Yeah, what's wrong with having the Earth's most destructive species put samples of its DNA in a vacuum-packed, radiation-bathed life-hostile environment? I think Mars would be a better option. At least it has some sort of gravity, atmosphere, soil, etc. among many other advantages.
roontJul 5, 2010
mars would also be thousands of times harder 1) to install the "arK' and 2) to retrieve it if necessary. At least we can "see" the moon as more then a speck in the sky.

The moon is right there, an estimated 304 403km from earth. And we've been there and hit it with more things than any other celestial object (besides earth).
Mars is at closest 54 600 000km and at farthest 401 000 000km away and we've only hit it with a few things and never been there.
I get the feeling, in any instance, that this is a temporary salvage plan to hold us over until we are better equiped to prepare for the apocalypse.
myztryJul 5, 2010
The Artic is a much more hospitable place then any of those planets on it's darkest days.
Never mind the atmosphere. Can life designed for Earth even form without bone density forming gravity, magnetic shielding, and all those other intangibles that can't be bottled.
spazattack5000Jul 14, 2010
Mars has low gravity too keep in mind. Also the Moon has what is believed to be pretty good soil. One other thing is that solar radiation on the moon is significantly higher. At first that may seem like a bad thing but it can be harnessed to generate high amount of power for a lunar settlement.

Why don't we just stop slaughtering each other and fouling the places where we live? That should keep us going until our star grows and devours the planet. We haven't been around very long anyway and we're fragile, not hearty creatures. The odds are that we'll be wiped out from some astronomical, ecological or biological event, just like all the other species that have disappeared.

craig304958Jul 5, 2010

arizonaicedteaJul 5, 2010
Dinosaurs are a category of reptiles, not a single species, and did not use resources or affect the environment anywhere near the same scope as humans currently are. Really their survival rate is in no way indicative of ours.
strangebeastJul 5, 2010
'The moon, it's chasing me! Everywhere I go, there he is! Knock it off, moon!"
lordbenJul 5, 2010
I see several problems with this plan.
The first being storing DNA on the moon is pointless. By the time people had the experience to actually create an organism from just the dna sequence they would be more advanced than we are currently and not in need of the help.
Perhaps it might be a shortcut as they wouldn't have to re sequence all the things sequenced already, but again to make use of the tech they would have to be able to do their own sequencing anyways.
Then there is the whole fact that if all this data etc. is destroyed does anyone really think that there are going to be people setting up receivers etc. any time soon. Sure it would give them info, but even knowing what can be done with instructions etc the infrastructure would have to be set up. Even with highly detailed instructions on how to make a computer it would require thousands of factories. And likely thousands more to make the parts for those factories.
As for storing microbes, tulips etc on the moon the same thing applies. The tech required to get the stuff would be such that the items would probably not be needed by the time they had to tech to retrieve them. These items might be of interest to historians etc, but beyond that they're not going to help save the world or bring it back.
If i was the researchers I would gather all the info and put it into a huge torrent and ask everyone to download it and be creative on where to store it and how to make it readable thousands of years from now. Even if 99% of the repositories are destroyed odds are at least one will survive. Also I would make it include basic instructions on how to build everything from smelting and creating iron to a steam engine to simple circuit boards all the way up to a modern computer.
wastelanderJul 5, 2010
"Then there is the whole fact that if all this data etc. is destroyed does anyone really think that there are going to be people setting up receivers etc. any time soon."
"The information would be held in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish and would be linked by transmitter to 4,000 “Earth repositories” that would provide shelter, food, a water supply for survivors"
So the plan is to build the receivers also, but then (getting back to your point) why not just make 4,000 copies of the information instead? Its not like information storage is expensive.

What kind of RAID will they be using for something that size? Good luck replacing drives if they fail after the apocalypse.

Am I the only one that realizes that if the earth is destroyed that will change, and that we have no real theory on what will happen. If the earth is destroyed the moon could be peppered with shrapnel, plus if the asteroid changes the earths shape, orbit, gravitational field this will also effect the moon. Perhaps the moon will end up being a spaceship like in Hitchhikers Guide.. can we put an improbability drive on it perhaps?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Just for s**ts and giggles, can we put an Ark B somewhere too? I'm not thinking of hair dressers, middle managers or marketing specialists here, but a conservative paradise made up of Sarah Palins and Glen Becks: Bibles, creationism and Sunday school — no Darwin, Galileo or stem-cell research. A teabagger's Eden. It'd be interesting to see what that'd devolve into.
copypastryJul 5, 2010
Wouldn't work man, Jesus hates science. Don't you watch FOX?
TrancendenceJul 5, 2010
We don't deserve another planet. If there's going to be any ark it better just be bacteria and plant life.
IF we end the life sustaining ability of Earth with nuclear weapons why should we go to another planet? It might be okay if we terraform planets that are not able to sustain life to being able to sustain life and then end up wrecking the place but we better not move to a planet that can sustain life without terraforming and mess that up with humans.
In any case I see the human race's near future as fighting over limited resources (arable land, drinkable water, harvest locations, hunting grounds) and once the population gets to a sustainable size (resources renew at a rate to sustain the population) then we will start to civilize again and we repeat our mistakes all over again.

icadilJul 5, 2010
There is a lot of negativity here, the amount of peace to conflict is staggering, you seem to be suggesting that there is more conflict than peace. You are wrong, peace outweighs conflict considerably.
Also, I have no problem trying again on another planet, at least we will have learned, besides it is highly unlikely that the conditions will be exact and thus what we do here will have a different effect there.
