Actually, they're still happening, it's just a few days ago was the best time to see them. I spent this morning out on the deck watching a few.

I live in the SF Bay Area and was able to catch the Perseid meteor shower Friday morning about 2am. My wife and I unfolded some chairs onto the sidewalk in front of our house and looked up. I was lucky because the sky was clear and many stars are visible. Was only able to see about 5-6 in 1/2 hour before the fog rolled in. But it was worth it.

I was way up in northern Maine for this, bordering on Canada, without a trace of electric light around. It was absolutely incredible.
