ted.com — Clay Shirky looks at "cognitive surplus" -- the shared, online work we do with our spare brain cycles. While we're busy editing Wikipedia, posting to Ushahidi (and yes, making LOLcats), we're building a better, more cooperative world.

If anything I always thought we were running a cognitive deficit.
energyeinsteinJun 30, 2010
Thinking about things that matter and directing the response towards action is in a deficit. People are very easily distracted by things that don't matter.
diggamyteJun 29, 2010
TED is awesome.
amd64mmJun 30, 2010
I agree. It always makes me think.
energyeinsteinJun 30, 2010
The people TED showcases are awesome. TED gets kudos for finding them and putting them in one place.

It may in fact be acting as a barrier in front of more valuable comments as well.

A TED talk which interconnects lolcats, positive social change, open source software, and the psychology of punishment! Hallelujah!
ymegJun 30, 2010
Is the sound and video slightly off?
albumenJun 30, 2010
@WhiskeyLemur The general public's lack of historical knowledge is disconcerting, but that aside we have done significant back-sliding in the civility department in the past few decades.
poppingweaselsJun 30, 2010
It really annoys me when someone replies to another person's comment by starting a new one - probably in hopes that they'll get noticed and dugg more.
This is another level - WhiskeyLemur's comment is a twice nested reply itself, and there's a chance no one even knows what you're talking about. *sigh*
donpacific2kJun 30, 2010
Part of the problem is that so many media outlets make their $$ selling "conflict". So they find two extremists and present their rantings as a "healthy debate", whereas in reality it's just making normal, otherwise civil people, think that everyone else really is that polarized.
Plus in our increasingly connected society, it's much easier to express an extreme opinion and find a circle of online friends who encourage this behavior, rather than having to be civil and respectful of one's neighbors.
errdayimhustlinJun 30, 2010
It's important to understand that all of the wonderful things about the internet are being threatened by the RIAA, MPAA, and a bunch of treacherous legislation right now.
misternilsJun 30, 2010
was the video out of sync for any one else?

Yes

Just click the download button. You'll get a video that is in sync.

The whole point of capitalism is to deny workers "cognitive surplus" time.
Otherwise, you might realize how badly you've been screwed and organize others to do something about it.
sanmanJun 30, 2010
the whole point of your post was to say you want free wages
seltaeb4Jun 30, 2010
No, actually it was to say that those pulling down multimillion dollar salaries and multimillion dollar bonuses are stealing the wages of all those beneath them on the totem pole.
But if you're comfortable with execs making $50,000/hr. even as they chainsaw through their employees, then I guess you'd be a Reaganite apologist anyway.
sanmanJun 30, 2010
the issue of whether a company is paying too much to an employee is of concern to those who own the capital of that company - ie. shareholders, bondholders, owners, etc
if someone wants to pay his employee far more than what he's worth, that's his own business - just like if he buys his wife much more expensive jewelry than other husbands do, that's his own business
if I as a shareholder feel that a board is engaging in improper management, including assigning too much salary to an employee, then I can vote with my shares, or I can vote with my wallet by dumping those shares, etc
people do have a choice - if I don't like the way a restaurant owner treats me, or if I don't like how much the restaurant owner pays himself, or if I don't like the restaurant owner's accent, then as a patron I can always choose not to dine there
"but what if there aren't any other restaurants to choose from?"
D-uh, that means that the restaurant owner has a unique enough skill that others don't seem to be able to emulate, or else everybody else in society is a basketcase, in which case they need to put up or shut up
crayonno9Jun 30, 2010
I heard everything he said, but still have one question. Is it pronounced L-O-L cats or lolcats?
asubigsaxyJun 30, 2010
I think it is L-O-L cats because lol is the expression it is based on - I thought it sounded weird too.
appleofdischordJun 30, 2010
lawlcats.
abadonnJun 30, 2010
I always say lolcats.

MrBabyMan, you googled "lolcats" and posted all the links to digg, didn't you?

OK many people program computers for fifty cents per hour and dream of one day working inside a 7-11 for the minimum wage. College degrees are worthless now.
indio007Jun 30, 2010
I concur. A college degree is less important than a clean criminal background and drug screen.
What does that say about US society?
Comply or starve.
samurimasterJun 30, 2010
A clear background check and drug screen won't get you a job as an aerospace engineer
scottlawsonbcJun 30, 2010
I'll digg anything from TED

TED talk presents LEX LUTHOR
duncan3Jun 30, 2010
Why does he get to talk about this? Others did far more far earlier on this topic... Not that he's not a good speaker, but when i think of that topic, he's not on the list of people that springs to mind...Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Oh man I thought this was about human evolution developing super cognative abilities :(
uselesstriviaJun 30, 2010
That was fascinating. I would love to see more supporting evidence of the social contract vs penalty issue.

Amazing speech Mr. Hanks
avitorioJul 1, 2010
We are planning a TEDx in my university and are wondering who we should invite for the speeches. Can you guys help with suggestions?
wheelingdude86Jul 1, 2010
Cognitive surplus, direct open source governance and incentive based management will open the door to the cosmos for humanity.
andrewe323Jul 1, 2010
At 6 min 8 sec the speaker says, "Even with the sacred printing press, we got erotic novels 150 years before we got scientific journals."
That has to be one of the most awesome things I've EVER HEARD!!!!
