Imagine if you were genetically modified to glow in the dark by another species. Not the kindest thing they could do, is it?
Closed AccountAug 8, 2010
Research like that could lead to cures for diseases. As long as it doesn't go into the food supply, I don't see a huge issue.
jabbrwockeyAug 8, 2010
Why won't somebody PLEASE think of the piglets!
eschompthisAug 9, 2010
The featherless chickens are already in your food supply. Not a huge issue until farmers decide to breed their maintenance free animal.

I would thank them profusely and enjoy what is almost a superpower.

That'd be a f**king amazing pick up line.
"Hey girl, I glow in the dark. Wanna see?"
ak666jkAug 8, 2010
Always having a source of light? Count me in.

"Imagine if you were genetically modified to glow in the dark by another species. Not the kindest thing they could do, is it?"
Look dude, it doesn't matter if you glow in the dark or not. Pirates are still going to kick your ninja butt into Davey Jones' locker.
caramba421Aug 8, 2010
Now, if only they can figure out how to splice that gene into my c**k, I'll take back everything bad I ever said about science!
Closed AccountAug 8, 2010
I cringed when I read the word "splice" and "c**k" in the same sentence.
flyingcavemanAug 9, 2010
Why, so you can find it a night?
eikon89Aug 9, 2010
I'm thinking more along the lines of lightsabre duels.
arumikaiAug 8, 2010
Glow-in-the dark bacon would be awesome.
jbmar412Aug 8, 2010
bioluminescent bacon weave
badserverAug 8, 2010
Crazy scientists. I wonder what's the purpose. Earlier I found out on digg about glow-in-the-dark fish and dog :/ http://digg.com/d31PguF
itsameericleAug 8, 2010
The purpose is to have a visual marker to see to what extent the transgene (inserted genetic code from another species) has been expressed in the new animal. This way they can easily tell if the animal will express other genes they insert (usually transformed, or inserted, by the same methods).
weaponsAug 8, 2010
"I wonder what's the purpose."
You could always, ya know, read the article...

This was developed in "Honey I Blew Up (or Shrunk, I can't remember) The Kids"

Don't feed me it, but still interesting.

They just added the jellyfish gene for luminescence, it's still pork.

My dad has been genetically modifying pigs to glow in the dark since I was a kid :D
lurrch1Aug 8, 2010
Glow in the dark always = HEALTHY!
reelskamachineAug 8, 2010
This "news" is at least 8 years old. I remember learning about this in middle school.
ivalliosAug 8, 2010
I thought it was ridiculous when i read the title but it makes some really good points in the article.
protodonAug 8, 2010
They've already done this with plants and mice. It doesn't seem very practical anymore. I'd like to see them do it do some trees, and plan them along the street. Kind of like bio-luminescent street lighting but less lighting and more as a guide for where the road is.
netantAug 8, 2010
I want a glow-in-the-dark Westie puppy. Or a Glowing c**kapoo.
sexypopmachineAug 8, 2010
I'm glad I opened the article to see 0 pictures of said glow in the dark piglet.
PICS OR GTFO

I do not want green eggs and ham. I do not want them, Sam I Am.

So you would not, could not in the dark?
analogassassinAug 9, 2010
I would not, could not, in the dark.
I would not, could not, on a lark.
ryangainesAug 9, 2010
I would not, could not, here or there
I would not, could not, anywhere
fassAug 8, 2010
Of course this is useful. Say, as built-in illumination for nightly truffle foraging. Hillbillies will no longer need to make pesky runs to the store to get batteries for their flashlights when the urge for sweet, sweet bestial sodomy comes upon them.
Not to mention how even more jealous that stupid, sexy Flanders would be by an iridescent Spider-pig.

"Brighter pig, brighter pig, does whatever a brighter pig does..."

That would be awesome at Raves.
Better yet...FARM RAVES

I'll stick to my Pink Floyd poster if i want to see glowing pigs.

People cast the greatest diseases on their heads by themselves. Remember, human himself is always guilty in his miseries!
captspauldingAug 8, 2010
GloFish® are pretty cool to look at under a black light.
kinggorillaAug 8, 2010
Is there anything scientists can't make glow???

mikeoxbiggAug 9, 2010
And yet I still can't eat diary after 9pm without my gf smacking me in the face for my silent-but-deadlies.
DAMN YOU SCIENCE. Prioritize!
rpsmith28Aug 9, 2010
"As statistics reveal a 10% rise in the use of genetically modified animals for research, scientists appear to be divided about their usefulness."
This is clearly BS. Genetically modified animals are the cornerstone of modern scientific research.
gparksAug 9, 2010
Agreed. There is debate over how well knockout or transgenic mice model what a gene actually does in adults animals because of development problems but it is a relatively minor point. Anyone suggesting that genetically modified animals aren't useful is most likely a PETArd with an agenda.
rattusrattusAug 9, 2010
I hate PETA--they do more harm than good. I would love for rodents to enjoy the same protections of other animals, but I doubt it's going to happen. If PETA advocated for that, it might, but they've decided they're going to advocate the impossible--not using animals at all in research, which would mean the end of science as we know.
gparksAug 10, 2010
In practice, rodents enjoy pretty decent protection. All experiments have to be submitted to an IACUC committee consisting of experts and community members which must approve it- anything inhumane will be rejected immediately. But yea, the PETA position is retarded. If you ban animal research it is impossible to make new drugs.
petebob796Aug 9, 2010
Finally some progress towards those flying pigs everyone's always talking about.
firecellAug 9, 2010
WTF is this! Bad scientists, bad!
quambAug 9, 2010
I saw this interview a few years back with a genetic scientist of some sort --- he said we're at a level now where anything is possible, think mini-elephants, half human half squirrel hybrids, dogs with neon fur etc etc. Pretty crazy really. The only reason this kind of thing isn't done is for the ethical/moral implications.
hereticoftruthAug 9, 2010
PhysOrgy: "Scientists finally found the missing link after several years of back crossing between Man and Chimpanzees. They do lots more than just glow in the dark."
zeroethAug 9, 2010
I wish my pig would glow... :(
phucktardedAug 9, 2010
They already taught a piglet HM flash, we're getting closer to having IRL pokemon already!
hyperianAug 9, 2010
Finally, i can eat pork chops in the dark alone.
joemanmanAug 10, 2010
I love that you added "alone", I loled
katanaAug 9, 2010
While this seems stupid to most people being able to do this is important for other gene research. You can "bind" the glowing gene (for lack of a better term) to other genes to use as a marker.
I wish they'd do more stories on useful (to the public) pursuits like the modification of animals, mainly pigs, so that they can produce organs, and other parts that can be used in humans without rejection, that sort of thing will be saving loads of lives; though it might be a dilemma for those religious types who see pigs as unclean animals.

Did no one else notice that the article never ONCE has the word "PIG" in it? Talks about chickens alot. And chicklets. But not pigs? Am I missing something?
