Kathryn should relax and get the Hyundai.

too much electricity in one vehicle
plebesotericistJan 21, 2011
Great points, I'm sure they are better than gasoline more than 95% of the time.
I used to respect John Stossel when he was on 20/20, but I have none left for him after seeing him deliberately spinning information and leaving out facts about many things including hybrids and electrics in his "investigative reporting". I am sure this deceptive video will deeply anchor into the hearts of many for years to come.

Can't wait to get my hands on the leaf, and I really don't care what people have to say :)

It's a really fun car to drive!
geroncoJan 21, 2011
I'm sure. I never drove one, but I can imagine it's nice. My driving to work is only about 20 mins, with a total of about 150 miles a week or less, so this car would be ideal. I'm also trying to convince my in-laws and my parents to get one too, although my father really wants a Prius :)
**PS: Can't wait for the day that we will ALL be talking about watts-per-mile, and gasoline would be a term only old people will know what it is

My only beef with hybrids is that they seem needlessly complex. The beauty of an electric drivetrain is its simplicity (in terms moving parts and maintenance). Hopefully lower costs and higher energy capacity will make pure electrics go mainstream soon.
orieJan 21, 2011
This is exactly it.. I keep trying to get people to realize that hybrids are a stupid stopgap that people have been suckered into thinking are "green" simply because they put out less emissions. The truth is when you combine all the parts of a internal combustion engine car AND all the parts of an electric only car, you end up with something that creates a ton of pollution to just build in the first place. Outweighs all the advantages of tailpipe emissions i'm sure. Just get a good diesel if you want good mpg and clean emissions. Or go all electric.
/common sense.

No. No it doesn't. The vast majority of a car's embodied energy is the fuel used over its lifecycle. People have done the numbers, look it up.
orieJan 22, 2011
And a hybrid doesn't change that. Thus my point.
k00lravJan 22, 2011
also building the batteries for those cars arent the cleanest way possible either it leaves hell of carbon footprint too
zenpirateJan 21, 2011
Here's my issue. the battery *will* degrade in capacity, and it *will* fail. I keep my vehicles for much longer than 100k miles, and would not look forward to a $5000+ repair cost. They need to get battery replacement costs down.
orieJan 21, 2011
I agree, my current car has almost 300k. But we'll get there with battery technology. It's just a matter of time.
antialiasJan 21, 2011
I was reading just the other day that the first Prius' are around 10 years old now and that ones with over 150k miles on them still get around 85% of the original charge. That is with a hybrid which is constantly charging up the battery and draining it in small increments. A fully electric car should have even better battery life is it is doing fewer charges.
jhw539Jan 21, 2011
"A fully electric car should have even better battery life is it is doing fewer charges."
We wish. The Prius battery is babied - it never is charged over 70% or depleted more than about 30%. This is ideal for battery life since the majority of internal wear/damage occurs from deep discharges and full charging. It's not the number of charges that matters as much as the depth of the discharge, and EVs are likely to require much deeper discharges to get reasonable range. Now, if you run a 100 mile range EV in a mode where you never drive it more than 30 miles or charge it more than 70% (the trickier part), that battery pack will do great.

Hybrid cars are cool, I own one, 3 years already ))
kasha34Jan 22, 2011
Can anyone tell me how far a Prius goes just on the battery before it runs down?
