@CrazedLeper - "You suggest, in principle, the same evidence that the Bible offers for it's truthfulness but then scoff that the Bible *must* be wrong because you're right?"
The Bible doesn't offer evidence; it offers stories. Someone writing something in a book doesn't make it so. Are you really that simple-minded?
"All the prophets said God spoke to them."
Plenty of of people claim to hear voices. It usually happens just before they kill their family with an axe.
"Hundreds of people eye witnessed miracles."
No, hundreds of people witness things they do not understand or misinterpret. You have not witnessed these "miracle" for yourself but readily accept them as such. Very naive of you.
"You offer as "proof" of your case that "thousands" of scientists 'strongly believe in the possibility' and you somehow think that's better?"
No, I offer this as an example of people who actually apply logic, critical thinking and common sense to their thought process before drawing any kind of conclusions. You do not. You base your conclusions on whatever fits with your preconceived notions of God. You do not allow the possibility that you are wrong. You are closed-minded. You are everything that science is not. That is why you are "wrong" because your way of thinking is wrong.
"It's weaker because the prophets at least testified to *actual* experience."
So they testified that they heard voices. So what? For that testimony to be of any value they would have needed to back up their claims with verifiable evidence. Until then it is all hearsay.
"All your hopes are pinned on possibilities--and not even likely ones!"
Hope has nothing to do with it. Religion requires hope, not science. And for you to suggest that life elsewhere is not even likely speaks volume as to how small-minded you truly are. Do you even have the slightest notion of how vast the universe is?
So what? Science declared itself the official lens on the universe but it has not backed up that claim. Time and again, new ideas (and old ones) are scoffed at by you wanna-bes only to be "discovered" to be true. "Scientific evidence" is one type of evidence and it might own you but it doesn't own the world.

Lots of people have seen the Loch Ness Monster. People have photographed it, too but you didn't like the photographs. I've even seen video. Granted, none of the photos have been up-close but Loch Ness is a VERY large body of water with a very small population of local residents. With everyone carrying a video camera/phone all the time, It's just a matter of time before some incontrovertible evidence surfaces.
Lots of people have testified to having seen Bigfoot, too. One day, someone is going to hit one with a truck and then you'll be one of those people, too. In the meantime, you keep scoffing in your ignorance of things you haven't seen as if your perspective were the basis upon which the universe generates reality.

Moses was the *writer*. The *author* was present at the events you mock but for which you were not present . You take the "talking" snake out of context for lack of understanding. There are some relatively complex prerequisites required to understand the "talking snake" but I'll try to dumb it down for you:
A perceptual "trick" was employed by someone who had no presence in the 3-dimensional world. This was not the only time it was documented in the scriptures that an angel used this power to give the impression that an animal was speaking. It has happened since then, too. Remember the "Son of Sam"?
Furthermore, it was so-written because the existence and true nature of the person who was hiding behind the serpent was not to be revealed until a later time. I'm sure that explaining this was a waste of keystrokes and time because you're just going to mock my explanation but that's fine; that's what you are so what else would you do?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Why do you assume life would have to evolve twice to exist on both the Earth, and Mars?
People don't realize the philosophical, scientific, and theological implications of finding life on another planet. It would take centuries for the impacts of such a discovery to filter through our ways of thinking, and the impact will be about almost the biggest impact ever (2nd only to Jesus of Nazareth, probably). Seriously.
I love how people mock discoveries such as this as "unimportant".
Yes, finding possible proof of life on Mars won't help curb our unemployment rate, and it won't make the illegal immigration problems in Arizona go away, but anyone who doesn't see the intrinsic value in uncovering new information about our universe is an absolute ignorant fool.
A significant find, but no intelligent aliens, just some microbes that appeared, hung on for a while then died out. Somewhat depressing on many levels.
If this serves as nothing else, it should be a lesson that life is precious and that it can vanish for good when the environment is no longer amenable. Also that life may well be more widespread than we give it credit.
Quite the opposite. Showing that life is not unique to Earth should motivate us to seek it out, and spread ourselves beyond this single planet, where a passing asteroid could wipe us all away.
How? There is no way to do it know and in any forseeable future. Only moon is close enough to go there. Without warp drive we will never leave Solar System. And right know it looks like it's impossible to make.
You are correct at this current moment in time. The only way we have any real possibility of getting of this planet and hopefully pass our solar system is with the advancement of technology. It will not happen in our life time and most likely our kids life times, but eventually (lets just say 2400 C.E+) there will be such advancement in technology that will allow us to do this.
It's God tempting us! Satan trying to detract us from our faith!

As much as I wish this would shut up the religious, if we indeed find life there, it just won't. You can't fix stupid, and apparently sometimes you can't even correct it.
"Pope they found life on Mars!!"
"Great, call NASA and tell them we're sending a missionary. AND SPREAD THE WORD, WE'RE GOING TO SEE MORE MONEY FROM TITHES!"
Why would finding life on Mars "shut up the religious"? Why is life on Mars antithetical to Christian beliefs? It's not. Granted, it would change our view of God just a bit, but as a thinking Christian, I would love to see life on another planet, especially living. Would it be DNA-based? Is DNA-based life a fingerprint of the artistry of God, or does He prefer variety? What if the life is proven to be totally unrelated to Earth life, but shares some basic functional genes? That would almost prove the existence of God (if independent evolution of such complex molecules could be ruled out, which it probably could, mathematically).
If you are going to criticize people for being close-minded, I would recommend you step out of your glass house first.
I agree, the Bible never says we are the only life in this universe and honestly anyone who thinks this whole universe only supports one little spec of life, are the closed minded ones.
Hey Anubis, since your name is a god, by the definition of "religious" (of, relating to, or devoted to religious beliefs or observances), you are religious.
A black student of mine once asked me "Sir...what do you think of interacial dating?". Immediately i thought...oh f**k, im screwed now! So i told her..."Im against it...I don't think anyone should date anything from Mars." Her parents came in the next day screaming and yelling "How dare you tell my daughter its ok to date white people!!" I explained to them what i had ACTUALLY said. They looked confused, and then disapointed shook my hand and went home.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

So basically, what this article is saying is that I will turn into oil when I die?! Like some sort of super transforming beast of a God?

It's God tempting us! Satan trying to detract us from our faith!

As much as I wish this would shut up the religious, if we indeed find life there, it just won't. You can't fix stupid, and apparently sometimes you can't even correct it.

Might provide funding for space exploration though. Those squishy things on Enceladus need to hear the Good News!!1!

"may" is the keyword. None of the article I've read from Digg that have "may" in it, or the ones that end with a question mark ever comes true.

Once again scientists make an important discovery that is ruined by the headline.

If there has been life on mars that makes a huge statement about how alone exactly we may be in the universe. I can't see anything more valuable than that.

Researchers have identified rocks that they say could contain the fossilised remains of life on early Mars.
