Sometimes i'd like to think that there perhaps was life in Mars at one point, and it was a life form that pre-dated ours by hundreds of thousands of years. I'd like to think that it was a civilization that was far more advanced than ours, and just by some chance event within the universe, it was all destroyed somehow.
Although, those mountains do seem as though they've been shaped by water at some point. I'm just guessing though.

Well, if Earth had zero vegetation covering its mountains and zero rainfall erosion to help smooth the layers together, then i wouldn't be surprised at all if at least some of Earth's mountains looked just like that.
The patterns in the dust you can see on Mars could easily be made by wind erosion but the smoothing of the rock layers over time would probably take something stronger, like rainfall, i would imagine.
