FTA: The Tasmanian devil is nearly identical to the wolverine in pop culture: We know that they're smallish mammals known for their viciousness and fury.
These are marsupials, not mammals.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
zombieroninNov 30, 2010
Marsupials are an infraclass of mammals, characterized by a distinctive pouch (called the marsupium), in which females carry their young through early infancy. Nowadays, most species occur in Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands, but there are also many species in the Americas.

It took me less than a minute to look up marsupials. Just pointing out that you looking like a fool could have been avoided.

I don't want to come across as a male honey-badger lover or anything, but did you see the size of that thing's balls? No wonder he's so fearless, 10% of his body is a testosterone factory.

http://i53.tinypic.com/1zcmp7o.jpg - Meerkat = Mongoose?
slywlfDec 2, 2010
You're right - the first picture is a meerkat - a distant and much smaller relative, and nowhere near as aggressive. The other is correct.

I once saw a docu. filmed in South Africa where a couple followed a honey badger for a ages documenting groth, habits etc. etc. Eventualy the badger finds a puffadder, thats caught a rat. The badger fights the puffadder and ends up getting bitten in the head(but not before killing the adder) Both the filmakers had become quite attached to the badger so they tearfully sat around waiting for the badger to end when eventually after a few hours the badger gave a few kicks, shook its head, got up, ate the rat, ate the puffadder and carried on on its merry way. Tuff as nails.
aronnycDec 1, 2010
Must be rare even for a honey badger to survive two hours prone and passed out in the wild.
remolaDec 1, 2010
Its quite possible the proximity of the Land Rover with the couple filming made sure nothing came close. + this is African savanah, while there are plenty predators they would have to find the prone badger and there arent really any predators that go chasing up a honey badger's scent because they know the ods of making a kill is slim. The same docu had the same badger attacked by a leopard that fought a good fight but eventually gave up and left the badger alone.
aronnycDec 1, 2010
Yeah, that's what I was thinking--that the documentary makers kept away predators just so they can portray the honey badger as even more bad-ass (coming back from the dead to resume its feasting).
Also true about not following a honey badger scent, though.

delphium226Dec 1, 2010
A mongoose will attack a snake becuase snakes will go into a mongoose burrow and to eat it's young. They don't attack 'for the f**k of it'.
