I bet that robot already gets more ass than most diggers.
eSaketAug 9, 2010
Yeah!
psion01Aug 9, 2010
Hah! You clearly haven't seen my ass!
kazbaedenAug 9, 2010
That robot is a chick magnet. I used the Nao as a platform to test some bipedial locomotion methods, and walked it up and down the halls. So many chicks would stop and fawn over it, like I was walking a puppy or something.
Of course when they started talking to me and I went on about evolutionary fitness algorithms they suddenly had other things to do.

Isn't that how the matrix was born?
dinglebuttAug 9, 2010
terrifying
jordantneffAug 9, 2010
I seriously thought the first "emotional pose" was being lost and looking at a map. Turns out it was anger. Close enough.
lordgravewishAug 9, 2010
Skynet?
mstachiwAug 9, 2010
Yeah I got one of those... it just hides in its room blasting Depeche Mode all day only to come out and tell me I don't understand how it feels.
craig304958Aug 12, 2010
You mean emobotic
njoyitAug 9, 2010

swizzcheezAug 9, 2010
That was one of the worst demonstrations I've seen in a long time. I must have missed something but I did not read those poses as any more emotional than the Chuck-E-Cheese robots (who, BTW, are clearly thinking "Kill All Humans" all the time).
This looks more like programmatic mimicry than any actual emotion. Tapping the one sensor to make it scared, stroking it to make it happy. Good grief.
Maybe there's more to it than the video suggested, but from what was shown it's not much of an achievement.
xsubmergedAug 9, 2010
Good point, but answer this...the way we react external stimuli...do we do it through anything more than "sensors"? Our sensors are far more advanced sure...but it's a start
swizzcheezAug 9, 2010
"our reaction to external stimuli...are we able to do it through anything more than "sensors"?"
Yes. If I were left without stimulus for a period of time you cannot be sure if I will be happy or unhappy to see you again. Moreover, no combination of activities can guarantee a particular emotional effect. No set of stimuli will guarantee happiness. No set of stimuli will necessarily relieve pain.
Although there are physiological reactions that are (relatively) universal in humans, none guarantee an emotional state. That variability in stimulus -> emotional response is a great deal of what makes each of us individual.
What we saw, again from what was shown, was mostly canned responses to tightly controlled stimuli. Truly, I hope their breakthrough is more than what met these eyes.
kazbaedenAug 9, 2010
Precisely. I worked with these robots before, and they are very cute. The idea behind making them so adorable is to make it easier for humans to work with the robot, and that's all this article is about. The "emotions" are for the human's benefit; they're a show put on for us because it's what we expect from something moving. If we interact with something that lacks emotion, we tend to find it very off-putting.
I've opened up their heads and taken them apart. They're nothing more than a series of microprocessors and motors, arranged in such a way that is familiar to us. So how can we call a particular configuration of the servos and LEDs and "emotion." I don't know the reasons behind why we cry when we're sad and why we shake when we're scared, but why should a robot cry and shake? Why should robotic emotions be the same as human emotions?
The way I see it, true robotic emotions would have to be emergent characteristics from the artificial intelligence; they can't be a series of if-then clauses (if danger, then tremble). The robot may never cry, laugh, or smile, but it will have its own unique emotional responses to stimuli. Anything less is just mockery.
angryangrybrianAug 9, 2010
I for one welcome our new emo robot overlords.
flannellAug 9, 2010
DULL and hella disappointing
serif69Aug 9, 2010

so, when it cries, will it short circuit, have it's face melt, then explode? y'know...like at lisa's wedding?

"In future, say the scientists, robots are likely to act as companions or integrate with the web to order groceries online."
That sentence makes it seem as if those two acts were in some way actually related, apart from the fact that the robot is doing both of them.
I, for one, always require my companions to integrate with the web to order groceries online.

razorc03Aug 9, 2010
Next, we teach robots how to "defend" the elderly. When you combine "defense" and "emotions" together, what if the robot flips out and starts to "defend" EVERYTHING. And then the other robots learns to take cues from the killer robot, and then boom! War has begun.
Who goes to jail? The robots, or their creators?

Humans spend a lot of time wondering what is the reason they exist, what is their purpose. Robots should instantly know what they are made for, their reason to exist is self-evident.
