The DaVinci Robotic Surgery system is very sopisticated, but inelegant, bulky and extremely expensive. The data suggest a steep learning curve surgeons using it to operate. As more surgeons train in minimally invasive surgery this will improve, but it's definitely a work in progress.

Sounds like a good way for hospitals to cut costs. By laying off humans. Good thinking.

The robots still require fully qualified surgeons to operate them. The robots are more like the perfect pair of hands and eyes, than a replacement for a doctor. It would cut down on assistants however, considering all the tools on those arms.

No one will get laid off (unless the DaVinci is remotely operated by outsourced Drs. in India).

It's ok for doctors to be replaced by robots, because, indeed, there is almost no chance for a "human mistake" and feelings.
But I really don't want to see instead of sexy nurses a "big piece of talking junk" :D :D :D

No chance for a "human mistake", true. I've never had a car that didn't break at one point or another.

I work in Clinical Engineering at a hospital that has a Di Vinci, and it is an amazing tool for the doctors that use it. When the hospital was looking into getting one they had it on display in the front entrance of the hospital and would allow employees the chance to use it on some items they had on a tray. The person showing it to you would have you try and tie knot with it like you where tieing your shoes, when I first tried it was imposable for me to do, then he turned on the "3D" or stereoscopic vision of the machine and it was as easy as if I was doing it with my hands to my own shoe the machine has a haptic response to it that makes what you are doing "feel" natural. He then showed you how small the items you where using and it was hard to see that what you tied into a knot wasn’t just a piece of fuzz or lint.
