travel.latimes.com — The Perseid meteor shower that will peak Thursday night and Friday morning is expected to be unusually bright and visible in the night sky this year because moonlight won’t be hampering the celestial show. The best time to watch will be from midnight to dawn, and the best place to watch will be any dark-sky spot you can find.

Summary of article: Last night somewhere else.

Well the article is quite correct. The meteor shower goes on for 3 days... Tonight and tomorrow also.

Why did your comment get buried? It's true, it's for three days.

Old meteor shower is old.
puddsAug 13, 2010
Yea, this is a day late, but good try.
Still, last night was just the peak of the shower - you can go out and see it anytime in the next week or so, it just won't be as impressive as it was last night. Since it rained here last night and is supposed to again tonight, I'm hoping for a reasonably good show on Sunday night.

Nice if you live in California

"the best place to watch will be any dark-sky spot you can find."
That, and the fact that the shower peaked last night are all the reasons I need to bury this.

I was watching last night, and saw my first UFO- not a flying saucer or spacecraft, but something my wife and I couldn't identify.
It had a dull red glow, with no blinking lights, moving too slowly for a meteor (it was visible for about 7-10 seconds), moving too fast for a satellite (too big as well), and although it moved fairly quickly, it had a bit of a smooth zig-zag motion to it as well. i saw that too.

I read, and consequently f**king buried this when Digg asked me if it should be promoted to the first page.
Good work, the rest of you, for resisting the urge to find out what the f**k this is about before digging it./

Last night I saw a strange object hovering near my house, I'd say a couple of hundred feet up. It was moving but very slowly and there was absolutely no sound. My village is VERY quiet. Anyway, it had red and green lights on it, flashing, but not always flashing, sometimes they'd move towards one another but I had the feeling it was still part of the same "thing". I grabbed my binoculars and had a closer look. At this point it was further away but I had a good look. I couldn't see the object so well because the lights of it bleached it out but it was dark enough to block out some of the sky, this was around 2am in UK mind you. Then, it made a very strange morph into a yellowy orange shape that was long and pen like. It then after a second went back to red and green lights. VERY strange I thought. I'm not sure how big it was because I'm not too great at judging distance, but I'd say it was probably the size of a small house perhaps.
Now, don't get me wrong, I'm a skeptical and rational person - I wont ordinarily jump to conclusions. I have no religious beliefs or anything of that nature and I always like to "see evidence" of things before going down any road, but this event has utterly shocked / spooked me out and I have no explanation for it. The object was silent and slow but made a circular movement across the horizon, so it seemed to be on some kind of flight path.
I know this night was unfortunate because it was a night of extreme meteor activity. I told some friends and they've already ridiculed me or made light of this and passing it off as a meteor. But it was not. How do I know? Well firstly I'm not stupid, I know what a meteor looks like and secondly, I DID see meteors...all around the sky in fact, whizzing past this thing (but obviously a lot further away)...but this thing looked like nothing I could ever imagine any bizarre weather system creating. It seemed to show intelligent movement. I even dragged my mum out of bed and she saw it too (though not through the binoculars). She couldn't find an explanation either. But at least I know that because another person saw it too, I wasn't just hallucinating.
Please help me DIGG! I feel like I'm going insane. I haven't been able to get this out of my head and I hardly slept last night :s
I was going to take a picture but I don't own a camera since mine broke. All I have is my iPhone but I already knew that was crap at night shots...is not HD and can't zoom. Damn you Steve Jobs!!
Any ideas?

Yes. Board yourself up in your house and have randomly placed glasses of water and a baseball bat to hand. But don't worry too much, they can't open doors.

A little late for this to be on the front page - but it was awesome last night. I'd say we saw 40 or 50 per hour.

Yes, the peak was last night, but the shower should still be very strong tonight. Had a great time checking it out with my girlfriend and am seriously considering driving out of LA for another round tonight. A blanket and a laptop with some music made for a really lovely time.

Too much light pollution... why don't those earth day idiots turn the fn street lights off for an hour when there's something to fn look at
maliciouskittyAug 13, 2010
Can you not see this in the east? Or am I blind?
Last night I kept checking - even had up some nasa camera based in AL - and saw nothing all night. Not even one.
But friends in LA said they saw some and they were quite bright, so they wouldn't have been blocked out by the neighborhood lights. I could see the stars, but no meteors.
I don't think I've ever seen a meteor shower =(
scottamusAug 13, 2010
Went out last night and saw one every few minutes. Too much light pollution but at least the sky was clear.
