treehugger87Feb 10, 2012
At some point the efforts that conservatives make to ensure blacks and other minorities don't vote is going to fail. At that point, they will see themselves washed away from the political mainstream and just hanging on the fringe. The chickens will come home to roost.
davidnivenFeb 10, 2012
It ain't the GOP trying to keep blacks and other minorities in their place on the political plantation. Shhh...it's the Dems.
laurahoustonFeb 10, 2012
who the hell gave the kkk all those funds to change their name, a tv station and worldwide media exposure? over the past couple years who gave the JBS the facelift and money to sponsor the Republican convention? who let them set-up membership booths in republican events, and condones this new race hating PAC? who?
heathermgilbertFeb 10, 2012
Sorry, hon, but the KKK were DEMOCRATS.
apokalyps2547Feb 10, 2012
Yup. Conservative southern Democrats.
In the 1970s, however, the Democratic Party moved away from the conservative platform and embraced civil rights. Republicans moved in and picked up the segregationist southern conservative bloc.
GentlemanGhost542Feb 10, 2012

As was Rick Perry the princess of the Conservatives
treehugger87Feb 10, 2012
Sorry, tool, but the Democrats turned their backs on all of that when Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into law. What we all know that you don't seem to be willing to accept is that racism as a political force could have ended completely on that day if the Republicans, led by Lee A****er, didn't capitalize on it in order to get votes.
laurahoustonFeb 10, 2012
yes, kkk started by politican democrats to keep the first few elected blacks out of politics and terrorise people because of skin color.
emkaysmithFeb 10, 2012

And you know this because...
emkaysmithFeb 11, 2012
I know this because I have spent most of my life in the deep South, I've been involved in local politics since the 1960s, and I pay attention.
Or are you claiming the Klan is *not* White? Or that they're *not* conservative? Or that the GOP is somehow the "liberal" party?
The blindness of the right-wing ideologue to the real world is amazing.

He can't, because in his mind the parties never switched control of the South, where most racism dwells.
emkaysmithFeb 10, 2012
Speaking as a Southerner, that's not as true as it used to be. You can thank the increased income & educational levels among Blacks, . . . where it's been allowed to happen. I live in a gated subdivision (yes, with a golf course) that's about 50%-50% racially; nearly all the families here of both races are well-educated and include at least one "professional" in terms of employment. People are friendly with their neighbors of both races and the adolescents behave themselves and speak Standard English. Probably 3/4 of the kids go to good private schools and 90% are college-bound. Obama carried this precinct overwhelmingly, and that includes nearly all us white voters.
Racism dwells mostly in (a) non-urban, small-town areas, (b) areas with low educational values, (c) areas with low economic opportunities, and (d) communities that are especially heavy on evangelical fundamentalist Christians. Geography doesn't have a lot to do with it anymore.
isaac7719Feb 11, 2012
"Racism dwells mostly in (a) non-urban, small-town areas, (b) areas with low educational values, (c) areas with low economic opportunities, and (d) communities that are especially heavy on evangelical fundamentalist Christians."
Interesting, because all of these qualities are also associated with counties/states that vote predominantly Republican. However correlation does not equal causation, so I'm just speculating here...
gaia242Feb 11, 2012

and yes, patent leather boots correlates to prostitution but doesnt cause it... or does it?
emkaysmithFeb 11, 2012
"all of these qualities are also associated with counties/states that vote predominantly Republican"
Absolutely. I thought that went without saying, which is why I didn't bother to say it.
It's obvious to anyone who pays attention that there really are NO "red" or "blue" states. Louisiana and Texas, both of which I know well, and which are -- on the average -- overwhelmingly far-right politically, nevertheless have any number of educated, socially liberal enclaves. And places like Massachusetts and Oregon have their share of xenbophobic, mouth-breathing, evolution-denying social conservatives.
laurahoustonFeb 10, 2012
yes, and with public people like Romney allowing orgs like the JBS to sponsor republican events, with their silence of not telling hate groups they don't want their kind of 'help'...they embolden that cancer. We don't need those kind of political whimps running American society back to the dark ages.. We can do better!

Of course, that doesn't actually stop the idiots on digg from doing exactly that with Democrats. For example, someone in this thread is going to try to say that all the racists never left the Democratic party, when in fact both history and my own personal experience in the south tell me that 90% of modern racism is coming straight from the Republicans.
Granted, it seems to be mainly the southern Republicans, so if the Dems were to gain control of the south next voting cycle then it would be THEIR racism again, but it is not currently.
ganjadude4391Feb 10, 2012
I never said cherry picking facts was a good thing to do, in fact if you look at my posts from just the few previous days, ive been calling out the cherry picking and the ":your side does it too so its ok for me to do it" types.
I guess we just see different types of racism. When people think of racism they think of white on black only. They dont think about indian on black, or korean on chineese, or black on white, or hispanic on white or black.
everyone can be racist, The black panthers have black pride rally, no one bats a lash, mexicans and purto ricans fly their flag above the american flag at their house or even at some schools no problem.
When i see a korean store owner tell my black friend "hurry up and you buy - get out" that is racism.
but I highly doubt any of these people vote GOP. and I am not using this to try and say these few dems are racist therefore all the dems are racist, but it seems like the dems try and use any little shred of racism they see to paint with a broad brush and make the claim that all the gop is racist... not really fair when you think it through is it?Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Other than that, I agree with your post somewhat. Racism sucks, and it's ludicrous to make blanket statements about all of one party being racists.

It's the who?
" According to John Halpin, senior advisor on the staff of the Center for American Progress, 'Progressivism is an orientation towards politics. It's not a long-standing ideology like liberalism, but an historically-grounded concept... that accepts the world as dynamic.' Progressives see progressivism as an attitude towards the world of politics that is broader than conservatism vs. liberalism, and as an attempt to break free from what they consider to be a false and divisive dichotomy."
According to this, progressives seek to free us from divisiveness, but according to you, it is the opposite. Any idea why?
drmangrumFeb 10, 2012
They claim to bridge the divisiveness of liberal vs conservative, and they do. Progressives are really nothing more than the ultimate expression of Statism; the state is supreme and can do what they want.
However, "progressives" are extremely divisive in that they have a very "you're either with us or against us" mentality. Just look at the "progressives" in this thread. If you don't agree with their line of thinking (usually faulty), they heap on the attacks rife with logical fallacies.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Well, he's quoted in the wikipedia article on progressivism, saying the opposite of what you just said, so I was wondering if you had any insight as to why that might be.
atomheartmotherFeb 10, 2012
In terms of his reference to a "false and divisive dichotomy", it appears he's referring to the liberal vs conservative struggle; attributing (at least some of) the animus to labels rather than differences of opinion.
And that really has nothing to do with the divisiveness I'm talking about--that which is caused by pursuing multiculturalism rather than assimilation.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

That's misleading. Both parties voted with clear majority "Yeas" for the Civil Rights Act of 1964:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Rights_Act_of_1964#Vote_totals
Republicans had a higher percentage of Yea's, true, but in the 60's there were a lot of Southern Democrats who were against civil rights. After the passage of these Civil Rights acts, many of them turned to the Republican party because they opposed federally mandated civil rights and wanted states to decide.

The concept of a "collective YOU" on digg is your own delusional thinking. As soon as you lump (and there is NO reference to the collective in that "you") all into that term you discount your statement with a gross and uneducated generalization.
As far as individual "you" and each one of the "you" "forgiving the Dems", ONE has to come to terms with history and understand history before understanding the present. Unfortunately, you (and again, it is not a collective "you") have chosen to ignore a clear 50% of history in order to cherry pick those things that add to your hate.
