unkown outcomes..not even the experts know what will happen...so is it folly to continue on with this "fossil fuel experiment."

When there is a record low, it is just normal weather.

Argentina is having its coldest winter in 40 years.
'We keep hearing in the press that the year 2010 has been the hottest ever, or at least hottest since 1880, or at least hottest since it’s been cooler. That claim is partially the result of cherry-picking data and even manufacturing data with sophisticated computer programs that “invented” weather stations where none exist.'
'Peru declared state of emergency amid plunging temperatures. Hundreds die from extreme cold in remote mountain villages also struggling with severe poverty. Source UK.Guardian. Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay experience extreme cold. In Bolivia, tropical areas temperatures plummeted to zero causing “millions of dead fish” in rivers that normally flow in an environment of 20 Celsius.
Antarctic sea ice extent is greater than normal (Data from National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado.)'
http://tucsoncitizen.com/wryheat/2010/08/05/a-matter-of-degrees-sizzle-or-freeze/
archiesteelAug 25, 2010
Others have already pointed it out, but the fact it's very cold in Peru and Argentina doesn't make it a record cold winter in the whole Southern Hemisphere. In fact, I think right now the Southern Hemisphere is having the fifth *warmest* winter on record.
This kind of misinformation might work with the drones who faithfully read WUWT, but it's not going to work on an educated audience...
trent1492Aug 25, 2010
Note to WR700 Peru and Argentina do encompass the entire Southern Hemisphere. If that was true we call it not the Southern Hemisphere but Peruhisphere. But you keep on cheery picking those figures so everyone can see you for the propagandist that you are.

"Ice is not melting,.."
False. The Arctic Sea Ice has been on a thirty year decline:
http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/index.html
"As of August 16, 2010, Arctic ice extent was 5.95 million square kilometers (2.30 million square miles),1.68 million square kilometers (649,000 square miles) below the 1979 to 2000 average."
And 93% of mountain glacier report a loss of mass balance.:
http://www.geo.uzh.ch/wgms/mbb/mbb9/sum06.html
Why do you lie when such lie are easily exposed?
forgeflowAug 26, 2010
The ice melts every year, and then refreezes. Some years it starts melting early. Some years it starts refreezing late. If there were a general downward trend, then why is this year's ice pretty much right in the middle of the average? Why did the melt start late? Why has it started to re-freeze early? It certainly has no trend. You are chasing ghosts in the data.

Nearly every hot/cold spell will generate a new record on at least one day. But you really need to look at the record. A new record on the 14th will not necessarily beat the record of the 15th. And is this record the hottest in 10 years or ever? Even if it beats a record from (say) 1927 that only means that way back in 1927 it was just as hot as today (by one degree).
danaegrandison11Nov 24, 2011
