kiadragonJul 2, 2010
There is no fair to all the American children or college students who learned from these. I hold a degree in Electronics Engineering. I know precisely what electricity is and can explain its actions at an atomic level. I know precisely how you generate and control it. I understand its properties and have used these properties to shape my little corner of the engineering world.
I am not some genius. This stuff has been understood for a couple hundred years and perfected to the state of the art in silicon chips in the last twenty.
There is no fair here. There is WILLFULL stupidity. The sort of WILLFULL stupidity that will some day lead to violence. I am hoping the faculty of BJU gets mowed down in the first crossfire.

I went to a school that used some Bob Jones books (never for science though, those were always the same as the public school books). I guess our teachers weren't as radical or something because we all knew they were stupid and made fun of them. Anyway, our favorite line was something to the effect of "Prohibition was one of the greatest eras in American history." Then we'd laugh and laugh. Then cry just a little bit because someone gave those tools money.

A CHARGE, you undereducated f**kwad is when one material builds up an excess of electron charge (you seen static in a dryer right?). When another material has a sufficienlty LOWER electron charge, the conductor is the ELECTRON FLOW FROM ONE POSITIVELY CHARGES ATOM TO ANOTHER.

Knowledge that you can get from textbooks and the Internet.
chiefbandit2200Jul 3, 2010
Sure, but educating yourself is more difficult, as there's no direction and you're only accountable to yourself . School gives you direction, and forces you to study.
And good luck finding a job if you're a self taught electrical engineer, lol.
Closed AccountJul 3, 2010
Textbooks and the Internet? Are you quite serious? Textbooks are for building up the basics; a lot of the middle- to higher-level and especially cutting-edge stuff (at least in my mechanical engineering curriculum) is nowhere to be found in any textbook. Most of it is on the Internet, of course...in the form of enormous science journals you must pay subscription fees for. Knowledge ain't free. At least, not the good stuff.
moloboloJul 3, 2010
Again, you're only paying to prove you know something.
The only reason I can see you would need to go to school is to do "hands on" activities and to use resources you don't have, like a lab for example.
I just don't see why school is so expensive. Just seems like a huge scam to me, a scam I'm also paying for.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
kiadragonJul 3, 2010
No molobolo. You can get all the lectures (2 hours a day), but you wouldn't get access to the lab (2 hours a day). I got personal attention from the teachers when I needed it and got to work with kick ass hardware I never could have played with on the interwebs.
I also contract out at 40 dollars p/hour or 33 p/hour if you want me on payroll. Hard to do that without the piece of paper. Companies are dicks that way.

Closed AccountJul 3, 2010
"The only reason I can see you would need to go to school is to do "hands on" activities and to use resources you don't have, like a lab for example."
The resources you don't have access to often come in the form of professors and peers much smarter than you who are able to explain things that you might never have thought of on your own. Yes that might be out there to find if you look long enough but having a person who can break it down and teach you these things at an accelerated rate is definitely worth it. College is too damned expensive in the states to be certain but it's a lot more costly in terms of wasting your life if all you think it's for is the piece of paper. Might as well drop out now and start a business if that's what you think it's for.
s0nicfreakJul 3, 2010
You can easily find professors and peers who love the subject and are willing to talk about it for free just because they love it instead of just being in it for money. Besides, anything the professors are saying has already been written down and made into a book. The people discovering new things aren't teaching, they have jobs that pay more.
Anything you want to learn, you CAN learn for free on the internet. Several colleges give out everything that they give to classes for free online. And you pirate pretty much anything that isn't just given out for free. If you can't find it, just find someone who is taking the class and read their book, maybe even read their notes from lectures. That combined with forums and videos about the subject would be pretty much just like taking a class.
School does not force you to learn; I think the state of American schools has proven that. College gives you a consequence that you have wasted money if you do not learn. For some, the consequence of not learning is enough.
I homeschool my kids for free, I have gotten tech certifications by spending money only for the tests, and in another tab I have a list of colleges that will take test scores and life experience as credits. So it certainly is possible.
atroxodisseJul 14, 2010
On average college educated people make 1 million dollars more than everybody else, over their life time. So that $35K or even $100K you pay for a degree will end up being well worth it, since no one will hire you without a degree unless you have ridiculous on the job experience somewhere good. I went to a Tech College in Canada, paid $20K for an 11 month course(40 hour weeks) and have come out of it with a job at a major software security firm in the US. Get an education. It's worth it. People talk s**t about some places like Devry or ITT but it gets you a degree and it gets you some personalized training and can even get you on the job training because a lot of places recruit out of these tech schools. The place I went to had an upper 90s percentile for people getting a job in their field within the first nine months after graduating.

I can't speak for this particular book, but I was taught other stupid bulls**t of this magnitude at the Christian school I was forced to attend as a child. For example, did you know humans lived with dinosaurs until the great flood and that the sky was pink because of an ice shield around the Earth? There was no rain, only dew keeping things moist until god melted the ice shield to kill off dinosaurs, which were corrupted with evil spirits. That mountain of idiocy comes courtesy of ACE "science" curriculum. It would not surprise me in the least given my previous experience with and knowledge of this caliber of ignorance or malicious misinformation having been perpetrated in private Christian schools for quite some time already.
I for one don't think it should be legal for these sorts of schools to operate and be qualified as education because of gross fabrications like those mentioned above. I also don't think most people realize just how much bizarre and made-up bulls**t is being taught in these institutions. One of the few reasons I was able to escape and move on to real education and learning is that there was a largely unmonitored library that I ate up after completing my daily indoctrination; unfortunately, most of the people I went to school with are still trapped in that rabidly insane evangelical nightmare of stupidity and hate.

Wrong. You can use anything electric as long as you turn it on before the Sabbath starts.
The thing is, you're not allowed to flip the switch. That's considered as "work", and therefore forbidden.
Every Synagogue I've ever been to has a non-Jewish custodian working on Saturday to prepare the place for services and then clean up afterward. The catering is also done by Gentiles. In fact, some Jewish families who can afford it actually hire butlers, maids, and other servants to cook, clean, draw baths, turn lights on and off, etc. on Saturdays.
BTW, B4, Most Arks have curtains that are hand-operated. As acts of worship are not considered as work, it's ok to open it and take the Torah out. Same goes for flipping the switch that opens it if it happens to be electric.

Cannot say what electricity itself is like? Bollocks. I've met him. The following is my story:
"Hello?" Nothing, just static on the line. "Hello."
A crackly voice answered "Yes, hello, I'm here."
"Hi, is this electricity?"
"Well, yes, but it's E. Lectricity. I fail to understand why few people have the capacity to understand it. Just a little inductive reasoning would show that any normal fellow should be able to gather that I have a normal, full name. I face a lot of resistance trying to change that conception, so I've given up. But I digress. How may I help you?"
"Sorry," I hesitated, unsure if my needs had the potential to go forward, "it's just that my friend said that you could make things happen."
He chuckled softly, "Why yes, I can. I'm sure friends like Ben and Kirchoff have summarily shown that. I'll tell you what. Let's meet at a little place called 'The Source.' Go inside and take the elevator to ground. There's a nice little table in the back. See you in 15 minutes."
"Wow..ok, sure!" I was ohmestly surprised he had been that quick to hold up to my charge of help so quickly. I had heard about the place he referenced. It was the place that all the current intellectuals of our city frequented. I had to get going, but walking the entire circuit would be good exercise for me.
When I arrived, he was already sitting at the table, eyes a cool blue with a quick smile. His appearance shocked me. I expected a man more worn looking, but he looked like he had the potential to do anything I could want. "Good to finally meet you boy. Now what can I do for you?"
"Well, it's not just me. It's my friends too. Faradam, he'd like a portable stereo. Henry, well, he wants a... uh... he wants a personal massager for his lady." He re-coiled. First I thought of disgust, but the waitress had simply spilled some water on our table.
"Me, I'd like a portable game console."
"All fine," he said. "Anything else?"
"Well, there's one last friend, Vin. He wants a user replaceable battery for his iPhone."
The table began oscillating. He was visibly angry. It was if his discomfort was arching into me, as I soon became upset too. However, he calmed and composed himself. With a reserved smile he said, "TheVenin can get in line, because I'd f**king like one too."

korbatmasterJul 2, 2010
All the jokes I caught, in order:
Static, crackly, capacity, inductive (inductance), resistance, potential (voltage is potential energy), Ben (Benjamin franklin?), Kirchoff (Gustav Kirchhoff was a German physicist who discovered lots of things, notably his many circuit laws), 'The Source' (Voltage/Current sources), ground, ohmestly (ohm is the unit for resistance), charge, current, frequented (frequency), circuit, shocked, potential again, Faradam (Faraday is a unit representing 96485.3415 coulombs of charge, and a farad is the unit that capacitance is measured in), Henry (unit for inductance), re-coiled (inductors are coils), waitress spilled water (water conducts electricity obviously), Vin (possible play on Voltage in?), oscillating, arching, TheVenin (Thévenin's theorem)
I think that's it.

The funny thing is the line only being able to "see the effects" of electricity is true. You can't see the electrons in the air at all. However when it passes through the air ionizes and becomes plasma which is visible to the human eye. Lightning as you see is not electricity but the remnant of the path the current took.

I can just see the test questions:
Whats is electricity?
a) a mystery
b) a flow of electrons
c) thunder
d) a and c
Correct answer: d
dushJul 2, 2010
Haha, I think the point of their textbook, although somewhat misleading, is that while we can observe the results of harnessing electricity, as stated in the second sentence, we don't really know what it is in the strictest sense. We know the "flow" of electrons creates current, but the cause of the forces between atoms and their components has not ever truly been explained.
What causes these properties of certain substances to be such that the energy is transferred in the way that we are able to use and observe it? It's one of these forces of nature kinds of things where we study it alot and even have a lot of data about it but scientists don't really know the ultimate cause of these fundamental properties that allow it to exist in the first place.
You can say something is the way it is and even know a ton about the way it is, but we don't know the why behind that.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
aaroncoJul 2, 2010

seanmc303Jul 3, 2010
Seriously! Come on. Show some credible scientific sources to back that up that are not over 100 years old. Protons, electrons, and neutrons are not a huge mystery anymore.
saranagatiJul 3, 2010
by "one of these forces of nature" do you mean "one of the laws of physics" where as it's one of the only 4 constants in the entire universe?
zjbirdJul 3, 2010
The point of their textbook is to brainwash children and twist every aspect of knowledge they have it in a way to hopelessly suck them them into believing in a literal bible.
anarchy2465Jul 3, 2010
Dush (douche? lol) is most certainly correct especially when he says "the cause of the forces between atoms and their components has not ever truly been explained" (emphasis on THE CAUSE). The forces themselves are well known and saranagati mentions this when he says that electromagnetism is one of the four fundamental interactions in the universe. We have observed the effects and interactions of these forces but know very little about the forces in and of themselves.
dushJul 6, 2010
Exactly, we know what things like electricity and electromagnetism are, their properties, how they behave, how to utilize them and study them. But what actually causes them to exist as constant observable properties of the universe? What actually enables these forces and behaviors?

iboxJul 8, 2010
No, we know what it is, it's not a mystery.
knifesideleftJul 14, 2010
Just for the hell of it I'm going to get technical cause I'm bored. The answer is closer to B and if you really want to go far out I'd say A as well because maybe there are still some "mysteries" we don't know about yer.
Electricity is certainly not thunder though or lightning for that matter. That line about being able to sense the effects of electricity is one of the most true lines in the whole retarded paragraph. The sound you hear is vibrating air caused from the plasma created (the stuff you actually see) from the flow of charge. Its more like a ghost left behind from it.
Stricly speaking its all just a effect OF electricity but then again you aren't really wrong either in simple terms.
opmikeJul 2, 2010
You guys should read through the A Beka Book textbooks.
I had the displeasure of going to a Christian high school, and these s**tty "textbooks" were a standard part of the curriculum.
One of my biology books says that humans, while sharing many traits with animals, are not themselves animals because they were created in God's image. In a 10th grade biology book.
Closed AccountJul 2, 2010
An interesting thing about A Beka Books is that their math and english used to actually be way ahead of the public school level (not sure if it's still like this) and this was actually something that was frequently touted by other Christians I knew at the time. So when I first started going to public school I was ahead of most of the class in quite a few subjects. This gave me and some of my friends who were also raised in private schools a bit of a superiority complex that we therefore must be right about everything unlike those "uneducated public school kids" - little did we know how wrong we were about science. Looking back I can only surmise that the reason they felt the need to have many of their courses be a grade higher was to make up for their lack of honest academia in other areas like science and even history.

I graduated from a christian school (no longer a christian) and even though the books were specifically for christian schools, they were still accurate. Christian schools are bulls**t. They churn out students who they believe to be 'smart' by 'their' standards.
And they also churn out people who aren't very smart at all who believe themselves to be smart because they were told they were smart because their parents were paying ridiculous prices so their kids could attend.
As far as Martin Luther goes, I'd wager to guess that you not learning that he was an anti-semite (in his later years when he was senile and crazy) isn't even CLOSE to the worst inaccuracies you were taught at that school.
ps: DankBuddz, I believe you're referring to MLK Jr. OP is referring to Martin Luther.

All Christian schools are not the same.
I'm about the biggest anti-church advocate I know right now but I was in Christian schools up to college. My Roman Catholic high school was the best high school in the city - most equipment, best teachers, lowest crime/violence rate and highest morale.
We got the best education in the city on World Religion with ZERO focus on Christianity and absolutely not talk of which was the "right" religion.
Our sex ed classes were second to none. The class started with "The church's belief is that abstinence but less than 1% of this whole school will follow that belief so here is what you really need to know". Then went on to teach very graphic/informative lessons on contraception, STD's, etc.
In science class we learned about evolution. Creationism questions were always retorted by the teachers with "You learn that in religion class, this is science class and we're teaching scientific theory".
The only "bulls**t" part of the school was the few masses throughout the year for religious hollidays (which nobody liked) and a morning prayer along with the nation anthem/announcements.
Some schools may be all bulls**t but mine wasn't. I'll stand behind my education over any public school in the city, even if I won't stand behind their religious views.
solistusJul 3, 2010
Catholics have a long tradition of sponsoring educational institutions, and since the Catholic Church has generally accepted that science is the best tool to address empirical questions - they accept that the Earth is billions of years old, that human beings evolved from primates through the process of evolution, etc.
Bob Jones University has nothing to do with that tradition. It was founded by radical evangelicals to spread their very extreme version of Christian doctrine, not to be a respected institution of higher learning and education. There are Protestant schools that are quite respectable as well - many top private universities are still officially denominational, but their science curricula are not warped by theologists to line up with religious doctrine. Bob Jones University, Liberty University, and the like are year-round ideological boot camps for children of wealthy religious right families, and they really have nothing to do with Universities beyond stealing the name.

No, that's what christians all look like. And they use obsolete hairdryers.
dwtcJul 2, 2010
Any book from a time with photographs, muchless hair dryers ought to be current enough to know where electricity comes from.
Also, I love the line: "All anyone knows is that electricity seems to be everywhere and that there are many ways to bring it forth." That's comedy gold right there.

I dont think I've ever asked myself where electricity comes from. I just accept materials have electrons and protons in them.
Im going to take a stab (might be wrong) that electrons come from being inside atoms?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

What?! You're an idiot. I assume this is a joke. Either way, you sir, are an idiot. f**k!
johnfluxJul 3, 2010
EliteBeat, I don't know why people are modding you down and being rude. There is nothing better than someone actually asking questions and being willing to learn.
A single atom has a lump in the center (the nucleus, made up of neutrons and protons) and electrons orbit around the center. A material is just a large collection of these atoms which share some of the electrons between them.
In some materials the electrons are able to flow freely in the material, and we call these types of materials "metals".
If you now forceably place a few extra electrons on one end of a piece of metal and forceably remove a few electrons from the other end, then the electrons will flow through the material to try to even themselves out again. This is because electrons repulse each other.
The more electrons you add and remove to the two ends, the greater the force is going to be to push the electrons. We call this "voltage".
And we call this flow of electrons current.
One way to forceably add/remove electrons from the two ends of a piece of material is to use a battery. This uses a fairly simple chemical reaction to force electrons to build up on one side and be removed from the other side.

You've presented a great example of what science is able to do: enhance human understanding of parts and processes by describing their component parts and processes. But science has never actually "gotten to the bottom" of why things are. We still don't understand *why* what we call "fundamental" parts/processes exist to begin with.
Absolute efficiency = nothingness. So why is the Universe so damned full of parts and processes?
johnfluxJul 8, 2010
EddiePotato,
Science considers the "why" question meaningless. Questions like "What *is* electricity" is likewise considered meaningless. This is because such questions are not measurable and are thus not scientific and thus useless.
The only interesting question is "What equations and model fit my observations?". Everything else is useless philosophy and will get you nowhere.
As for a single model to fit all observations, you'll have to look at string theory or similar GUT (grand unified theory).

Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Nobody comes to the Father except through Him.
A publication from Bob Jones University doesn't change that. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I've read Leviticus and Deuteronomy. Anyone who wants to meet 'the Father' is insane.
tallestskilJul 2, 2010
Leviticus and Deuteronomy are Old Testament. Jesus said pretty much ignore all of that stuff and focus on the "treating others awesomely regardless of who they are" bit.
Or else you live somewhere where people who call themselves Christians are sacrificing animals, but that's not necessary anymore.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
diggnanJul 3, 2010
Wrong. A very popular misconception among more moderate Christians, that Jesus came and eliminated the old testament rules, this is not true:
From Matthew:
5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
(5:17) "Think not that I am come to destroy the law."
[Jesus strongly approves of the law and the prophets. He hasn't the slightest objection to the cruelties of the Old Testament.]
5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
(5:18) "Till heaven and earth pass"
[Jesus says that the Old Testament laws are binding on everyone forever. Must Christians obey Old Testament laws? Will the earth last forever?]
5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.
I don't believe in this garbage, but if you're going to call yourself a christian, follow what the stupid book says, don't ignore the parts that make you uncomfortable.

Diggnan...WTF am I in this thread! And yet, Christians constantly quote Psalms (see: the article itself), reference Sodom and Gomorrah, publish the book itself including the Old Testament, quote Leviticus when trying to project how find homosexuality so icky, etc.

What about all the people who lived before Jesus? Depending on whether you believe the dubious Biblical math of some 19th century American evangelicals or the entirety of the empirical record, there were somewhere between 4,000 and roughly 200,000 years of modern homo sapiens living on Earth before Jesus was ever born. Are they just doomed to hell outright, or trapped in limbo, or what? Seems like a pretty big oversight for an all-knowing, all-loving and all-powerful God, huh?
If your book is true and your God is real and as described, I have no interest in getting any closer to Him. He's a violent, petty, immature assh**e who commits genocide on a whim and tortures people sadistically for violating his ever-shifting, vague, nonsensical set of rules. He sounds more like a twisted serial killer than any sort of being worth worshiping in that sad excuse for a holy book of yours.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Listen man. I admire your attempt to argue the merits of religion. But you aren't helping your cause because you apparently have no understanding at all about what Christians believe and the history of Christianity. If you honestly think that Christians believe prior to Jesus everyone went to hellI, then you fail to possess even the most basic understanding of it. At least I tried to understand it before I chose not to follow it.

Being a master electrician for the last 20 years. LOL! What a f**king stupbo. Thanks for the heads up. If anybody has Bob Jones University on their resume if they ask me for a job, I'll point them to the local McDonalds. Obviously a degree from this University qualifies you to ask if you want fries with that. LOL!

So as a master electrician have you learned what makes certain substances transfer energy the way they do? Why causes electrons to function on a subatomic level in such a way that they allow energy to "flow" to other atoms?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

I don't usually do this, but i'll leave you with this basic lesson in electron generation. The six basic sources of electricity are; Friction, Pressure, Heat, Light, Magnetism, and Chemical Action. After that it gets complicated, so i'll leave you to your studies.
dushJul 6, 2010
Electron generation? or Electricity generation?
I'm not saying people don't understand what the sources of electricity are or how to utilize and study them.
I'm saying people don't understand why they exist as properties of the universe in the first place.
